Clos de la Confrérie, a name inherited from the neighboring "Confrérie" or society, is a unique plot nestled in the heart of Santenay le Haut with a western exposure. The vines have reached their optimal age, allowing them to possess a high degree of concentration in our wines. The soil consists of small gravel and clay in the upper layer, giving way to more sandy soils when dug deeper. The vineyard was planted around 1985 and is 1.1 hectares in size, so as with all wines from Chateau de la Crée, supply is very limited.

Just like 2015, the 2018 vintage also brought a broad smile to the faces of winemakers and Burgundy wine lovers. The generous wines of this sunny vintage stand out. 2018 shares many similarities with 2015, with the understanding that yields were clearly lower (and prices have risen substantially since 2016). It was an average warm year in which, once flowering had taken place, there were no particular issues and very healthy fruit could be harvested. The Santenay Rouge Premier Cru Gravières underwent 18 months of aging in French oak barriques, 40% of which were new oak. In addition, the wine also underwent long bottle aging in the Château's beautiful cellars. As with all its wines, La Crée releases its wines considerably later than most Burgundy wineries.

The Santenay "Clos de la Conférie" will undoubtedly charm you with its deep ruby-red garnet colour. The intense nose displays aromas of blackcurrant and black pepper. The palate is refined with aromas of blackcurrant, silky tannins, and floral characteristics (notes of minerality). A very pleasant wine to savor, but gastronomically superb with robust, aromatic dishes, fiber-rich meats, marbled meats and brown sauces, rib steaks, braised lamb, and poultry – roasted or glazed.

FUN FACT: The wine is stored in our climate-controlled Wine Warehouse, and if you come to pick up the wine, you will also receive a nice discount. We are located almost next to the main road with ample parking. Click here for our address and contact information.

ABOUT SANTENAY

Santenay is situated exactly south of Chassagne Montrachet and is the southernmost village of Burgundy's famous "Côte d'Or" ("Golden Coast") region. The etymology of Santenay is most likely linked to the word "Sanctus," which refers to a sacred place before the Christian era. The appellation, with a total of 140 hectares of planted vines, consists of three areas: one next to Chassagne, one around the village, and one just south of the village. It is currently primarily a Pinot Noir appellation, but the Chardonnay reveals high potential there.

ABOUT CHATEAU DE LA CRÉE

The venerable Château de la Crée estate in Santenay, Burgundy, dates back to the 15th century, when it was owned by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to Philip the Good and founder of the Hospices de Beaune. Today, the Château’s vineyards comprise seven rare Premier Cru blocks situated entirely along the famous Côte d'Or slope, home to some of the world’s most legendary Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. Ken and Grace Evenstad, founders and owners of Domaine Serene Winery, completed the circle in their passion for great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay when they purchased the respected Burgundian wine estate Château de la Crée in April 2015.

The venerable Château de la Crée estate in Santenay, Burgundy, dates back to the 15th century, when it belonged to Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to Philip the Good and founder of the Hospices de Beaune. Today, the Château's vineyards encompass seven rare Premier Cru blocks located entirely along the famous Côte d'Or escarpment, home to some of the world's most legendary Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. The Château de la Crée estate consists of 25 hectares of prime vineyard blocks in Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay and Maranges and all plantations are located on Premier Cru sites. Biodynamic farming practices are employed in all vineyards to encourage optimal terroir expression and ensure soil and plant health.

Ken and Grace Evenstad, founders and owners of Domaine Serene Winery, came full circle in their passion for great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay when they bought the respected Burgundian wine estate Château de la Crée in April 2015.

Owning and farming legendary vineyards in Burgundy is a dream come true for us,” says Ken Evenstad. “We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make our own wines from famous vineyards like Morgeot in Chassagne-Montrachet, Clos des Angles in Volnay, and La Garenne in Puligny-Montrachet where world class wines have been made for centuries.

Since their first vintage in 1990, The Evenstads have produced world-class award-winning wines. Recently, the Domaine Serene 2010 Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir and the 2014 Evenstad Reserve Chardonnay were placed in the top 3 of Wines of the World by Wine Spectator Magazine. such high regard by the publication. In addition, Domaine Serene was awarded Best Pinot Noir in the World in 2016 for their Winery Hill Pinot Noir, winning Platinum Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards. Their continued commitment to quality and innovation has earned the Evenstads worldwide recognition as an iconic producer of world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They apply that knowledge and experience to take the wines from the Santenay region to a higher level.

Château de la Crée uses a collaborative approach to winemaking that spans decades of experience under the guidance of Domaine Serene founders, Grace and Ken Evenstad. Since 2017, our winemaker Pablo Bosch and the viticulture team have been working closely with the team at Evenstads and Domaine Serene to implement techniques in the vineyard and cellar to improve wine quality. The Château de la Crée team strives to continuously combine innovative winemaking techniques to highlight the best qualities of the legendary terroir found only in Burgundy. While great wines start with great vineyards, no detail is left unexplored during the winemaking process. There is no cutback in the continuous quest to make the highest quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the world.
