Château de Beaucastel is nestled in a magical setting dotted with vineyards, ancient olive trees, and truffle oaks. Beaucastel is Châteauneuf-du-Pape's most famous wine. Here, nature is found in its purest form, where its power is at its most at peace. The characteristic rolled pebbles are the secret of its vineyards, where gnarled vines grow in the traditional "gobelet" shape. On this ancient soil, we find the 13 grape varieties authorized in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. All 13 grape varieties form the basis of Château de Beaucastel's legendary blends, where they are grown biodynamically. This allows them to be one of the last to utilize the richness and complexity that this blend offers.
Beaucastel's history begins in the early 17th century. The Perrins family arrived in the early 20th century. Five generations later, we now have a global company specializing in quality wines, ranging from very affordable to the absolute top. All the vision, technique, and vineyard management that earned Beaucastel its coveted global top position are applied to the vineyards and wines from other appellations, such as Ventoux, Luberon, Cotes du Rhone, Gigondas, Vinsobres, Rasteau, and Vacqueyras. While retaining its own distinct character, the wines differ significantly and demonstrate the respectful approach.
The most famous 100% Roussanne wine is the white Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes from Château de Beaucastel. A beautiful wine with notes of lime, pear, orange peel, caramel, and honeysuckle on the palate, followed by a lively and very long finish with beautiful acidity. The nose reveals aromas of grapefruit, exotic fruit, jasmine, honey, hazelnut, and anise.

The 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Roussanne Vieilles Vignes is another triumphant vintage for this bottling. Fermented and matured in a combination of new and second-use oak, it's ripe and honeyed, with waves of lush peach and melon fruit, yet it somehow never seems overdone. Full-bodied, ripe and round, it's expansive in the mouth yet never heavy, finishing long and luxurious, with subtle hints of wood spice, honey and citrus.
On my last two visits to this large, historic property, I've been greeted by Cesar Perrin, who now manages all of the family's vineyards and supervises the winemaking at Château de Beaucastel. Other family members continue to be involved in the myriad wine-related business decisions, including participating in the annual blending process.
The big news is that the new, state-of-the-art winery facility is inching closer to completion. Built largely of rammed earth from the site, and designed to have a big portion of the cooling load handled by ambient winds evaporating stored rainwater, it will set new standards in sustainability (assuming it all works the way it is supposed to).
In the vineyards, experiments with various cover crop regimes rolled as mulch are taking place with a view toward slowing sugar accumulation in the grapes and reining in potential alcohol levels. The results are intriguing, with the 2021 samples I tried from barrel coming in 0.5% to 0.7% lower in finished alcohol and with slightly lower pHs compared to plots farmed more traditionally, yet they wines still exhibit dark fruit and supple tannins. "I don't want to change," explained Cesar, "but I'm afraid to have too much alcohol and too low acidity." Along similar lines, there's been a bit more use of open-top vats for fermentation, which can also bring down alcohol levels.
Overall, the 2021s here have turned out very well, with Cesar calling it, "a nice vintage, in quantity and quality."

Amazing nose of dried apricots and caramelized pears with a lot of toasted nut complexity. Very rich and mellow on the full-bodied palate, this glides over your palate. Opulent in the best sense, the creaminess very sensual, and then comes the amazingly graceful and properly dry, super-long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

From: Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2022: Bring It On (Jun 2024)
The dashing 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Roussanne Vieilles Vignes is yet another brilliant white from this reliable address. Discrete cedar, lemon peel, ripe pear, yellow apple and spring blossom are all pushed forward. Verbena tea and melon add more dimension. Hitting the palate with ample concentration and tension, the 2022 flawlessly makes its way to a sapid finish that lingers with an elegant aftertaste.
- By Nicolas Greinacher on June 2024
Château de Beaucastel remains a construction site. With François Perrin, we first sampled the whites from tank and barrel. For their Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, the Roussanne generally sees oak, old and new, while Grenache Blanc and Clairette are raised entirely in tank. Malolactic conversion is blocked for the latter two varieties to preserve freshness, but it is usually carried out on Roussanne. Looking at what’s in the glass, the bottled 2022 and the assembled 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc perform well. As for the Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, the 2022 turned out brilliantly, with the precise 2023 in hot pursuit. When Perrin offered to taste an older vintage, I opted for the 2009, as I still have one bottle in my cellar. Having enjoyed the solar 2009 a few times in its youth, I was curious to see how it developed. The mature 2009 has evolved into an alluringly complex yet remarkably refreshing Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, sitting at a perfect drinking spot. If you are lucky enough to own a bottle, now is the time to enjoy its full glory. Moving on to the reds, we started with the refined 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Hommage à Jacques Perrin before moving on to the 2022s. While it was no surprise to see the Hommage presenting as a contender for one of the wines of the vintage, I was thrilled by the quality of the traditional red Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its enticing floral lift and serious stature. Finally, we approached a bottle of the red 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. While the aromas and flavors have evolved towards lovely tertiary elements like tobacco and dried fruits, the robust tannins remain a focal point. That said, the 2005 is a distinctively savory Beaucastel with a few more years ahead.
