Domaine Chandon de Briailles
Domaine Chandon de Briailles has been one of the most respected producers of the Côte de Beaune for generations. From Savigny-lès-Beaune, the estate owns some of the finest plots in Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses, Aloxe-Corton, and Savigny-lès-Beaune. Under the leadership of François and Claude de Nicolay, the winery grew into one of the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy. The leading French wine guide , La Revue du Vin de France, ranks Domaine Chandon de Briailles among the absolute top of the Côte de Beaune and describes the estate as one of the region's references.
All vineyards are managed entirely biodynamically. The soil is worked exclusively with Comtoise horses to optimally preserve the soil structure. In the cellar, minimal intervention is chosen so that every wine reflects the origin and character of the terroir as purely as possible.

Corton Grand Cru Les Bressandes
This Grand Cru originates from four plots with a combined surface area of 1.45 hectares , spread from north to south within the prestigious Les Bressandes climat. Two plots are situated on former quarries in Aloxe-Corton with shallow calcareous soils, while the remaining plots towards Ladoix consist of deeper, iron-rich clay soils. It is precisely this combination of terroirs that creates an exceptional balance of elegance, power, and complexity.
The vineyards are situated in the middle of the Corton hill and benefit from the morning sun, without the influence of a valley. The soils consist of an ideal combination of limestone and ferrous clay, giving the wine its characteristic minerality, refinement, and structure.
The 2022 volume
2022 brought a warm and sunny growing season with healthy grapes of exceptional quality. Despite the dry conditions, the older vines remained perfectly balanced thanks to their deep-rooted root systems. The harvest took place between late August and early September and yielded Pinot Noir with fine concentration, ripe tannins, and striking freshness. The result is a Grand Cru that effortlessly combines power and elegance.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand and fermented as whole bunches. During vinification, no pumps are used, and no sulfites are added, except in exceptional years with hail or frost. Fermentation takes place in truncated conical oak vats, after which the wine ages for 15 to 18 months in Burgundian barriques. Approximately 85% of the wine ages in used barrels and only a small portion in new oak, ensuring that the terroir remains fully central.
Scent, taste and character
The nose opens slowly and becomes increasingly complex as the wine breathes. Aromas of black cherries, blueberries, and blackberries are refinedly complemented by iris, chanterelles, liquorice, violets, and subtle earthy notes. The fragrance is restrained, yet extraordinarily layered.
On the palate, this Corton Grand Cru immediately displays its class. The wine possesses impressive precision, with refined, silky tannins that perfectly complement the ripe dark fruit. The structure is elegant and harmonious, while the mineral tension lends the wine length and energy.
Neal Martin particularly praises the refined aromatic structure, the velvety tannins, and the remarkably pure finish. According to him, the wine gradually builds to a long, impressive aftertaste in which subtle notes of white pepper and minerality linger for a long time. It is precisely this combination of finesse, depth, and precision that, in his view, makes the 2022 a beautiful expression of Corton-Bressandes.
The finish is exceptionally long, mineral, and elegant, with dark fruit, floral notes, and refined spices remaining perfectly intertwined.
Storage potential
Although the wine begins to drink beautifully from around 2027, it possesses the aging potential characteristic of the great Grand Crus of Corton. For twenty years or longer, it will continue to develop and reveal additional complexity with aromas of truffle, forest floor, dried herbs, cedarwood, and fine spices.
Drinking window and food and wine pairings
Preferably serve the wine at 16°C and decant it for about one to one and a half hours when young.
Perfect with venison, roe deer, duck breast, pigeon, rack of lamb, veal entrecote, mushrooms, truffle dishes, poultry, and aged Burgundian cheeses such as Époisses or Comté.

The 2022 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fournaux is a blend of Village and Premier Cru parcels with the oldest vines planted in 1956 from a selection massale from Tollot-Beaut. It has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet with plenty of fruit: blueberry and wild strawberry, a touch of forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly-spiced entry, white pepper and clove infusing the dark berry fruit with a sweet, slightly candied finish. Delicious.

This estate has enjoyed a purple patch over the last decade. Once overlooked by cognoscenti, their take on classically styled Burgundy is now very much in vogue. François and Claude de Nicolay were just ahead of the game! “The only stress was in June during the storms that caused some oïdium pressure, especially with the whites,” Claude de Nicolay tells me. “We use skimmed milk to counter that instead of sulfur – it is preventative and curative. We have done this for ten years. We now use four horses to plow all vineyards and maintain grass between the vines and no longer use tractors. We use a caterpillar [Cheniette] that you have to steer from behind and weighs less than 400kg.”
“There was no mildew pressure in 2022. We find that the older vines react much better to the dry conditions than younger vines because their roots are much deeper and grafted onto the right rootstock [e.g., not 161-49, which is prone to degeneration]. It was a great vintage with similar picking dates to 2023, the whites end of August and reds in the first week of September. We picked early in the morning because of the heat and stopped at midday, though there were not really any dried berries [to eradicate]. Yields were similar to 2017, around 38hL/ha. We like to have a little bit of stock. There was no problem with the fermentation; everything is with 100% whole bunches, vinified in troconic wooden vats, apart from three cuvées in concrete. I like this because you don’t need to interfere with the wines and temperatures increase gradually and naturally, staying warm to maintain thermic balance. This enables a gentle fermentation [in 2021, they had to heat the vats a little as temperatures were cooler in October.] We do a half-carbonic pre-fermentation, an intra-cellular reaction that enhances aromatics and helps extract color and fruit. We are getting used to warm vintages now. Doing less plunging and gentle pumping over. We have to help the yeast get some oxygen. In 2022, the level of nitrogen in the soil was good enough to feed the yeast. Alcohol levels are between 13% and 14%, but no higher than that. There was no intervention until malo, though some barrels risked some VA, so we had to add some SO2 to those. The Premier Crus are raised in 10% new oak, and the Grand Cru, 20%. Most of the reds have just been racked, and they will be bottled in a month after time in stainless steel. We use nettle infusion, adding nitrogen to the lees.”
Tasting the wines directly after those of Domaine Bize, one can easily draw parallels, not least their strategy in the vineyard and use of 100% whole bunches. Perhaps the only significant difference is the modest use of new oak here. But what they do have in relation is a roster of wonderful 2022s that bolster the reputation of Savigny-lès-Beaune. It is too often overlooked, but you could argue it benefits from global warming. Whereas not so long ago, the vines struggled to achieve ripeness in cooler microclimates, nowadays, they may occupy the perfect spot in the Côte d’Or. Their Corton-Bressandes and Clos-du-Roi epitomize classical, transparent Pinot Noir imbued with complexity and poise. In Savigny, I admire their Aux Fournaux, although their over-achiever has to be a wonderful Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses.

De geschiedenis van Domaine Chandon de Briailles begint in 1834, toen de familie Chandon de Briailles het landgoed in Savigny-lès-Beaune verwierf. De wijngaarden liggen op kalkrijke bodems met een uitstekende drainage. Iedere climat wordt afzonderlijk bewerkt en gevinifieerd, zodat de verschillen tussen de verschillende terroirs maximaal tot uiting komen.
Pioniers in biodynamische wijnbouw
Domaine Chandon de Briailles behoort tot de pioniers van de biodynamische wijnbouw in de Bourgogne. Al eind jaren tachtig verbood Nadine de Nicolay het gebruik van synthetische bestrijdingsmiddelen. Toen François en Claude het domein overnamen, werd besloten de volledige wijngaard om te schakelen naar biodynamische wijnbouw. Sinds 2005 worden alle percelen biodynamisch bewerkt en in 2011 ontving het domein de officiële Demeter-certificering.
Het werk in de wijngaard gebeurt grotendeels met de hand. Op verschillende percelen vervangen werkpaarden de tractoren om bodemverdichting te voorkomen. Volgens de familie begint grote wijn met een levende bodem en gezonde wijnstokken, waarin biodiversiteit en respect voor de natuur centraal staan.
Minimale interventie in de kelder
Ook in de kelder blijft de werkwijze zo natuurlijk mogelijk. De druiven worden zorgvuldig geselecteerd en vergisten met hun eigen inheemse gisten. Afhankelijk van het oogstjaar wordt veel gebruikgemaakt van hele trossen, wat extra spanning, verfijning en aromatische complexiteit oplevert.
De rijping vindt plaats in voornamelijk gebruikte Bourgondische eikenhouten vaten, zodat het hout de wijn ondersteunt zonder het terroir te overheersen. Het gebruik van zwavel wordt tot een minimum beperkt en veel wijnen worden ongefilterd gebotteld. Het resultaat zijn uiterst pure Bourgognes waarin iedere wijngaard duidelijk herkenbaar blijft.

De Pinot Noirs van Domaine Chandon de Briailles kenmerken zich door elegantie, verfijning en een opvallende transparantie.
