Description
Ivory Coast...? More like the Gold Coast here in St. Joseph in the Northern Rhône as far as we are concerned. Especially for the Marsanne grape variety that does very well on the granite soil. Cave de Tain l'Hermitage does the rest. The Marsanne grapes are picked from selected vineyards with old vines and produce a wine that combines gold and green in its color. Wonderfully fresh and elegant with notes of lemon and grapefruit but also the typical fresh hazelnut and white flowers for the Marsanne. In the taste a combination of fullness with a tight edge due to the clear minerality. Also a roasted almond and therefore also a golden edge in the aftertaste. It is a white wine with a little fat, low acids but always that attractive minerality of the weathered granite soil that gives it that elegance and tightness.
Although the wine is great stand-alone at 10-12 degrees, it really becomes a feast of refinement with, for example, prawns 'à la plancha', or a sea bass with fennel. Top combination also with a goat cheese such as a Picodon or Rocamadour.
ABOUT CAVE DE TAIN
Without a doubt the top in the Hermitage and the Crozes Hermitage. In the Cave de Tain, around 370 farmers are united in a company with vision, passion for quality and a feel for the market. In the northern Rhône, they are leading with a share of more than 50% of the production. The vineyards are located on both the right bank, St.-Joseph, Cornas and St.-Peray, and on the left bank, Crozes Hermitage and Hermitage, of the Rhône and are located a maximum of 20 kilometers from the Cave. For many international winemakers, the wines produced here are the reference for their Syrah production. The crown jewels of the company are its own vineyards on the Hermitage mountain. The steep terraced vineyards with a granite soil bring out the best in the Syrah grape. International assessments between 90 and 100 points are "normal" for these wines. Cave de Tain owns no less than 25% of this unique piece of wine-growing area. Read more in the Tab: Winery

Scents of pencil shavings, crushed stone and ripe pears appear on the nose of the 2020 Saint Joseph Blanc Terre d’Ivoire. This rich, full-bodied 100% Marsanne should find a lot of fans, as it never seems overly weighty or fat, and it pulls itself together nicely with a burst of refreshing citrus on the long finish.

Saturated ruby. Lively dark scents are complicated by subtle spice, olive paste and floral accents. Seamless and broad on the palate, offering vibrant blackberry and cherry flavors that open up slowly with air. A sexy violet note comes up on the penetrating finish, which shows impressive tenacity and smooth, harmonious tannins. I find this wine to be pretty accessible already, as is the case with numerous wines from the vintage.

The wines from this quasi-co-op (I say “quasi” because all the wines are made from fruit crushed and fermented at the sprawling, highly modern Cave de Tain facility in Tain l’Hermitage) have never been better than they are today. No expense is spared, from a state-of-the-art optical grape sorter to highly specialized crushers and fermenters to aging foudres and barrels from France’s best tonneliers. Winemaking is overseen by the talented team of Xavier Frouin and Olivier Ciosi, and the range of offerings is vast, encompassing numerous bottlings from Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph (both red and white), Cornas and Saint-Péray. While the wines are usually quite polished, they’re by no means industrial or international in style. With few exceptions, alcohol levels are moderate and oak presence is understated. Wine lovers should be paying more attention to the work going on here.

On the left bank of the Rhône, between Lyon and Valence, the Hermitage hill dominates the Crozes-Hermitage appellation. From north to south, the vineyards of Saint-Joseph, Cornas and Saint-Péray spread out on terraces, on the right bank.
On their five cru vineyards, such as in Collines Rhodaniennes, the winegrowers of the Cave de Tain l'Hermitage offer an unparalleled variety of vineyard plantations, with access to all terroirs.
