the story of caiarossa
Caiarossa is located on the Tuscan coast in Riparbella, in the hills of the Val di Cecina. The estate was founded in the 1990s and acquired in 2004 by the Albada Jelgersma family, who also own Château Giscours and Château du Tertre in Bordeaux. Since then, Caiarossa has grown into an internationally recognized winery with a clear focus on biodynamic viticulture and respect for the natural environment. The name refers to the red, mineral-rich soils in which the vineyards are planted.
the terroir of the Tuscan coast
Caiarossa's vineyards are situated on slopes between 150 and 300 meters above sea level, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The soils consist largely of sandstone, clay, and limestone, which together contribute structure, freshness, and minerality to the wines. The mild maritime climate, with warm days and cool nights, contributes to the ripening of the grapes and gives the wines their characteristic balance of ripe fruit and refined elegance.
the grapes and the 2022 harvest
The 2022 Caiarossa is a blend of no fewer than seven grape varieties: 32% Cabernet Franc, 26% Syrah, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 7% Sangiovese, 5% Petit Verdot, and 1% Grenache. This combination reflects the diversity of the vineyards and produces a wine that is rich and complex, yet harmonious. The 2022 growing season experienced warm conditions, but thanks to the vineyards' lower slopes and the sandstone-rich terroir, freshness was preserved.
vinification and maturation
The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected. Fermentation took place in concrete vats using indigenous yeasts. The wine was then aged for 14 months in oak, 90% in French oak barriques and 10% in large 25-hectoliter vats. This approach gives the wine both structure and elegance, with the oak enhancing the aromatic complexity without overpowering the fruit.
color, smell and taste
The 2022 Caiarossa opens with deep aromas of espresso, menthol, dried herbs, mocha, and incense. Behind these, layers of ripe cherries and blackberries unfold, supported by subtle spice and a mineral undertone. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and layered, with a lush texture and excellent balance. Ripe tannins provide grip without harshness, while the finish remains long, refined, and slightly spicy. Antonio Galloni described the 2022 as a "deep, layered, and seductive glass of wine, with exceptional balance and the classic allure of the Tuscan coast."
reviews and storage potential
The 2022 Caiarossa received 94 points from Vinous. Galloni emphasized the purity, layering, and impressive potential of this vintage. The wine can be enjoyed young due to its open style, but also has excellent aging potential. The ideal drinking window is between 2027 and 2037, during which time the wine will deepen and develop additional complexity.

A spicy, dark but fancy wine with elegant aromas of cassis, black cherries, eucalyptus and oak bark. Full-bodied. Amazing polished, velvety tannins. The palate is very savory and spicy, with fruit and clove flavors. Balanced finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

Caiarossa
Toscana 2021 | $70
Dense and concentrated, this red is packed with black currant, blackberry and plum fruit, while iron, wild herb and oak spice notes add detail. Assertive tannins and vibrant acidity provide support, bringing a sense of equilibrium overall. There's fine depth to the dark fruit flavors, plus a terrific aftertaste that really persists. Shows power and grace. Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Grenache. Best from 2027 through 2045. 2,400 cases made, 800 cases imported.

I continue to be impressed with Caiarossa. These new releases show tremendous purity and vibrancy, along with plenty of the unique character that makes wines from this part of the Tuscan Coast so alluring. My impression is that the best is yet to come now that Caiarossa has turned an important corner in terms of quality.

The domain Caiarossa is located in a beautiful Tuscan village called Riparbella. The name Caiarossa is an ode to the soil. It consists of quartz and (pebble) stones, with an intense red (rosso) color. Caia comes from the Greek word Gaia, 'mother earth'. Caiarossa has been owned by the Albada Jelgersma family since 2004, which also includes Château Giscours and Château Du Tertre, both located in Margaux.
Caiarossa has about 40 hectares and is located on the west side of the hill, with the Mediterranean Sea on the other side. Various grape varieties have been planted here, such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. From the end of August to the end of November, people work hard to harvest the grapes, which is all done manually. After harvest, the grapes soak and ferment for about 4 weeks in concrete or wooden tanks. In order to get the best expression of the terroir in the wine, a spontaneous fermentation is chosen. Subsequently, a malolactic fermentation takes place and the wine continues to mature in the cellars. Caiarossa not only works biodynamically, but also according to the ancient Chinese art "Feng Shui". The shapes, colors, light and materials in the wine cellars are all adapted to this.
