The 2022 Antoine Jobard Pommard Epenots 1er Cru demonstrates that Antoine Jobard is making an increasingly serious name for himself outside of Meursault. This Premier Cru from Pommard combines the power and structure so typical of the appellation with striking aromatic expression and refinement. In 2022, this results in a wine that opens seductively with ripe red fruit and violets, yet reveals more grip, depth, and aging potential on the palate. This is Pommard with energy, character, and a clear future ahead.

Antoine Jobard and his move to red Burgundy

Antoine Jobard built his reputation with great white Burgundies from Meursault, but in recent years expanded his work into red Burgundy thanks to the lease of organically farmed vineyards at Domaine André Mussy in Pommard. This revealed a new side of the estate, in which the same attention to terroir, precision, and balance is central, but now translated to Pinot Noir.

Antoine Jobard's red wines are still in a relatively early stage of their development within the estate, but that is precisely what makes them interesting. They do not display the polished matter-of-factness of his white Meursaults, but rather a great deal of character, purity, and a clear ambition. Particularly in Pommard, Jobard shows that he is making serious strides with red wines as well.

Pommard Epenots: power and finesse in one vineyard

Les Epenots is one of the most famous Premier Cru vineyards in Pommard. The name is often associated with wines that possess more finesse and complexity than the firmest, most robust Pommards, yet still retain a distinct structure and depth. It is a terroir that combines tension with ripe red fruit, floral notes, and a long, powerful finish.

In the hands of Antoine Jobard, Epenots takes on a style in 2022 that is seductive and aromatic on the one hand, but remains true to the serious side of Pommard on the other. It is not a light-footed Pinot Noir, but a wine with grip, structure, and clear ambition.

The style of the 2022 volume

The 2022 vintage in Burgundy produced ripe and healthy grapes, with sufficient concentration but without loss of freshness among the best producers. For the red wines, this often meant great aromatic expression, ripe fruit, and round tannins, while the better terroirs still retained sufficient tension and definition.

At Antoine Jobard, this resulted in red wines with power on the palate, but without heaviness. The wine clearly shows the ripeness of the year, but retains enough energy and structure not to become broad or sluggish. This makes 2022 particularly suitable for a wine like Epenots, which benefits precisely from both ripeness and tension.

Scent, taste and character

The 2022 Pommard Epenots 1er Cru opens with an expressive and seductive nose of ripe red fruit, violets, and dark plums. This is followed by nuances of black pepper, fine spices, and a light earthy touch that immediately evoke Pommard.

On the palate, the wine reveals itself to be more serious and compact than the open, rich nose initially suggests. The fruit has a dark undertone of black plum and ripe cherries, while the structure is supported by fine yet present tannins that give the wine grip and length.

What makes this wine interesting is the contrast between aromatic charm and the more muscular, controlled style on the palate. The wine clearly possesses ripeness and suppleness, yet simultaneously reveals the robust side of Pommard. The spicy notes of black pepper and a subtle powdery mouthfeel give the wine extra tension and depth.

The finish is long and steady, with dark fruit, spices, and a firm yet refined grip that makes it clear this wine needs years to fully unfold.

A serious Pommard with aging potential.

While some Pommards can be particularly austere and closed in their youth, this 2022 offers an attractive aromatic profile early on. Yet, this is not a wine that relies entirely on early charm. The core of fruit, the spicy structure, and the firm grip in the finish make it clear that this is a wine that will provide great pleasure, especially in the medium and long term.

For Antoine Jobard, this is also an interesting step in his red portfolio. The wine still possesses something of the robust charm of an estate that is further refining its path in red, but it is precisely that which gives it personality.

This winery is one of the most stylish and consistent wineries to be found in Burgundy and the wines of this winery are usually paired with the best Meursalts. Other famous wineries such as Coche and Ravenau see Jobard as the ultimate example when it comes to meursault wines.

After working alongside his father for several years, Antoine has been officially in charge of this prestigious property since 2007. Although Francois has been able to enjoy his retirement for several years, he can still be found almost daily in the vineyards and cellar to assist his son. With the arrival of Antoine, the style of the wines has changed slightly. Some minor changes during winemaking have made them more accessible and refined, without sacrificing character. Antoine prefers to work with finer lie's than his father. He also bottles the wine in April / May of the second year following the harvest. These are only details, but the quality of the wines has increased further. Nothing has changed with regard to the work in the vineyards. The Jobards work long hours in the vine. Their 5 hectares are severely pruned and they only work with unproductive varieties to keep yields low. In the cellar, Jobard gives his wine time. After slow fermentation (Jobard's cellars are particularly cold), using only the natural yeast cultures, the wines are left to mature for a long time. The wines are bottled without filtering after about 18 months. Jobards wines are concentrated but not thick, the wood used is highly dosed and the wines have nice acidity and lots of minerality makes them great to rijpen.Alle wines from winery Jobard be in a vessel old and spend a long sur lie in the cellars from the winery in Meursault.
