The Le Mortelle estate is situated in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, just a few kilometers from the town of Castiglione della Pescaia, and holds an extraordinarily fascinating position, both in terms of the surrounding nature and the history of the terrain. The Antinori family has always been present in the area – a deed of ownership from 1863 lists Poggio Franco, one of the estate's finest vineyards, among their possessions, along with other plots of land. The Antinori have been working on the vineyards and the cellar since 1999 with the firm conviction that this area is destined to become an emerging region of Italian wine, as it holds great potential for the production of fine wine. The estate spans a total of approximately 675 acres, of which more than 425 are planted with vines, initially Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, followed by more recent additions of white grapes such as Viognier, Ansonica, and Vermentino, together with a small amount of Carménère. The soil, of medium texture, consists mainly of clay and silica and is quite rocky in certain parts.

Antinori's Poggio alle Nane is a blend of the finest Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a small percentage of Carménère grapes from the unique terroir of one of the estate's very best vineyards. Poggio alle Nane is a wine of great aromatic complexity with an elegant tannic structure.

The grapes, carefully selected and hand-picked into small crates, were subsequently further sorted on sorting tables and, after this second selection, destemmed and very lightly crushed. The must settled by gravity into conical stainless steel tanks where it then fermented. The skin contact period lasted 20 days at a temperature maintained at 28° Celsius. Malolactic fermentation, which took place in small oak barrels, was followed by an aging period of approximately 16 months in French oak barrels.

The Poggio alle Nane has a beautiful bright ruby red color. The nose is characterized by a complex and elegant bouquet. On the palate, vanilla and sweet bell pepper, wonderfully integrated with notes of berries, especially blackberries, and hints of Mediterranean herbs and lavender. On the palate, the wine is both structured and silky. The finish, balanced and persistent, offers notes of chocolate, blueberries, and licorice. As far as we are concerned, the Poggio alle Nane should not be missing from the collection of fine Italian wines, and we can already see the price rising every year, just as we have seen with Antinori's Tignanello.

More information about Antinori

Marquis Piero Antinori is in charge and is assisted by his three daughters: Albiera, Allegra and Alessia. Funny those three A's. We are not going to bother you with all the awards that have been received over the years, because then this price list can no longer go through the letterbox. There are two red wines that are available on allocation and that one would like to get a few bottles from all over the world and that are Tignanello and Solaia and we also have these in our range at Grandcruwijnen.

In 1180, Ugo and Antinori di Rinuccino were officially named as owners of Castello di Combiate; a century later, the family who had moved to Florence were included in the register of the silk trade cooperative. In 1385, Giovanni di Piero, an indirect descendant, entered the wine guild as an apprentice. Since then, the wine-growing tradition of the Antinori family has been continuous. With the establishment of the Marchesi Antinori winery, the peak was reached in 1895 and already in 1898 the winery was built in San Casciano Val di Pesa, which is still the center of the widely branched group of properties in all major cultivation areas of Tuscany, Umbria. , Piemonte (since the early 90s through the purchase of the wine cellar Prunotto), Apulia and even California. The traditional house participating in the modern Tuscan wine-growing revolution owes much of its prestige to its former chief vinologist Giacomo Tachis, who produced exceptional wines such as Sassicaia, Tignanello (especially sangiovese), Solaia (especially cabernet) and many others. the other was responsible. Vinologist Renzo Cotarella also created one of the best chardonnays in Italy in the Umbrian Castello della Sala.
