Description
The vineyards are located in Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena. Toro is certainly famous for the fact that it still has many ungrafted/original vines that have not been affected by the grape aphid (Pre-phylloxera). The sandy soils prevent the louse from digging tunnels and thus reaching the area. This is in contrast to more than 95% of all vineyards that were lost during that time, so we are still talking about ungrafted and therefore original authentic grapes (vines).
This is again a winner. 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo). The grapes are picked exclusively by hand and collected in small boxes to avoid damage. The yield is 15hl/ha. 15 months aging in French oak. Harvested exclusively from vines that are 45 years and older. Victorino is a very intensive, versatile, full-bodied Toro wine with a lot of body. Black fruit, cocoa, herbs, minerals and a long impressive aftertaste. Complex, concentrated, full, supple wine. Ripe black fruit, minerals, spices, roasted tones, ripe full tannins and an impressive aftertaste.
The EGUREN family sells its wine estate and with it NUMANTHIA and TERMANTHIA to Moët & Chandon. The EGUREN family has now started a new wine project in the DO Toro with TESO LA MONJA: Excellent plots in Zamora, Valdefinjas and Villabuena. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 650-800 m and have a mainly sandy soil. All plots are planted with "Tinta de Toro", a grape variety related to Tempranillo. The youngest sticks are already 15-60 years old and the oldest between 60-100 years. The EGUREN family has made a sensational start with this new wine project. This Victorino is a 1.5 liter magnum.

End of January 2023, The Wine Advocate
The 2020 Victorino has a little less alcohol than its siblings, 14.58%, and a little more freshness and acidity. It was produced with grapes from 35 hectares of old vines in La Jara and El Palo (Toro), El Rosal and El Risco en Villabuena del Puente and in Valdefinjas. It matured in new French oak barrels for 20 months. The toasted aromas from the barrels are still quite noticeable, but it's not overpowering and the oak gives the wine spiciness and creaminess. This is textured and balanced, with a mellow mouthfeel and abundant, slightly dusty and chalky tannins. This is reminiscent of the 2018, a year with abundant rains and larger bunches. Give it some more time in bottle to achieve a better integration of the oak and the polishing of the tannins. 44,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2022.
Teso la Monja is the project the Eguren family from Rioja created in Toro after they sold Numanthia to the LVMH group. They produce around 200,000 bottles from old and very old vines. I tasted the wines from 2020, a wet and cooler year with a warm end of the season, but in Toro, there was mildew more than in other regions, as they had rains close to the harvest and the grapes grew. The wines are lighter and a bit fresher with lower pH. They're fruit-driven, quite accessible young and quite direct, despite having a good structure and tannins, but all of it in good balance. They compared 2020 with vintages like 2010 and 2014, good years marked by rain in August that allowed the grapes to ripen fully. The vineyards and vines are certified organic, but they do not show the seal on the bottles.

Toro Victorino 2020 | $75
Full-bodied and muscular, this wraps sculpted tannins in a generous display of blackberry paste, fig cake, eucalyptus and medicinal herb notes. This red's fruit is ripe and juicy through the midpalate and finish, layered with balsamico acidity and a subtle, minerally underpinning of iron and smoke. Drink now through 2033. 3,000 cases made, 750 cases imported.

The 2021 Victorino, originating from Toro and aged for 20 months in oak barrels, displays a dark garnet color. Its balsamic nose offers notes of bay leaf, thyme, vanilla, blueberry and blackberry. Rich and bold, the relatively concentrated palate features an indulgent flow and fine-grained tannins. This Toro red is bold with a balanced mouthfeel.

Brothers Marcos and Miguel Eguren, originally from Rioja, control several wineries under the name Sierra Cantabria. In Toro, they built Numanthia, later sold it, and, in 2007, founded Teso La Monja in Valdefinjas. The spacious winery, designed like old Rioja casonas, houses a wide array of open tops. Marcos Eguren, leading winemaker, gently extracts Tinta de Toro. The Almirez and Victorino wines are fine examples, with Alabaster best defining the contained energy and polish achieved with this variety.

Opaque violet. Expressive aromas of cherry liqueur, blackberry, vanilla, baking spices and dark chocolate, plus a smoky mineral flourish that adds vivacity. Sweet, chewy and focused on the palate, offering intense black and blue fruit and licorice flavors and suggestions of candied violet, cola and mocha. Finishes with mounting tannins and strong persistence, leaving sappy blueberry and bitter chocolate notes behind. 100% new French oak.

Toro doesn’t get anywhere near the attention afforded to neighboring Ribera del Duero, but its top wines - and this bodega produces some of the very best - can be just as complex and equal in quality to Ribera’s most famous names. Established in 2007 by the Eguren family, of Rioja fame (Sierra Cantabria, etc.), Teso La Monja quickly earned a reputation for producing some of Toro’s most intense, deeply flavored wines, and the Egurens have never looked back. This is a no-expense-spared operation and the wines show it, from the entry level on up.

The Spanish winery Teso La Monja is located in the Toro. The winery heralds a new era for the Eguren family in DO Toro, a land from which she fell in love with the capacity of the old pre-phylloxera vines. Teso La Monja was founded in 2007. Wines that bring the potential of the Tinta de Toro with elegance, finesse and freshness, shared by all wines of the Eguren family attributes. The Almirez, Victorino and also the great Romanico (unprecedented good value for money in our opinion) are invariably 90+ Parker and Penin wines. Not surprising knowing that the Eguren family is also behind the Alabaster cult wine.
The Teso La Monja winery is located on north-facing loam soils with gravel on the surface, providing longer vegetative cycles for achieving balanced, powerful yet elegant wines that convey the maximum potential of soil minerality.
