Winery Sine Qua Non
Sine Qua Non is one of California's most talked-about cult producers. Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl, the estate quickly built an almost mythical status among lovers of powerful, distinctive New World wines. Production is limited, demand is high, and the style is instantly recognizable. Sine Qua Non works with a strong focus on small plots, extreme selection, and a very distinctive signature. The wines often change names and labels but always retain their intense character. You can find more information about this exceptional winery in the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
The 2021 Sine Qua Non Syrah Distenta III comes from California, where sun, light, and drought ensure grapes with great ripeness and concentration. For this wine, fruit was used from The Third Twin Vineyard, among others, supplemented with parts from Cumulus and Eleven Confessions. These are vineyards that play an important role within the Sine Qua Non universe and each lends its own accent to the blend.
The climate in this part of California allows for long and even ripening. This yields grapes with ripe skins, great flavor intensity, and high extract. In such an environment, it is not about lightness or restraint, but about texture, depth, and aromatic breadth. At the same time, differences between the vineyards add nuance to the final result. One component brings more dark fruit and power, while another provides tension, spiciness, or structure. Distenta III clearly demonstrates how terroir in this context speaks primarily through ripeness, concentration, and mouthfeel.
Grapes and vineyard management
Although Syrah clearly plays the leading role, this is not a wine that relies entirely on a single grape variety. In addition to Syrah, the blend contains 11.3% Grenache, 3.3% Mourvèdre, and 2.1% Petite Sirah, plus small amounts of Muscat and Petit Manseng. That is typical of Sine Qua Non. It is not about classic appellation rules, but about creating a wine with maximum intensity and complexity.
Syrah provides the heart of the wine: dark fruit, meaty notes, pepper, body, and structure. Grenache adds extra roundness and sweet fruit expression. Mourvèdre brings earthy depth and savory notes. Petite Sirah provides extra color, tannins, and firmness. The small proportions of Muscat and Petit Manseng add their own aromatic detail in the background, without throwing the wine off balance.
In the vineyard, for this type of wine, it is all about precise selection and harvesting at the right moment. Only fully ripe grapes yield the desired result here. Yields are generally low, which further enhances concentration. Vineyard management focuses on optimal phenolic ripeness, healthy bunches, and maximum flavor development. As a result, the wine acquires its dense structure and rich mouthfeel even before vinification begins.
Vinification and aging
The vinification of Sine Qua Non is aimed at extracting as much intensity, texture, and detail from the fruit as possible. For a wine like Distenta III, this means very precise processing of individual lots, followed by careful blending. Extraction is high, but not arbitrary. Everything is aimed at giving the wine its full, almost opulent character without it becoming completely heavy.
Aging plays a major role in this. New oak barrels are clearly present in the profile of this wine. You can taste this in the creamy, toasty, and smoky notes that run through the dark fruit and savory Syrah aromas. The wood not only adds flavor but also extra volume and texture. As a result, the wine feels broad, rich, and enveloping. Where relevant, sur lie aging also contributes to extra depth and a fuller mouthfeel, although here the interplay of fruit concentration, extract, and wood influence remains the defining factor of the style.
This is therefore not a sober or minimalist interpretation of Syrah. Distenta III is made to impress, with an emphasis on density, power, and a long, penetrating finish.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, dark color that immediately reveals its concentration. The aroma is pronounced and complex, with a distinct savory profile. Think of cured meat, barbecue, smoke, and peppery notes, complemented by rich aromas of new oak. Beneath this lies ripe dark fruit, compact and sweet in impression, but not jammy.
What makes this wine particularly interesting is the contrast between savoryness and luxury. The aroma opens with meat, smoke, and spices, but then develops a creamy and toasted layer that makes the wine fuller and broader. On the palate, it is powerful, full, and highly concentrated. The taste is massive without immediately becoming heavy. The wine fills the entire palate with sweet ripe fruit, spiciness, toast, and a distinct extraction that lingers for a long time.
The finish is long, dark, and sticky in the best way, with an almost staining intensity. Yet the wine continues to develop in the glass. As it gets more air, more detail is revealed, and it becomes clear that beneath all that richness there is also tension and layering.

Just over half of the 2021 Syrah Distenta III was sourced from The Third Twin Vineyard, with roughly equal parts Cumulus and Eleven Confessions making up the balance. It includes 11.3% Grenache, 3.3% Mourvèdre, 2.1% Petite Sirah and small portions of Muscat and Petit Manseng. The nose is meaty and savory, showing aromas of cured meats, pepperoncini and barbecue smoke aromas melded with rich, creamy, toasty new oak aromas. The palate is extraordinarily extracted and powerful, filled to the brim with sumptuously sweet concentration, which cascades into the decadent, staining finish. Despite the immense power and flashiness here, it leaves something to be discovered, continuously unfurling in the glass while remaining generally balanced. Integrating its alcohol more effortlessly than its Grenache-based counterparts, this is a highlight of the Sine Qua Non lineup.
The recent and upcoming releases from Sine Qua Non, Next of Kyn and The Third Twin will no doubt delight fans of these wines, and I wholeheartedly recommend devotees seek them out or purchase as much of their hard-won allocations as possible. That said, while the wines are exactingly made and generally impressive on a technical level, their larger-than-life scale and, at times, lofty alcohol levels limit the harmony and complexity they currently deliver or will ever attain. A few premises are essential to keep in focus while reviewing wines of this style so as not to allow sheer size and density to run away with the show: more does not necessarily equal better, and bold but simple flavors cannot match the dimension of many more nuanced ones. The originality of these wines is palpable throughout every aspect of the project, however, and readers who enjoy pyrotechnically impressive blockbuster wines will find them in spades.

From: Santa Barbara: California's Undiscovered Jewel (Aug 2024)
The 2021 Syrah Distenta III is another magnificent offering in this great vintage. A wine of penetrating depth and vibrancy, the 2021 explodes onto the palate with copious dark fruit, new leather, licorice and spice. It possesses statuesque energy and pedigree to burn. The Distenta III is one of my favorite recent SQN wines. The blend is 81.7% Syrah, 11.3% Grenache, 3.3% Mourvèdre, 2.1% Petite Sirah and 1.6% Muscat and Petit Manseng.

Elaine and Manfred Krankl presented a range of exceptional wines across their three projects, but that’s no surprise. What impresses me most is that after all these years, the Krankls retain a sense of childlike joy in their work that translates into a restless desire to experiment and try new things. Whether that manifests as planting new vineyards, refining farming and winemaking or approaching every wine each year with a blank slate, there is always something new to discover with each tasting, which is one of the reasons I find these wines so captivating. The Krankls were the first producers to believe in the potential of Rhône varieties in the Sta. Rita Hills; today, many estates have followed suit and continue to plant Grenache and Syrah. The Krankls’ newly completed winery in the heart of the appellation is impossible to miss. As for the wines? Well, they are truly spectacular. I prefer to drink them after a few years in bottle.
