Description
Sei Solo is the personal project of Javier Zaccagnini, former President of the Supervisory Board of the Ribera del Duero between 1992 and 1998. In 1999, together with Mariano Garcia, he founded the famous Aalto House, which is now considered one of the world's top houses.
Javier starts this new project in 2007. The Sei Solo is exclusively wines with grapes from Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) with vines that are between 60 and 90 years old. The old vineyard, exclusively 'tino fino' is located in the small village of La Horra, heart of the famous Ribera del Duero region. La Horra is known for its wealth of unique old vineyards, also e.g. Pingus, the exclusive cult wine of Peter Sisseck comes from there. Javier has been making top wine there for several years, but only wanted to release them under his private label 'Sei Solo' as soon as the wines meet his high standards. In recent years, the little fruit was sold to Aalto and went entirely into the top cuvée 'PS', because Javier was not yet satisfied. Now the time has finally come! 2011 is the first official release of Sei Solo with also a 'second wine' called Preludio. Javier Zaccagnini is not only a great wine lover, he is also very fond of classical music. His absolute favorite is Johann Sebastian Bach. As a tribute, he gives this exclusive wine the name 'Solo Sei', after the exceptional work of JS Bach. Sei Solo is a cycle of six violin works. It consists of three sonatas and three partitas. The label of Sei Solo is in the handwriting of his master JS Bach. Around 1,200 bottles of Sei Solo are made and a maximum of 4,000 bottles of Preludio
The grapes from which Sei Solo is made come from 6.33 hectares of old vineyards, ranging in age from 60 to 90 years, located in the town of La Horra. Integrated viticulture is practiced in these vineyards, always taking into account the natural environment
The harvest is done manually and in small capacity crates to prevent the grapes from breaking and losing their freshness during transport from the field to the winery. The grapes of Sei Solo are destemmed and then cold macerated. They are then transferred to stainless steel tanks of different capacities where they ferment separately. After alcoholic fermentation, Sei Solo is transferred to French oak barrels where malolactic fermentation takes place. Finally, before bottling, Sei Solo is aged for 18 months in 600-liter barrels.

Produced exclusively from the six hectares of vineyards from La Horra and matured in used 600-liter French oak barrels, the 2016 Sei Solo I tasted was the final blend in tank that they planned to bottle in about one month and release around the summer 2019. 2016 was a cooler vintage than 2015, and it shows in the wines. Furthermore, they harvested a little earlier, and the 2016 wines have half a degree less alcohol than those of 2015. They expect to fill some 2,000 bottles in July 2018.
Sei Solo is the solo project of ex-Ossian and now ex-Aalto Javier Zaccagnini, who is now focusing on these Ribera del Duero wines he started making as a hobby in 2007 (but only released from 2011 onward). This has now turned into his life project, and he has been joined by his son Michael who studied oenology and has been the official winemaker since 2015. They have moved their tanks and barrels from Aalto to rented space inside a winery in Pesquera, with the idea to build their own place in two or three years. The Zaccagninis are finally happy with their wines, and 2015 is the first vintage they submitted for tasting. They started with three hectares of vineyards in La Horra, and three more hectares rented there. They have continued renting vineyards and have some in the villages of Gumiel de Izán and Moradillo, a total of 15 hectares, and they plan to buy some more in the future. The idea is to make less powerful wines, combining power with finesse. Their annual output is around 25,000 bottles, but they plan to grow to 34,000 bottles in 2017. Production should increase with a further 12 hectares in La Horra in 2018. No known US importer yet.
