2021 Raen Winery Chardonnay Charles Ranch

The Fort Ross Seaview area was awarded AVA designation in 2012, making it one of the newest additions to the AVA catalog. Located about 80 miles northwest of San Francisco on the Sonoma coast, the vast area lies above the fog line while covering the rugged and remote areas of the Pacific coastline, extending inland from steep coastal ridges to northern Sonoma.

The AVA is blessed with a warm, sun-dried spot characterized by cooling Pacific influences. As such, the few vineyards and wineries have developed a Burgundy-influenced style of red and white wines. Specifically, the area is dedicated to growing fine but sharp Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their pure acidity, fine qualities and angular tannin profile found in their red wines distinguish their typical labels from the opulence found in nearby Russian River Valley labels. Producers have also developed a refinement for the production of a Syrah-based wine, made in the Northern Rhône style, reminiscent of the rugged topography and earthy character typical of American wines.

The Chardonnay grapes for the Raen Winery Chardonnay Charles Ranch come from a rocky, hilly slope located 2 miles from and 1,150 feet above the cold Pacific coastline of Fort Ross Seaview. Firmly rooted in well-drained, broken rock soils, these vines, planted more than forty years ago, are some of the oldest pre-phylloxera plantings of chardonnay along the Sonoma coastline. The well-drained soils on the hills are cool climate and exposure yield natural wines with concentration, minerality and depth. Delicate notes of white flowers, citrus blossom, nectarine and wet rocks on the nose. After some rolling, lychee and crushed shells remain hanging. In the mouth the wine is elegant, full bodied with fantastic freshness with a hint of lime blossom, minerality and saltiness and a very lively, elegant and long aftertaste.
