Description
Odyssée was first made in 2015 by Pierre Graffeuille (director of Château Léoville Las Cases until 2022 and now of Château Montrose) and his friend in the Rhône, Matthieu Dumarcher. What makes Odyssée unique is that it is a blend of grapes from Bordeaux and the Rhône, inspired by the practice of centuries ago where Syrah from the Rhône was added to Bordeaux for extra color. The initial attempt to blend Syrah with Bordeaux turned out not to be an ideal match. Grenache turned out to work much better. Every year, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache form the base, supplemented with other grapes. The blend of the 2021 is 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Grenache and 11% Mourvèdre.
The Bordeaux grapes come from the Médoc, north of Saint-Estèphe, close to the river, from vines that are 50-60 years old. The Rhône grapes come from a higher vineyard, some 30-40 kilometres north of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and are 60-70 years old. The wines are made individually in Bordeaux and the Rhône, and then blended in the Rhône. Odyssée is 100% organic and production is small (6,667 bottles).
On the nose the wine bursts out of the glass with notes of a whole host of exotic spice notes - such as cumin seed, star anise and cardamom. On a second layer and with some swirling come notes of dark ripe plums, warm cassis and blackberry preserves, with hints of dark chocolate, lavender and tapenade. The full palate is packed with concentrated black and blue fruit, framed by firm, round tannins and a lovely freshness, with a very long finish with a peppery kick. Very structured and with such impressive concentration this could easily cellar for 25 years or more.

Markus Del Monego gave 94/100 : “Dark purple colour with violet hue and almost black core. Fine nose with elegant fruit, hints of blackcurrants, plums and cherries, a discreet meaty hint in the background. Vanilla and fine toasting complementing the aromatic complexity. On the palate quite rich yet elegant with ripe tannins, well balanced with convincing length. A wonderful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Counoise with a promising future”.
