2021 Piekenierskloof Pinotage

Piekenierskloof has earned the affectionate nickname 'Grenache HQ' among wine enthusiasts. The region boasts one of the largest plantings of Grenache in the Cape, with an extensive collection of ancient, non-irrigated bushvine vineyards that have stood the test of time and consistently produce exceptional wines.

The winery's vibrant orange labels reflect the Dutch origins of the name Piekenierskloof and the history of citrus growing in the region. Each label also features a Piekenier, which symbolizes new beginnings, family heritage, bountiful harvests and the enjoyment of well-deserved peace and freedom.

The grapes are picked by hand and cold soaked for 24 hours. The fermentation is started with selected yeast strains and remains below 26°C. During fermentation the hat is immersed 4 times a day for maximum extraction. The wine then matures for 14 months in 30% new and 70% second filling and older French oak barrels of 225 liters.

This Pinotage is an excellent example of South Africa's native grape and shows an intense and vibrant dark red colour, typical of the variety. The nose is reminiscent of cassis, red fruit, dark chocolate and tobacco, followed by firm tannins, a clear richness in texture, full body and a long aftertaste.
