Outpost is a cult producer from Howell Mountain in Napa Valley, known for its powerful yet remarkably balanced mountain wines. The estate works with extremely steep vineyards and low yields, resulting in concentrated wines with a clear sense of origin. Since 2018, Outpost has been part of AXA Millésimes, maintaining its existing philosophy. Vinification is led by Thomas Rivers Brown, known for his precision and sense of balance.

Region, climate and location

The True Vineyard is located on Howell Mountain, one of Napa Valley's highest and most distinctive subregions. The vineyard was literally carved out of the rock with dynamite, resulting in poor soil and low yields. The mountain climate, with cooler nights and abundant sunshine, ensures ripeness while maintaining freshness and excitement.

Vineyards

True Vineyard is a small, isolated vineyard with a distinctive terroir. The vines produce very low yields and grapes with thick skins and high concentration. The location and soil structure produce wines with power, but also remarkable finesse and precision.

Grape varieties and composition

This wine is made from 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The focus is entirely on purity, structure, and the expression of the specific plot. No other grape varieties are used in this cuvée.

Harvest, vinification and maturation

The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected. Vinification focuses on maximum extraction while maintaining balance and texture. Maturation takes place in oak barrels, with the wood used carefully matched to the intensity of the fruit. Production is very limited, and only a small portion of the wine is made available for sale.

Color, smell and taste

The wine has a deep, almost opaque purple color. The aroma opens with exceptionally pure blue and black fruit, such as blueberry and blackberry, complemented by subtle notes of pine needles, cocoa, and spices. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intense, with a rich yet remarkably refined texture that feels creamy and velvety without being heavy. The palate is carried by concentrated dark fruit, notes of espresso, licorice, and menthol, and a fresh core that provides energy. The finish is very long, layered, and elegant, with a perfect balance between power and precision.

He emphasized its richness without heaviness and exceptional length. Both reviewers placed this wine among the very best in Napa Valley.
