Description
Stone Flat Vineyard, Sea Loam with Pebbly Soils. Located directly across from Durell Block, on the same sea loam with pebbly soils, but planted on a different rootstock. Stone Flat offers a leaner, more vinified appearance on the same site. The two wines side by side make for a thought-provoking comparison. It produces a wine that strikes an impeccable balance between its minerality, its green, orchard-fruity core, and its silky, lingering finish.
Kistler Vineyards is a small, family-owned winery in the Russian River Valley. They specialize in producing Burgundy-style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The winery was founded in 1978 by the Kistler family. They own some of the finest vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, including Dutton Ranch (Russian River Valley) in western Sonoma County. The winery was founded in 1978 by Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler. Kistler Vineyards has built a reputation for its dedication to crafting wines that express the unique terroir of each vineyard.
Kistler is best known for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, which consistently receive high ratings and critical acclaim. The winery produces a range of single-vineyard Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, often named after the vineyard where the grapes originate. Some of the well-known vineyards Kistler partners with include Dutton Ranch, Hudson Vineyard, and Cuvee Cathleen. Kistler follows a minimal-intervention winemaking philosophy, aiming to allow the natural qualities of the grapes and the vineyard to shine through. They utilize traditional winemaking techniques and often ferment their wines with indigenous yeasts. Kistler wines are produced in relatively small quantities, making them highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts. This limited production contributes to their exclusivity. In recent years, the winery has adopted biodynamic farming methods in some of its vineyards. This holistic approach to agriculture aims to improve the health and vitality of the vineyards and the grapes.

The 2021 Chardonnay Stone Flat Vineyard features alluring tones of spring honey, panna cotta, crushed almonds, jasmine and a core of white peach. The medium-bodied palate has a deeply concentrated core of peachy fruit balanced by a gentle chalkiness and refreshing bursts of tangy acidity. Powerful yet energetic, it has a long life ahead.

A very fine and polished chardonnay with focus, polished phenolics and a refined nature. It’s medium-bodied with beautiful fruit. Hints of salted caramel to the cooked apple and pineapple flavors. It’s poised and gorgeous and shows you what it has in a sophisticated way. Drink or hold.

From: Sonoma’s Sensational 2021s (Aug 2023)
The 2021 Chardonnay Stone Flat Vineyard is packed with the essence of tangerine oil, hazelnut, dried flowers, herbs and ripe apricot. Potent and layered, the Stone Flat is super-impressive right out of the gate. It's another wine with real density. All the elements are dialed up in 2021. Stone Flat is distinguished from Durell, which is adjacent, because of the use of 420A rootstock (versus 3309 at Durell). That, in the theory, results in a wine with lower pH and therefore higher acidity, but that is not the impression conveyed in tasting.

These new releases from Kistler are stellar. All the wines are wonderfully detailed and expressive of place, one of the signatures of this important vintage. Winemaker and President Jason Kesner describes 2021 as a year with an early budbreak and mild summer. Inclement weather during bloom reduced yields, although nothing as severe as 2020. The Chardonnays spent 11 months in barrel, followed by a few months in steel, while the Pinots saw 9 months in oak and were bottled ahead of the 2022 harvest. I also went back and tasted half of the 2020s. Those wines reflect the challenges of the year and reinforce just how special 2021 is. Readers will not want to miss the 2021s.
