Description
Juan Gil, family business founded in 1916 in the center of the city of Jumilla and is the champion of putting the Jumilia on the map as a (top) wine region and has led to several generations of winemakers standing up for the prestige/potential of the wines of the area and the qualities of the Monastrell grape. True to its origins, this winery has seamlessly merged tradition and technology with respect for the environment. Juan Gill is also the creator of the famous Clio and the world-famous El Nido.
The Juan Gil Blue Label (new name per vintage 2016). Previously the wine was called the Juan Gil 18 Meses and abroad the JUAN GIL ETIQUETA AZUL is a very scarce and beautiful wine. As the name suggests, the 18 meses has been aged for 18 months in French oak barrels and American oak. It is the top model from Juan Gil's Label series (Yellow, Silver and Blue). The grapes come from very old Monastrell grapes supplemented with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level with a very low yield. The wine is dark purple in color and has a beautiful nose of graphite, earthy notes, spices, black fruit and a hint of balsamic vinegar. The wine is full bodied with a nice creamy mouthfeel with a nice long aftertaste. The wine is ready to drink but will improve further in the coming years and has very good storage potential. The Juan Gil 18 Meses or the Blue Label is a very scarce wine with many international enthusiasts, so it is important to be quick. This version is a magnum of 1.5 liters.

September 2020 Week 2, The Wine Advocate
The 2017 Juan Gil (blue label) was formerly known as 18 Months, which is the amount of time it matured in barrel. It is a blend of 60% Monastrell, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah fermented in stainless steel and matured in new barrels for 18 months. This is the wine from the portfolio where they keep 100% new oak and use French grapes to give it more of a voluptuous, ripe (15.5% alcohol) and generously oaked, somehow international profile. Ashy and with liqueur-like notes and plenty of dusty tannins, it's for fans of ripe, heady and oaky reds. There's a sweet sensation in the finish, notes of chocolate, cocoa powder and espresso coffee. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2019.
The Gil Vera family have championed the style of powerful Monastrell in Jumilla since 2002, even if their roots in wine can be traced back three generations to 1916. They now own around 750 hectares of vineyards, mostly old-vine and dry-farmed Monastrell but also some Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Tempranillo and Moscatel. Most of the vineyards are worked organically, as they are certifying more and more of their vineyards and more and more of their wines. The environmental approach has also reached the winery, where they use 100% solar energy and all residuals are recycled; the whole operation is truly sustainable. They produce 2.7 million bottles per year, so it's not a small winery where these things are more or less easy to achieve.

Issue 242 End of April 2019, The Wine Advocate
The 2016 Juan Gil (blue label) is the wine formerly known as 18 Months, which is the amount of time it matured in barrel, and it has been identified for the past few years by the color of its label. It's a blend of 60% Monastrell, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah, and the Monastrell is from older vines than the other varieties. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in new barrels for 18 months. This is the one wine from the portfolio where they keep 100% oak and use French grapes, which is not the Juan Gil style—this has more of an international profile. This is very spicy and smoky, with plenty of toasty and roasted aromas. The palate reveals abundant tannins and oak-related flavors, a faint bitterness and a dry finish. This is for those who enjoy this profile of wine, not really my style. But within that profile, it's quite good. 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2018.
The Gil family from Jumilla have built a brand new winery that has 100% renewable energy, and all the waste is reused (water goes to humus, etc.). All of their vineyards are organically farmed even though they don't have a full certification in order to avoid bureaucracy. 2017 was a Mediterranean year in the style of 2015, and 2018 was cooler, more in the style of 2016, both very challenging harvests.

The beautiful bodega Juan Gil was founded in 1916 and has been owned by the Gil family for generations. Unlike the majority of Jumilla, the vineyards are located on the plateau between the mountains. As a result, Juan Gil benefits from a more temperate climate compared to the wineries located in the valley. The metamorphosis on Juan Gil's domain is truly spectacular. Where Juan Gil was always one of the leading wineries of the Jumilla region, today it marks itself more than ever as the top winery of the region. This is mainly due to the constant investments of owner Miguel Gil. His wines from the Jumilla region, which was synonymous with mass and basic, now rank among the very best in Spain. And what is beautiful, not only the top cuvées but any wine with the Gil signature is a pleasure. In addition to the well-known and famous wines of Juan Gil under the name El Nido and Clio, the family has beautiful domains including Pedrera, the 12 Meses (silver Label)| and the L'Altre de Can Blau. All in all, beautiful wines which are all organically grown and produced and have an excellent price/quality ratio
Miguel Gil also owns the top estate El Nido and out of respect and love for his region (and great wine!), is choosing quality over quantity in Jumilla, which had been undiscovered for years. For the mini-project of Bodegas El Nido, he calls on the Australian top winemaker Chris Ringland (at Parker perfect for 100/100…). At this small Bodega, 2 wines are made: Clio & El Nido. The 16 hectares of Monastrell vineyards, which are 60 years old, are situated on terraces that are oriented to the northeast. In addition, 25 years ago, 12 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon were planted in the same region on the north-facing hills. Today, these unique vineyards offer top-quality grapes that are magnificently refined by the Gil-Ringland duo into Spain's most aristocratic wines.
