Another fantastic and special Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) GG from Franz Keller. This Schlossberg Pinot Noir has beautiful and intense aromas of cherries, nuts, cloves and white pepper. Silky in texture, elegant. Fresh and firm with a slightly smoky taste, increased minerality and pleasant acidity & tannins with a long, powerful finish. Preferably let this wine age for a few more years - it will develop very well over the years. The wine has matured for 18 months in barrique barrels (35% new oak).

The wine comes from Keller's Schlossberg vineyard. The central part of this historically important vineyard - warm, sheltered, steep slopes - stores heat and creates a unique microclimate. Acquiring this plot was no easy undertaking for the winery! While walking through the vineyards, Fritz Keller saw the beginnings of a beautiful vineyard. Since the preservation of old vines and their genetics is very important to him, he found out who owned the vineyard so he could make an offer. Although the owners had no successor who wanted to cultivate these steep slopes, selling the vineyard to someone from Oberbergen was not an option for the owners from Achkarren. Their attitude was: "An Achkarrer does not sell to an Oberbergener!" Fortunately, Fritz Keller was able to prove that his mother came from Achkarren, so the owners eventually said yes. Thanks to this effort, Schlossberg Grosses Gewächs is still a special and unique plot with old vines. Since 2009, the winery has had its own, manually cultivated plot here. This vineyard is surrounded by a stone wall and is characterized by its black volcanic soil. The stone wall is up to 4 meters high, about 150 meters long and, with the right care, will last for generations. Lizards, snakes and fire salamanders find shelter in the stone wall, especially in winter. The Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir grown here are a replanting of old vines

All vineyards of the Franz Keller winery are located in the German region Kaiserstuhl, which is in the wine region Baden . Keller is a specialist in 'Burgundersorten', so the Pinots and Chardonnay. Especially the Spätburgunders (sometimes also called Pinot Noir by them because they work with clones from Burgundy) enjoy great international prestige. Last year Magda van der Rijst considered it her 'favorite producer of Spätburgunder from all of Germany', this year Lars Daniëls will once again put a wine from Keller on his shortlist during the Grosse Gewächse tasting in Wiesbaden.

The Kaiserstuhl is the warmest and sunniest wine region in Germany and is characterized by volcanic soils covered with fertile high loess deposits that offer excellent wine growing conditions for what they call in Germany the Burgunder varieties such as Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder. The Keller winery has truly beautifully situated vineyards, click here for an overview. At Keller they only use the best, carefully selected grapes from the best vineyards and plots: Schlossberg, Kirchberg, Eichberg, "Im Leh" and "Kähner". These wines mature in their best barrels and all have a unique character, potential and finesse - truly unique grand crus!

The wine goes very well with a nice dinner with for example filet mignon, (roasted) game meat, truffle or porcini risotto. Also nice with a cheese board.

Franz Keller - expressive, ambitious wines from the Kaiserstuhl

The Franz Keller winery is located near the border with France in the southern German town of Vogtsburg im Kaiserstuhl, part of the state of Baden-Württemberg. Franz Keller winery has several vineyards in the Kaiserstuhl, which is part of the wine region of Baden. The Kaiserstuhl is Germany's warmest and sunniest wine region and is characterized by volcanic soils covered with fertile high loess deposits that provide excellent wine growing conditions for what they call Burgundersorten in Germany such as Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder. The volcanic soils vary widely from vineyard to vineyard. This soil diversity contributes enormously to the exciting taste variation of the wines of this authentic winery.

The natural terraced environment is symbiotic with the winery, allowing gravity to be used during the wine production process. In addition, the unique architecture has been designed in such a way that wine production, cellar, tasting room and the restaurant KellerWirtschaft all fit under one roof. Fun fact about this roof: it is covered with native crops from Badberg, a nearby nature reserve. In this way, the natural conditions are enhanced by the building and its structure. Partly because the building has been dug into the ground, creating the optimal climatic conditions for wine maturation and storage.

Franz Keller - Schwarzer Adler is a gastronomic concept in Baden and actually in the rest of Germany. The company consists of a wine domain, wine import, wine trade, hotel and no less than 3 restaurants. Restaurant Schwarzer Adler has had a Michelin star continuously since 1969, making it the longest owner of all restaurants in Germany. The company is now owned by Fritz Keller, a man with boundless energy and lots of ideas.

His son Friedrich is mainly involved in wine making. The name Franz Keller stands for dry, refreshing, fruity but also complex and mineral-driven powerful wines. The wines are always of excellent, impeccable quality and are highly appreciated in Germany and far beyond, such as up to 94 points Parker and 5 stars Eichelmann. The winery considers it very important that the terroir, the origin and the character of the wine are reflected in the taste. The winemaking approach is inspired by the wines and the "savoir-vivre" of their French neighbors. The aim of this winery has been from the very beginning to make wines that are the perfect accompaniment to good food.
