Description
Winery Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is among the absolute world leaders in Burgundy and works exclusively with its own vineyards in the Côte de Nuits. The estate is known for its extremely low yields, meticulous working methods, and a style focused on terroir expression, balance, and a very long aging curve. La Tâche is a monopoly of the estate and is considered the most powerful and structured wine in the range, with a distinct ability to transcend challenging vintages.
More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
La Tâche is located in Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits. The vineyard covers approximately six hectares, making it considerably larger than Romanée-Conti, offering additional opportunities for selection in challenging years. The 2021 vintage was significantly impacted by heavy spring frosts and low yields. Despite these conditions, the estate managed to produce a wine with remarkable freshness, aromatic purity, and a style reminiscent of classic Burgundy, albeit with a modern precision.
Within the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti portfolio, La Tâche represents the most structured and broad-shouldered expression. In 2021, the wine is less exuberant than in warmer years, but rather distinctly refined, with a strong focus on tension, minerality, and length.
Vineyards and grape varieties
100% Pinot Noir from the monopoly vineyard La Tâche. Yields were extremely low in 2021, averaging around 8.6 hl/ha. Harvest took place between September 24th and 27th. The size of the vineyard allowed for very strict selection, which contributed to the high quality despite the difficult growing season. Total production was limited to approximately 579 cases.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
After a rigorous sorting process, the grapes were fermented entirely as whole bunches. Maturation took place in new oak barrels, with bottling in April 2023. The long, cool aging period resulted in full physiological ripeness without high alcohol levels. The low yields translate into concentration and texture, without the wine losing its finesse.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a bright ruby red color. Dark berries and plums emerge on the nose, followed by Asian spices, rose petals, and notes of forest floor and conifers. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate emphasizes the aromatic complexity and the distinct yet restrained influence of new oak.
On the palate, La Tâche 2021 is full and layered, with a broad, textured attack and a firm yet refined tannic structure. The acidity is perfectly integrated, creating tension and precision. Neal Martin of Vinous describes the wine as exceptionally harmonious, with a transparent structure, pronounced minerality, and a very long, energetic finish that shows more length than Richebourg from the same vintage.
Development and drinking window
Several drinking windows are suggested for this vintage. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate (97+ points) recommends a drinking window of 2031 to 2061. Neal Martin of Vinous (97 points) suggests a window of 2030 to 2060, while previous barrel reviews even point to a potential of up to 2055. While the wine is already remarkably harmonious, further bottle aging will be essential for it to fully develop.
Summary of professional reviews
William Kelley of The Wine Advocate awarded La Tâche 2021 97+ points, praising its combination of power, aromatic complexity, and structure. Neal Martin of Vinous awarded it 97 points, highlighting its exceptional harmony, transparency, and length, with a finish that clearly distinguishes itself within the vintage. These high scores confirm La Tâche 2021 as one of the most successful wines from a challenging Burgundy year.

The disparity between my score in barrel last year and from bottle this year is an illustration of the vagaries of barrel tasting, as the 2021 La Tâche Grand Cru has benefited immeasurably from a second winter of élevage. If the Saint-Vivant is the cousin of the Romanée-Conti, La Tâche this year is the big brother of the Richebourg, unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries and plums mingled with Asian spices, rose petals and coniferous forest and framed by a discreet patina of new oak. Full-bodied, layered and muscular, with a broad, textural attack and an ample core of fruit that conceals a serious chassis of tannin, it's long, resonant and intensely perfumed.
The 2021 vintage has turned out brilliantly at the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, delivering wines of striking perfume and sensuality. Sadly, there just isn't very much of them to go around. The April frosts destroyed around half the crop in Vosne-Romanée and even more in the Côte de Beaune, indeed, fully 90% in Chardonnay. Harvest began on September 23, lasting until October 2, with Echézéaux and Corton-Charlemagne the last to be brought in. In the winery, Alex Bernier and his team retained all the bunches intact without destemming after sorting, and the wines matured in new barrels until bottling between December and May of 2023. The late harvest brought full physiological maturity without high alcoholic degrees, and the low yields express themselves in mid-palate unctuosity rather than any of the stigmata that can sometimes distinguish frost vintages, especially in Chardonnay. In style, they evoke the classics of yesteryear, but the evocation is surely a little deceptive, as these 2021s are already so suave and structurally polished that it's hard to resist them today—so if this is classicism, in other words, it's a decidedly contemporary classicism. Above all, these are wines that beg the question, how do we define a great vintage? Is it when wines impress or when they seduce? The Domaine de la Romanée-Contis would certainly pass the latter test.

The 2021 La Tâche Grand Cru was cropped at just 8.6hL/ha between 24 and 27 September, bottled relatively later on April 12, 2023. This is very harmonious on the nose, with exquisite brambly red fruit, forest floor, subtle estuarine/oyster shell scents, and hints of orange pith. Wonderful mineralité comes through with aeration. The palate is built around a lattice of silky tannins, perfectly entwined acidity, very transparent with life-affirming tension on the finish. There is more length here compared with the Richebourg and definitely more sustain on the aftertaste. Irresistible, though this year, there are only 579 cases.

Predictably, the 2021 La Tâche Grand Cru threatens to nonchalantly walk away with wine of a (difficult) vintage with a showstopping display from barrel. There are some years when La Tâche does not mess about. Not playing the audience, no toying, just a direct, penetrating, kaleidoscopic bouquet that verges on ineffable to describe. Amazing transparency and delineation, if the aromatics were music, it would be a harp soloist plucking strings in an empty cavernous hall. Ebullient red fruit, a hint of wild and dampish moorland emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiselled tannins, heavenly balanced with tremendous length as it fans out without a care in the world. Breathtaking.

Bertrand de Villaine greets me at the hallowed gates to show me through the Domaine’s 2021s. Such is the insatiable demand for visits from around the world that they have to limit the numbers permitted to taste from cask, not least for the two practical reasons of 1) the time it takes and 2) that it is risky opening and closing bungs on barrels, exposing them to oxygen so frequently. Naturally, status precludes no one from the caprice of Mother Nature, and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s vines were exposed to the three days of frost from 6 to 8 April, plus the blanket of snow on 7 April. Despite distributing candles across their vineyard, that put pay to half the crop in Vosne-Romanée, 80% in Corton and 90% in their whites, Montrachet and now Corton-Charlemagne. There was little relief for the beleaguered vineyard team that, to quote the Domaine, “had difficulty keeping the pace imposed by the unusual weather conditions.” Mildew and particularly oïdium were aggressive from May, botrytis from July. Weather conditions became more clement, and the harvest took place from 23 September to 2 October, necessitating rigorous sorting. Yields are the lowest ever, averaging just 15hl/ha in Vosne-Romanée, higher in Romanée-Conti and Grands Echézeaux at 22-23hl/ha. That’s a bumper crop if you compare them to Corton and Corton-Charlemagne at a measly 4.5hl/ha, plus there are just four barrels of around 1,200 bottles of Montrachet.
As the 2021s will not be released for some months, I will refrain from analysing these barrel samples. But I like to include them to compare with their peers and to trace their development between now and after bottling. One thing that I will mention, that I opined to Bertrand de Villaine, is that I intuitively feel that this is La Tâche’s year rather than Romanée-Conti, for the banal reason that the former’s expansive six hectares of vineyard permit them to winnow out anything that doesn’t quite pass muster. In contrast, Romanée-Conti’s 1.8-hectares deny their team that same flexibility, arguably making it a more accurate translation of a growing season. It will be fascinating to compare them once they are in bottle.

From: Nature Rules/Nature’s Rules: DRC 2021 In Bottle (Feb 2024)

From: Servants of the Seasons: Burgundy 2021 (Jan 2023)

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (abbreviated DRC) is one of the most legendary wine estates in the world and is considered the pinnacle of Burgundian winemaking. The estate has a rich history that goes back hundreds of years and a deep connection with the traditions and terroirs of Burgundy.
Historical background of Romanée-Conti:
Early origins: The vineyards of Romanée-Conti have been cultivated since the Middle Ages. They were originally owned by monastic orders, who at that time managed many vineyards in Burgundy.
18th century: The Romanée vineyard (now Romanée-Conti) came into the hands of the Prince of Conti, Louis François de Bourbon, a nephew of Louis XV, in 1760. He added his name to the vineyard, which then became "La Romanée-Conti." The prince used the wine exclusively for his own court and guests, which contributed to its exclusive reputation.
French Revolution: During the French Revolution, the properties of the nobility, including Romanée-Conti, were confiscated. It was sold as national property.
Modern history: In 1869 the estate was purchased by the de Villaine family. Together with the Leroy family, they remain owners of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti to this day.
Domaine Romanée-Conti and its vineyards and terroirs:
Locations: DRC manages some of the most prestigious grand cru vineyards in Burgundy, including: Romanée-Conti (monopole)
- La Tâche (monopole)
- Richebourg
- Romanée-Saint-Vivant
- Grands Échézeaux
- Échézeaux
- Corton (since 2009)
- Montrachet (for the white wine)
Terroir:
The vineyards are located in Vosne-Romanée and feature a unique combination of limestone-rich soils, a mild climate, and an ideal location, resulting in wines of exceptional finesse and complexity.
Philosophy and viticulture of DRC
Hand harvest: Every grape is picked by hand to ensure quality.
Biodynamic viticulture: Since the 1980s, DRC has introduced biodynamic methods to preserve the natural balance of the vineyards.
Vinification: DRC combines traditional Burgundian techniques with modern innovations. The wines are aged in new oak barrels and mature for a long time before being released.
Why are the wines of Domaine Romanée-Conti so exclusive?
- Limited production: The total annual production of DRC is extremely low, making the wines rare and highly sought after.
- Quality over quantity: Every detail in production, from vineyard to bottle, is executed with the greatest care.
- Influence: DRC is the benchmark against which other Burgundian and even international wines are measured. The name is synonymous with luxury and perfection.
- Desirability: DRC wines are sold at auctions for record prices and are a must-have for collectors.
- Cultural icon: Over the centuries, DRC has become a symbol of elegance and refinement in the world of wine.
