Domaine de la Janasse Winery
Domaine de la Janasse is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's leading producers. The family-owned estate was founded in 1973 by Aimé Sabon and is now led by Christophe Sabon. The estate boasts vineyards spread across various terroirs within the appellation, with soils of galets roulés, sand, and clay. This variety of plots produces wines of both power and refinement. Domaine de la Janasse is known for its precise vinification and expressive interpretation of Grenache from Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
2021 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin
Cuvée Chaupin is one of Domaine de la Janasse's most renowned wines and is made from old Grenache vines grown on sandy soils in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. These plots yield Grenache with aromatic finesse and a remarkably elegant structure. The wine is known for its pure fruit expression and refined style, with less emphasis on power and more on balance and precision.
The 2021 vintage
2021 was a relatively cool and classic year in the southern Rhône. The wines therefore displayed greater freshness and aromatic precision than in warmer years. For Chaupin, this resulted in a style that is slightly less rich than in peak vintages, but exhibits added elegance and purity. Hail and frost also reduced yields, which benefited the fruit's concentration.
Color, smell and taste
Bright ruby red color. The nose offers refined aromas of cherries, raspberries, and red berries, complemented by floral notes of lavender and subtle Mediterranean herbs. As the wine opens, light spices and earthy nuances also emerge.
The palate is medium to full-bodied with a fresh and lively structure. The fruit is clear and pure with notes of red berry and cherry. The tannins are soft and well-integrated, while the fresh acidity provides balance and length. The finish is elegant, clean, and refined with a slightly spicy note.
Reviews and storage potential
This vintage received 92 points from The Wine Advocate. According to Joe Czerwinski, the wine may be slightly less rich than the best vintages, but it is exceptionally charming and enjoyable to drink. He praises the fresh style, the pure fruit, and the aromatic notes of cherry, raspberry, and lavender. The wine can be enjoyed now but will continue to develop until around 2033.

While the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin lacks some of the richness and depth of the top vintages, it's still a charming, fun wine to drink. Scents of lavender accent cherries and raspberries on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate remains bright, fresh and pristine from start to finish.
Christophe Sabon comes across as very even-keeled, with a philosophical outlook geared toward the vagaries of farming. In 2022, he explained, "The places that didn't get hail, benefited from the [August] rain." Volumes for some cuvées here were off by as much as one-third because of the hail, following a year in which late frosts were widespread, reducing production of some other cuvées. At my summer visit, hopes were high that 2023 would at last provide some volume to work with. Christophe's children are working toward taking on the mantle of the estate in the near future, with a daughter who has done vintages at Man O' War (in New Zealand) and Château Palmer and a son who was working at Miner Family (in Napa Valley).

A perfumed nose of cherries, red plums, cinnamon, nutmeg, dried leaves, roasted meat, black pepper, stones and dried flowers. Full-bodied with fine grained tannins. Ample and creamy with a caressing texture of red berries on the palate, with a touch of spices, bringing vibrancy throughout. Layered and succulent. Crisp towards the long finish. Drink or hold.

From: Châteauneuf-du-Pape New Releases: Welcome to the Pleasuredome (Jun 2023)
Aged for one year in a combination of foudre and demi-muids, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chaupin is made from Grenache that grows on sandy soils from a late-ripening terroir. Coming in at 15% alcohol, it showcases an alluring perfume of ripe red fruits along with hints of black cherry and plum, dried herbs, licorice and mint. Capturing purity and freshness outstandingly well, this full-bodied red seamlessly flows across the palate, ending with a resonating finish.
- By Nicolas Greinacher on April 2023
Domaine de la Janasse is located opposite Châteauneuf-du-Pape at the entrance to the village of Courthézon. Despite their proven ability to age, these wines are usually quite approachable in their youth, offering great value for money. Next to the 2021 releases, proprietor Isabelle Sabon opened wines from the 2020 and 2019 vintage, and I was pleased to see a homogenous quality level across all years. One of their promising side projects includes the wines of Domaine Saint Antonin, nowadays simply called Clos St Antonin, a Grenache-only Châteauneuf-du-Pape from old vines with an average age of 70 years.

Domaine de la Janasse dates from 1967 when it was founded by Aimé Sabon with 15 ha of vineyard. The total area now exists of 55 ha and is currently run by son Christophe and his sister Isabelle. He is a very successful winemaker! Christophe cultivates more than 15 hectares of vineyards in total. The variety of different grapes is very large, including Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Marsanne, Roussanne, Carignan, Bourboulenc, Counoise. All wines are made classically and excel through the combination of power and finesse. The vineyards are located on a difficult surface of pebble, sand and large boulders. The vines are 40 to 90 years old. The yield is usually less than 30 hl / ha due to strict pruning and a rigorous vendange verte. Christophe also works almost exclusively organically. Janasse's big break came in 2007, when their Châteauneuf du Pape "Veilles Vignes" scored 100 points Parker !! All their wines score excellent year after year. The quality of this domain is so great that even their "ordinary" Côtes-du-Rhône "is already highly regarded worldwide!
