Description
The Rene Barbier Clos mogador Manyetes carries the "Vi de Villa Gratallops" on the label, because it is from Carinena vineyards in the village of Gratallops. The vineyard is located at almost 400 meters and is only 10 hectares (of which only 3 hectares are vines) in the most inhospitable Priorat part. The Manyetes is a 100% Carignan which has been allowed to mature for 18 months in the best (new) European oak. The bright purple-colored Manyetes has a complex nose of wet slate, graphite and peat mixed with blueberry, violet and licorice aromas in a very harmonious way. The taste is wonderfully rustic, with polished tannins, good acidity, pure flavors and a very long finish. It is made from the classic Priorat grape, the Carignan, from a very old vineyard. This is the brother of the better known Clos Mogador, but this is mainly because only 1740 bottles were made (and of the 2020 only a few hundred bottles were bottled). but this brother of the Clos Mogador is so beautiful.
The different terroirs that exist within the Priorat wine appellation have led to the creation of a new "Village Wine - Gratallops". Just like in Burgundy, France and is a bit comparable to Antinori with its Super Tuscans. Manyetes is the name of a vineyard in Gratallops: a daring venture where vines can hardly survive given the region's poor soil and intense sunlight. The vines are literally surviving, but this is exactly what the main essence of Priorat wines is. Extremely low yields, a vine that has to root extremely deeply on the steeply sloping slate slopes and this extraordinary vineyard in an extraordinary environment produces extraordinary wines. The 2020 was extreme because there was less than a barrel of fruit, so in the end there were only a few hundred bottles bottled (only 20% of the already small production of 1,400 bottles in an average year). Connoisseurs know: low yield almost always means very high quality and this is no different with this Manyetes 2020. A collector's item and one for the basement.

An exceptionally different vintage. In the first week of the year, a heavy snowfall left a seasoning that lasted throughout the year with light rains every month. After a year of good rainfall that helped to maintain good reserves in the soil. The vegetation cover provided food and shelter for biodiversity, an ally in pest control. The high summer temperatures helped to keep vine diseases at bay. The vineyard arrived very full of vegetation, with 30% more grapes, allowing a good ripening that completely changed the concentration to which we were accustomed. The wines were able to achieve balance much more easily while maintaining good minerality and acidity, bringing freshness and elegance to all of them. The most abundant year in history. A vintage that reflects the weather more than the winemaker. René Barbier Meyer, Clos Mogador Winery Winemaker

The red 2021 Manyetes has less alcohol than any other vintage, 13.5% on the label. This is a wine from an extremely warm vineyard, where they harvested earlier (they picked over two passes) and managed to avoid the notes of over-ripeness by using crunchy grapes with lots of energy. This year, they did a big change to preserve the freshness while keeping the black slate character from Cariñena in Priorat, doing a softer vinification, with some 30% full clusters, which is increased in the following years. It has notes of blood, iron and soil and is balanced while keeping the personality. There is a note of freshness, reminiscent of tomato vine, that emerges with time in the glass. One-third of the wine matured in amphorae and the rest in an old foudre, so there's hardly any impact of the oak in the wine. In 2018, it was in barrique, then they moved to foudre, and in 2021, part was unoaked. A new Manyetes.
There is a new wine from Clos Mogador... a rosé! A village wine from Gratallops that complements another village red from La Figuera (Com Tu).

Graphite, ink and pencil lead with fresh blackberries and blueberries. A touch of mineral, too. Fresh and full-bodied on the palate with juicy fruit and firm and chalky tannins. A really fresh and well-poised carignan here. Gamey finish. 100% carinyena. Delicious now, but can hold.

From: From Revolution to Evolution: The Garnatxas and Cariñenas of Priorat & Montsant (Nov 2024)
There are some places in Priorat that can yield wines of exceptional flavor when bottled individually. This is the case with Paratge Manyetes in Gratallops, crafted by Clos Mogador as Manyetes. The 2021 Manyetes is 100% Cariñena, aged for up to 18 months in oak barrels, demijohns and stoneware jars. This purple-hued wine reveals enticing aromas of sour cherry and wild herbs, along with dusty, balsamic notes. Dry and chalky on the palate, it offers an intense, flavorful experience that lingers with a lean, vibrant and silky texture. This distinctive wine has a reductive character and a lasting, complex finish.

Founded by René Barbier in 1979, Clos Mogador is one of the five famous wineries that reinvented Priorat in the 1990s. René Barbier Jr. now runs the daily operations, overseeing both oenology and viticulture. Possessing an excellent understanding of the extreme conditions in Priorat, Barbier Jr. focuses on Garnatxa and Cariñena, aiming to bring out the purest possible expression of the region and working to revive long-suffering vineyards, such as Manyetas, Almendros and the stunning Espectacle. Barbier doesn’t like fruitiness, equating it to “the ketchup of wine, ” but he produces vivid expressions of the regional terroir, imbued with the subtle, painstakingly polished textures that are his true love. A far cry from the concentrated styles of yesteryear, these wines have the strange magic one finds in Priorat: weightless concentration, complex, ripe expressions, freshness and a free-flowing spirit. As Barbier Jr. says, “In Priorat, we make wines of character. If you want elegance, go to Burgundy.”

René Barbier is, together with Carles Pastrana of Clos de l 'Obac, Alvaro Palacios (from Rioja, but known by L'Ermita in Priorat) and José Lluis Perez (Clos Martinet, and father of Sarah Perez), one of the "founding fathers "of this recently discovered or rediscovered Priorat wine region. Clos Mogador is named after the single vineyard that René Barbier started cultivating in the 1970s, in the now world-famous village of Gratallops. Clos Mogador wines have become mythical wines, just like Sassicaia from Italy and Château Margaux from France. Clos Mogador has the cult status of great world wine. A special feature in wine making at René Barbier: he presses the grapes with an olive oil press, so that only half of the grape juice is obtained (in contrast to a normal press). As a result, the wine is even 50% more concentrated and looks almost likewise in the glass. Priorat wines are already naturally quite concentrated, and yields are usually already microscopic. Robert Parker was one of the first international journalists to give Clos Mogador wines extra critical acclaim.
The Clos Mogador vineyard is located at an altitude of about 800 meters in the form of an amphitheater with stone terraces. Biodiversity is the magic word here: in addition to grape plants, you will find fruit trees, olive trees and local native shrubs here. The grape plants, some of which are eighty to one hundred years old, grow on a slate base. Slate is a poor and hard soil that has the main property of generating a high acidity in the grapes. The location of the vineyard on slopes in a northeasterly direction to the sea ensures that the nights are very chilly. Because the temperature in the summer in that place is usually thirty degrees Celsius during the day, this means that there are large temperature differences. This ensures that dyes and tannins accumulate in large quantities in the grape skins and that is a sign of quality. The grapes are grown biodynamically, so with attention and respect for the plant and natural conditions, and all work on the land is carried out by hand.
In La figuera (Montsant) his vineyards of René Barbier lie against a mountain slope at an altitude of 400 meters approximately. Beautiful Garnacha come from in this area. This is where the famous Espectacle wine comes from. Nice and ripe with enough acids due to its height. He only picks the grapes when everyone has already harvested, which makes them nice and ripe and full. And its vines are 120 years old with low yields. In Falset his bodega is located on a modern local industrial area Celler laurona.
Grand Cruwines is the co-importer of the wines of Rene Barbier, such as the Clos Mogador, the Espectacle, Manyetes and the Nelin Blanco.
