Description
The Ao Yun Shangri-La (敖云云南香格里拉) is already China's most famous wine, produced in the foothills of the Himalayas (Shangri-La - Yunnan - China) by LVMH, under the leadership of Maxence Dulou, a winemaker originally from Bordeaux. It is known for: Cheval Blanc, Le Tour de Pin and Quinault L'Enclos. The Chinese winery Ao Yun in the Yunnan Province is considered one of China's top wines and demonstrates that great wines are being made in this relatively new wine country. The Ao Yun vineyards are located at the foot of the sacred Mount Meili at a dizzying altitude of 2,100-2,600 meters.
It all began with a dream. The dream to create a fine, world-class Bordeaux-style wine in China. Ao Yun is a dream come true, an incredible adventure that began in 2008 with a four-year quest through lands never before explored for viticulture. A quest for the perfect place to craft a great red wine. LVMH set its sights on an atypical terroir near the city of Shangri-La, in the foothills of the Himalayas in northern Yunnan Province. The vineyard, spread across four villages, is tended entirely by hand by local farmers trained in viticulture, while remaining faithful to the agro-ecological traditions of this land for hundreds of years. Situated at an altitude of between 2,200 and 2,600 meters above sea level, the estate is named after the magnificent clouds that gather above the permanently snow-capped mountain ranges: in Mandarin, "Ao Yun" means "flying above the clouds."
Ao Yun (敖云葡萄园) Shangri-La (敖云) is a subtle compromise between freshness and maturity, tension and density. Only half of the grapes harvested made it into the blend of the new vintage, reflecting an unparalleled level of precision since the first harvest in 2013. The 2022 Ao Yun is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon; 19% Cabernet Franc; 12% Merlot; 6% Syrah; 6% Petit Verdot; A wine handcrafted from the estate’s 314 plots of land, which are in turn divided into over 700 sub-plots. Very limited production, half of which is destined for the local market, making Ao Yun a rare wine. Complex aging without excessive oak, beginning with five months in pots for 50% of the production, followed by ten months in barrels, 30% of which are new. The wine is presented in its original packaging in elegant bamboo cases (OWC/1 and OWC/6). Fewer than 10,000 bottles of the 2021 vintage were distributed through Place du Bordeaux, and the 2021 vintage has once again received very high reviews. This edition is presented in a luxurious bamboo case (OWC/1).

The 2020 Ao Yun is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot, 6% Syrah and 6% Petit Verdot, with the fruit being sourced from Ao Yun’s four villages in order of rising altitude and percentage terms as follows: 10% from Xidang, 18% from Sinong, 38% from Shuori and 34% from Adong. The wine has a very deep purple appearance and sports a beautifully complex nose of lifted, perfumed dark fruit—cassis, bramble, black cherry, black plum, blueberry, mulberry—with herbaceous notes of mint, green bell pepper and sage, these primary elements marrying beautifully with some subtle, new oak notes of clove, toast, smoke and vanilla. Like the Village Cru red wines, this was matured for 12 months in 30% new, small-format French oak with 30% in older wood and the remainder in Yunnanese stoneware jars. On the palate, this is very full-bodied with super-ripe coating and fine-grained tannins with vibrant acidity—this comes naturally at 3.35 pH—and well-integrated 13.5% alcohol, providing the platform for the concentrated dark fruit and sweet and savory pyrazine and new oak notes. While this wine does not have the immediate "generosity" or sumptuousness of the 2019 vintage, it is undeniably elegant, polished and powerful in its own vintage expression. With its very long length, the 2020 Ao Yun has a complex, layered finish that is abundantly youthful. While it is approachable now, it will show better going forward and will comfortably age for at least 15 years.

James Suckling 98/100 : “Deep and concentrated but at the same time refined, fresh and complex, this Ao Yun cabernet combines power and concentration from the vintage and place with polished, demure aromas of dark currants, black olives, dark tobacco leaves, cigar box, paprika, dark spices, dark minerals and a touch of cocoa powder. Full-bodied and powerful, with masses of dusty tannins and a vertical yet ample finish. A warm, dry-vintage wine that’s powerful but beautifully balanced, polished and refined. 57% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 12% merlot 6% syrah and 6% petit verdot. 14% alcohol. It is a selection of grapes from four villages, Drink from 2027”.

From: Cellar Favorite: 2019 Ao Yun (Mar 2023)
The 2019 Ao Yun is seriously impressive. Bright, fresh and vibrant in the glass, the 2019 is a wine of energy more than size. Crushed red berry fruit, blood orange, mint, cinnamon, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco are all finely cut in this mid-weight, Cabernet Sauvignon-based red. In 2019 the blend is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 10% Syrah and 6% Petit Verdot from the villages of Shuori, Xidang, Adong and Sinong, aged in 35% new oak, 35% once-filled barrels and 30% stone jarres. It’s a fine effort from the team led by Technical Director Maxence Dulou, a Bordeaux native who spent time in Chile, South Africa and several prestigious Bordeaux châteaux (including Cheval Blanc, Le Tour de Pin and Quinault L’Enclos) before moving with his young family to China in 2013 to head this ambitious project for LVMH.

The Drink Business 97+/100 : “(Yunnan; 57% Cabernet Sauvignon; 19% Cabernet Franc; 12% Merlot; 6% Syrah; 6% Petit Verdot; sourced from a total of 31 hectares in 773 sub-parcels from 4 different village vineyards at different altitudes – 21% Xidang, 13% Sinong 26% Shuori and 40% Adong – with grapes sourced between 2100 and 2600 metres of altitude and hand-picked over 56 days; a final yield of 20 hl/ha with 51% of the harvest used in the grand vin; 100% per cent regenerative and organic viticulture; pH 3.44; 13.8% alcohol). A miraculous wine involving the most incredible human effort. The winery is at 2600 metres of altitude – almost three times higher than any other wine offered on la place. And, because of that, the wines from each plot need to be tasted at sea level before the final assemblage (to assess them at altitude is akin to doing so in an aeroplane)! The hottest vintage ever recorded here and one characterised by a very long period of drought in the first half of the year followed by much needed rainfall in the summer months, leading to some significant recalibration with more fruit from higher altitude making the selection. Wow! Super-intense and very much defined by the parfumier’s essences of flowers. They’re too intense to be natural in a way. Incense. Juniper. Clove. Crushed and concentrated essences of violet and rose. Turkish delight. Cedar. Black cherry and fruits of the forest. Super fresh and with lots of tension, the tannins incredibly svelte. I love this, but there is just the hint of residual sugar that prevents my note from being even higher. Fascinating”
