Description
Amarone is a true gem in the Zenato wine range. It is made from excellent Corvina, Rondinella, Oselta, and Croatina grapes, sourced from the Valpolicella Classico region encompassing the municipalities of Sant'Ambrogio, Negrar, Pedemonte, Fumane, San Pietro in Cariano, and Marano. Hand-harvested and selected, the grapes are then left to dry for three months, allowing much of the moisture to evaporate, resulting in a very high sugar content. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 30 months in oak barrels and then for another 12 months in bottle.
The Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Classico has a beautiful, yet typical, dark ruby-red Amarone color. The Amarone boasts impressive elegance with ripe fruit and an inviting bouquet. It's a deep ruby red with subtle hints of aromatic herbs. On the palate, the powerful, warm, and rich flavors, including wild cherries and chocolate, are impressive. Opening to dried fruit and savory spice, the Zenato 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico leaves no doubt that it was made with the appassimento process, which sees grapes turn into raisins before winemaking. The blend is 80% Corvina, 10% Rondinella and Oseleta and Croatina representing the last 10%. The wine is open-knit and slightly oxidative, and this suggests a near or medium-term drinking window. There is a soft dose of sweetness on the close. Production is 75,000 bottles.

Very complex nose of bay leaves, dried prunes and blackberry jam, enhanced with leather and a bit of restrained chocolate. Velvety tannins flow on the palate, with a full body, zesty and cleansing acidity and a savory finish of toasted black pepper and chocolate. Drinkable now, but best from 2029.

The 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico opens with an herbal thrust that gives way to dried violets, lavender and crushed blackberries. It is sleek and racy in feel with lifted textures and tart wild berry fruits offset by zesty acidity. It tapers off long and staining, lifted by a bump of residual acidity as notes of red plum leave a pleasantly tart sensation. I quite like the energy here and expect that the 2018 will enjoy a broad and open drinking window.

The Zenato winery is located in Sant'Ambrogio at their Costalunga estate within the Valpolicella Classica zone, where they sustainably tend to 35 hectares. Zenato uses natural air drying for the grapes, indigenous yeasts and their own design of oval-shaped Slavonian oak casks, from 300 to 750 liters, for refinement of their Amarone, Amarone Riserva and Ripasso. These are traditionally styled wines that aren’t shy yet remain amazingly balanced and refined. Residual sugar levels range from 4 to 6.5 grams per liter, with alcohols around 16.5 - 17% for the Amarones. All of that said, there’s an inner harmony that must be experienced to be believed, along with zesty acidity that makes it very easy to forget just how powerful they really are. This year's tasting included the 2013 Riserva, which I hadn’t tasted previously. It’s a spectacular interpretation of the vintage. Also, the 2015 Lugana Riserva is a wine that ranks at the top in its category. I also had a chance to revisit the 2018 Amarone and 2017 Riserva; both were stunning.

The 2018 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is exotic in the glass, with blood orange and mint nuances giving way to macerated cherries and clove. Supple and round upon entry, this impresses with its core of vibrant acidity and vividly ripe red fruits that create an interplay of sweet and sour on the palate. This tapers off with depth and concentration but is also unexpectedly fresh, leaving notes of plum and autumnal spice to linger on and on. This is a wildly successful effort for the vintage. My hat is off to Zernato.

Azienda Agricola Zenato is located in San Benedetto di Lugana, 25 kilometers west of Verona, the wine capital of Italy's largest wine region, Veneto. Sergio Zenato founded the wine company in 1960.
