Description
Thelema Mountain Vineyards is located on the southeastern side of the Simonsberg, with vineyards at an altitude of 530 meters above sea level. These are considered some of the highest elevations in Stellenbosch - the high altitude and soil profile are ideal for the production of premium wine grapes. Thelema believes that the quality of the grapes is the single most important factor in making a serious premium wine.
After manual picking, the chardonnay grapes are destemmed, crushed, pressed and settled in stainless steel tanks. The juice was fermented in French oak barrels of 228 liters with a wood aging of 10 months in French oak barrels, 35% new, and the rest in 3rd/4th fill. The Thelema Chardonnay is everything you could wish for: aromas of ripe peach, grapefruit with complex but integrated yeasty and toasted oak notes. The taste is medium body, with a beautiful long aftertaste.
"Thelema have been making good Cape Chardonnays for as long as I can remember, although the style has shifted a little over the years. This is wonderfully fresh and focused, with a dollop of cream from partial malolactic, wet stone intensity, subtle wood and understated concentration..." 94 points Tim Atkin Report 2022

The 2020 Chardonnay, at 13% alcohol, presents a slightly reductive character with notes of toasted oak, wafting with nutty and waxy nuances. The wine showcases flavors of yellow apples and toasted almonds intermingled with lemon and green apple undertones. Medium-bodied, it is fresh, succulent and vibrant with great acidity, and it has a long, textured, spicy finish. This Chardonnay was left on the lees for 10 months, all in French oak, of which 35% were new. A total of 20,000 bottles were produced. Don't let the screw cap scare you.
