From the brilliant winemaker Telmo Rodriguez, this Remelluri Blanco is a blend of Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Moscatell, Marsanne, Roussane, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier, aged for 14 months in French oak. Parker considers this outstanding wine a benchmark for white Riojas. A white wine for aging. Only a small quantity of Remelluri bottles is ever produced, and it is released by allocation.
Telmo believes that Remelluri Blanco is often drunk too young and always sets aside a portion of his wines to age quietly in the Remelluri cellars. With our allocation of the 2023 vintage bottle, we were also allocated some bottles from the 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022 vintages.
The 2020 Blanco is one of the best white wines from Remelluri. It is a powerful, characterful, and elegant wine, with ripeness and concentration combined with very good freshness. This unusual white wine was produced using a blend of grapes, attempting to blur the varietal profile; it fermented with indigenous yeasts in tanks and small oak barrels and aged in used barriques, foudres, and concrete. The wine has Mediterranean notes of hay and straw, yet is powerful and serious, more like an austere Hermitage with a super-chalky palate and a very tasty, almost salty finish. It possesses great finesse, with power and the freshness of the high-altitude vineyards and the cool year. Only 9,969 bottles were produced for this 2020 vintage.

The exceptional 2020 Blanco is from vines between 605 and 805 meters above sea level that were harvested over multiple passes after one episode of hail. This vintage had a slow fermentation, and it feels like a year of finesse and elegance. The wine has fluidity, elegance but also intensity, depth and very pure flavors, with a very saline finish, super tasty. This could very well be the finest vintage for the white... It's not a shy wine, with 14.2% alcohol and a low pH of 3.3, denoting very good freshness. 9,969 bottles were filled in June 2022 from almost 10 hectares of vineyards.
There is a big change in the range of Lindes, the wines produced with grapes from external local grape growers from the neighboring villages. They have bottled six different wines from 2020, selecting grapes from six different villages. In 2020, they had two episodes of hail and they had to sort, select and discard, and they also bought grapes from different growers, including Marqués de Legarda from Ábalos. It was a learning exercise to understand the character of each of the villages in a journey that continues in 2021 and 2022, trying to enhance the differences between the villages with a simpler enology.
There's also a Grandes Lindes, a very special bottling from a truly exceptional vineyard. It might be a collection that grows in the future if they find more exceptional vineyards. This project has been ongoing since 2011, but they never released any of the wines until today with a wine from San Vicente de la Sonsierra from 2019, but they still have all previous vintages, around 2,000 bottles each year, in their cellar.
As for the classical Remelluri wines, they are changing the concept; the new wines will come from the 2020 harvest, and they have reduced quantities tremendously. They probably did less than 200,000 kilos of grapes in 2020, when they had done 400,000 kilos in the past... So, I only tasted the white from 2020; the Yjar sold at La Place de Bordeaux in September 2023 and the classical reds will come in the future.

Flinty nose with effusive minerals, crushed stones and chalk. Salted lemons, fine lees and a hint of sour cream. Really bright and expressive, yet intense. Superb energy and length here. Long, mouthwatering finish. Goes on and on. Lots of purity, too. Drink now or hold.

From: The Many Riojas of Rioja: A Tale of Forking Paths (Apr 2024)
A profoundly nuanced white, the 2020 Blanco Remelluri is a blend of various white grapes planted in Labastida, Rioja Alavesa. It aged for 12 months in barrels, ranging in size from barriques to foudres. This yellowish wine reveals notes of pineapple and peach, complemented by hints of citrus and fennel that gracefully rise against a backdrop of wood. Dry and creamy, an oily mouthfeel wraps around the chalky, talcum-powder-like texture. This long-lasting, cleansing white exemplifies the unique perspective of a talented winemaker.
- By Joaquín Hidalgo on December 2023
Since medieval times, the Nuestra Señora de Remellouri property has been renowned for its vines and wines. Telmo Rodríguez's parents purchased the estate in the 1960s. After a career with Spanish wines beginning in the 1990s, Rodríguez, along with his partner, Pablo Eguzkiza, began the project in 2010. They recovered ancient plots while improving other vineyards, starting new plantings towards the mountain within the forest. The result is a series of wines that, with grapes from the 260-hectare estate and other neighboring villages, reflect the terroir and synthesize the flavors of the Sonsierra. The style is polished and detailed, carefully aged in an effort to emphasize the fruit within a delicate frame. When I visited, Rodríguez defined the three guiding principles of his work: "We are always outside the law," referring to the Consejo Regulador, as they bottle wines from multiple villages, "There is a talent in Rioja that goes beyond that law," referring to the ability to create and establish new territories, and "We want to reveal a country and its diverse terroir tastes." Hats off.

With Remelluri, Telmo Rodriguez is putting the Rioja on the map as a producer of original terroir wines. Long before the Rodriguez family settled on Remelluri, wine was already being made on the estate. As early as the 14th century, the monks here made wine from grapes from the surrounding vineyards. In 1967, the house came into the hands of Jaime Rodriguez, the father of pioneer and idiosyncratic winemaker Telmo Rodriguez. Jaime immediately makes radical changes. For example, he decided to only make wine from grapes from his own vineyards, which was exceptional in the Rioja at the time. We also strive to cultivate the vineyards as naturally as possible, in order to preserve the special character of the vineyards as much as possible. In 2010, the vineyards were officially certified organic under the leadership of Telmo.
In the early 1990s, Telmo joined the company. The story goes that his father wants to keep the production of the red wines for himself, so Telmo comes up with the beautiful white Remelluri Blanco. After several years of making wine in other parts of Spain, Telmo returned to Remelluri in 2010, where he took up winemaking together with his sister Amaya. As a great advocate of terroir wines, he has a clear opinion about the wines of the Rioja. Because winemakers often buy most of the grapes from grape growers, they have lost the connection with the vineyards and the terroir, he believes. In addition, the low prices of the grapes have caused winegrowers to neglect or even grub up the more challenging vineyards, often the older, high-altitude plots. With the wines of Remelluri, Telmo wants to show that the Rioja has many different terroirs that can be beautifully expressed in the wines.
