Description
Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri is the bodega from the Rioja. This bodega has vineyards in two villages; Labastida Alava and San Vicente de La Sonsierra from the Rioja Alta. Until 2009 the grapes from the two vineyards were used interchangeably but since 2009 they decided to separate these grapes and have two new wines called "Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida" and "Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de San Vicente"
These wines have their own personality but have in common that (rightly) very high ratings which is quite unique given the price-setting. These wines can compete with the often much more expensive wine from the Rioja. The Guia Penin, Parker and even our own WineLife are downright praising this new star from the Rioja.
The Lindes de Remelluri Labastida is a beautiful accessible red wine. Fresh fruit, a touch of mountain herbs, minerals, optimum acidity and a very pleasant finish. Silky on entry, then wrapped with juicy dark fruit complicated by flowers and a hint of blood orange. Powerful, yet supple, with seamless texture, fine-grained tannins and impressive energy on the finish. A new delicious way for Rioja. Great value.
Telmo Rodriguez has been involved with La Granja Remelluri again for a few years now. In 1968, Remelluri was purchased by Telmo's father. The property is beautifully situated at an altitude of about 600 metres, about 15 minutes east of Haro. In the early nineties, the young Telmo made a splash with the wines of Remelluri. A difference of opinion with father Rodriguez made Telmo decide to leave Remelluri at the time. Telmo has now returned and is working with his sister to restore Remelluri. The Reserva 2008 (the first harvest under Telmo's responsibility) was recently released and the result is impressive. The wines of Remelluri are more classic in style than Telmo's own property and are characterised by a great deal of elegance.
FACT: The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you come to pick up the wine you will also receive a nice discount. We are almost next to the Rijksweg with plenty of parking. Click here for address.

The Lindes collection comes alternately in Bordeaux and Burgundy bottles, depending on the amount of Garnacha in the wine, with a Burgundian bottle for the wines with more Garnacha. The new 2020 Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida is made with grapes from 11 grape growers in the village with different lieux-dits ranging from 440 to 710 meters above sea level, and the final blend was 89% Tempranillo, 6% Graciano and 5% Garnacha. The winemaking and aging were similar for all the wines to highlight the differences from the places, in this case, the character of Labastida, which is more floral and with more finesse than San Vicente, more serious, more delicate but not without clout. This has 14.12% alcohol. This is the largest cuvée with 77,264 bottles. It was bottled in April 2022.
There is a big change in the range of Lindes, the wines produced with grapes from external local grape growers from the neighboring villages. They have bottled six different wines from 2020, selecting grapes from six different villages. In 2020, they had two episodes of hail and they had to sort, select and discard, and they also bought grapes from different growers, including Marqués de Legarda from Ábalos. It was a learning exercise to understand the character of each of the villages in a journey that continues in 2021 and 2022, trying to enhance the differences between the villages with a simpler enology. There's also a Grandes Lindes, a very special bottling from a truly exceptional vineyard. It might be a collection that grows in the future if they find more exceptional vineyards. This project has been ongoing since 2011, but they never released any of the wines until today with a wine from San Vicente de la Sonsierra from 2019, but they still have all previous vintages, around 2,000 bottles each year, in their cellar. As for the classical Remelluri wines, they are changing the concept; the new wines will come from the 2020 harvest, and they have reduced quantities tremendously. They probably did less than 200,000 kilos of grapes in 2020, when they had done 400,000 kilos in the past... So, I only tasted the white from 2020; the Yjar sold at La Place de Bordeaux in September 2023 and the classical reds will come in the future.

With Remelluri, Telmo Rodriguez is putting the Rioja on the map as a producer of original terroir wines. Long before the Rodriguez family settled on Remelluri, wine was already being made on the estate. As early as the 14th century, the monks here made wine from grapes from the surrounding vineyards. In 1967, the house came into the hands of Jaime Rodriguez, the father of pioneer and idiosyncratic winemaker Telmo Rodriguez. Jaime immediately makes radical changes. For example, he decided to only make wine from grapes from his own vineyards, which was exceptional in the Rioja at the time. We also strive to cultivate the vineyards as naturally as possible, in order to preserve the special character of the vineyards as much as possible. In 2010, the vineyards were officially certified organic under the leadership of Telmo.
In the early 1990s, Telmo joined the company. The story goes that his father wants to keep the production of the red wines for himself, so Telmo comes up with the beautiful white Remelluri Blanco. After several years of making wine in other parts of Spain, Telmo returned to Remelluri in 2010, where he took up winemaking together with his sister Amaya. As a great advocate of terroir wines, he has a clear opinion about the wines of the Rioja. Because winemakers often buy most of the grapes from grape growers, they have lost the connection with the vineyards and the terroir, he believes. In addition, the low prices of the grapes have caused winegrowers to neglect or even grub up the more challenging vineyards, often the older, high-altitude plots. With the wines of Remelluri, Telmo wants to show that the Rioja has many different terroirs that can be beautifully expressed in the wines.
