The Pazo de Barrantes La Comtesse is a prime example of the Albariño grape's potential and demonstrates how beautifully an Albariño can age. La Comtesse is the older sibling of the very fine Pazo de Barrantes Albariño and is undoubtedly one of the very best Albariños. La Comtesse exhibits concentration, elegance, and balance, and the cool vintage gives the wine beautiful acidity that provides freshness and length. The grapes are very limited, coming from a small parcel, the 1.4-hectare Pago Cacheiro, the oldest (50 years old) and lowest-yielding vines on the Pazo de Barrantes estate.
La Comtesse from Pazo de Barrantes has been on the market since 2009. The owner of this estate is the renowned Marqués de Murrieta, and the owners have roots in Galicia, hence their desire to produce a top-quality wine and showcase the potential of the Albarino grape with extended aging on lees and in large oak barrels. Each vintage, they choose to extend the aging process.
All grapes come from Pago Cacheiro, a single 1.4-hectare vineyard planted in 1965, in the heart of the Pazo Barrantes estate, a 12-hectare estate in the Salnés Valley, the heart of the Rías Baixas region. The soil is sandy over granite bedrock. Harvest took place in 18 kg crates on September 22, 2018. After extensive selection, the grapes were destemmed and gently and slowly pressed in a pneumatic press. The must was decanted using flotation to ensure greater aromatic purity and then fermented at 10°C in 3,000-liter French oak barrels for approximately 60 days. The wine then spends 12 months in 3,000-liter French oak barrels, including 2 months on the lees and 12 months in concrete tanks. After bottling, the wine also undergoes extensive bottle aging. Only around 6,500 bottles of this now iconic Albariño were produced. This wine is only produced in the best vintages and receives unanimously high ratings from the international wine press.

In the glass, the Marqués de Murrieta La Comtesse de Pazo Barrantes is a beautiful, clear, light straw yellow. On the nose, we encounter lovely aromas of apple, peach, lime, and, of course, the pear characteristic of Albariño, but we also detect hints of oyster shell and lime. The latter becomes even more pronounced on the palate. The wine is full-bodied, slightly creamy, minerally with a good hint of briny sea air and a long, flavorful finish. This enjoyable wine is also a gourmet delight, begging for fresh oysters but also excellent with richer fish dishes such as cod with rosemary and honey, roasted chicken and vegetables, or a warm shrimp salad with honey mustard and green apples.

Marqués de Murrieta also has an estate in the Rías Baixas (Galicia) called Pazo de Barrantes. The 12-hectare Albariño vineyard is located in the Valle del Salnés. This vineyard, thanks to the natural influences of the landscape, contributes to the wine's aromatic complexity. Read more under the heading "Winery."

The 2020 La Comtesse was produced with the Albariño grapes from a 1.4-hectare plot called Cacheiro, where they have their oldest vines (from 1965) that deliver lower yields. This has a slightly darker color, denoting its age. The juice from the pressing of the destemmed grapes fermented for 60 days in 3,000-liter oak vats, where the wine matured for 12 months, the first three with the lees, and then it was kept in concrete for a further 18 months, which is more time in concrete than in previous years. The wine is complex and subtle, very elegant, with notes of aged Albariño, mixing citrus fruit with notes of bay leaf and hay but no trace of oak. It's powerful, long and balanced, with the classical salty twist in the finish. It's silky, elegant and serious, still undeveloped but with more complexity and depth than its younger sibling from 2022 that I tasted next to it. It comes in at 13.5% alcohol, with a pH of 3.08 and 7.7 grams of acidity. 9,972 bottles and 723 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2023. It will not be released until the end of 2025 or early 2026.
Pazo Barrantes, the winery in Rías Baixas from Marqués de Murrieta in Rioja, hopes to finish the transformation of the project with a new winery, but that will take time. For now, they sell their wines with more time in bottle than the average in the region, so both the 2022 from the estate wine and the 2020 for the special cuvée will be released in the second half of 2025. Total production is 110,000 bottles.

Exceptional, with one of the most distinctive aromatic profiles for an albarino. Herbal on the nose, showing green ginger, limes and passion fruit. The medium- to full-bodied palate is balanced with subtle ripeness and mind-blowing precision and harmony. From a vineyard planted in 1965 on sandy soils. Fermented and aged in 3,000-liter French oak vats, with 18 months in concrete tanks. Drink or hold. Only 9,972 bottles produced.

From: El Bierzo & Galicia: The Sil River Illuminates a Different Side of Spanish Wine (Sep 2025)
The 2020 Gran Vino de Guarda La Comtesse is from a vineyard planted in 1965. This fermented in wooden vats for 60 days, then aged for 12 months on lees, four additional months on lees in concrete and a total of 18 months in concrete tanks. The aging process sets the tone with elegance, delivering clean pastry notes, balsamic hints of eucalyptus, traces of honey, white flowers, acacia and a touch of orange. The oak is well integrated, later revealing a cedar nuance. Structured yet medium-bodied, this is long and refined, with oak adding complexity. Its compelling message is clear: Albariño can and should embrace aging to open the door to new stylistic horizons.
- By Joaquín Hidalgo on September 2025
Owned by Marqués de Murrieta, this estate is located in the Dalmau family’s ancestral pazo in Ribadumia, Salnés. Pazo de Barrantes redefined its Albariños in the mid-2010s, moving away from the fresh, simple style typical of the DO and focusing instead on wines aged for extended periods in foudres and concrete.

Pazo de Barrantes is located in the Salnés Valley (Pontevedra), where there are perfect conditions for the growth of Albariño grapes. This impressive Pazo (Galician country house) has been owned by the family of the Count of Creixell since 1511 and rises from the vineyards Pazo de Barrantes is located in the heart of the Rías Baixas and has 30 hectares surrounding historic Pazo. Pazo Barrantes is without doubt one of the flagship wines of the Rías Baixas DO. The Albariño grape grows in the Pazo de Barrantes' vineyard with the famous sea injection. This vineyard provides a lot of aromatic complexity to the wine, thanks to the natural influences on the landscape. The Pazo de Barrantes is the perfect 'sister winery' of Marqués de Murrieta. They complement each other perfectly, Marques is among the top of the Rioja and Pazo de Barrantes the top among the Albarinos. Both the Barrantes Albariño and the scarce La Comtesse are among the absolute top of the Spanish Albariños
