The Remondo winery Rioja Palacios is a family business linked to wine production for four generations. One of the most notable members of this family is Álvaro Palacios, who also makes wines in Priorat (L'Ermita, Finca Dofí, Les Terrasses) and El Bierzo (Corullón, La Faraona, Petalos). Now with Remondo they have a very modern Rioja house on the map.
The grapes for La Montesa come from three villages: Valtomelloso, Valfrio and Valviejo. The vineyards are located on the foothills of Mount Yerga with an eastern/southeastern exposure. They benefit from cooling due to their high location of 550 meters. The wine consists of a blend of 95% garnacha, supplemented with local grape varieties that are also planted in the vineyard (including bobal). All grapes are harvested at the same time. The grapes are first thoroughly selected, then they are destemmed and crushed and they go into the fermentation tank. The alcoholic fermentation takes place spontaneously in stainless steel tanks. The skins remain in contact with juice for about 35 days to extract color, flavor and tannin. The wine is then pressed and aged for 12 months in oak barrels. The wine is clarified, but not filtered. The result is a refined, floral Rioja. Lovers of Burgundy will certainly appreciate this too.
The Palacios Remondo la Montesa has a fresh ruby red color in the glass with notes of cherries, raspberries, orange peel, violets, nutmeg, cedar, earthy in the nose. This is a contemporary modern style Rioja, refined and fruity in taste. Supple in taste, well integrated tannin, aromatic length. Delicious Delicious with paella with chicken and chorizo, or just to drink on its own.

Álvaro Palacios, after successes in Priorat and Bierzo, returned to his native Rioja in 2000 and took over the management of the family business Palacios Remondo. He was concerned about the transformation of Rioja into a region with large volumes, excessive use of wood and little attention to terroir. Palacios sought change and advocated for a reorientation from Rioja Baja to Rioja Oriental, a name change that was implemented in 2018. This was accompanied by adjustments in maturation rules and geographical classification. Rioja Oriental is known as a warm area where bulk wines are often produced, mainly with garnacha due to its southern exposure. Despite this, Álvaro Palacios decided to completely replant the family vineyards, originally planted with tempranillo, with old garnacha vines. This was a considerable effort, but for Palacios it was the only right way to produce quality wine in this area.
