Description
At the helm of Bodegas Mauro is Mariano Garcia, in a former life an oenologist at the Spanish top estate Vega Sicilia and therefore certainly not just any winemaker. The Mauro VS (Vendimia Seleccionada) is a 100% Tempranillo wine that takes a giant step up in richness compared to the Mauro cuvee. It also shows remarkable freshness that characterizes Garcia, due to the considerable temperature variation between day and night. It shows an aroma of jammy black fruit in a lush, liqueur-like setting. It will easily evolve for another 6 to 8 years and will still be in good shape on its 20th birthday.
Mauro VS comes from two unique plots, located in Tudela de Duero and Traspinedo. They use organic farming with very low yields. The vineyards are over 80 years old. Mauro VS is only produced in the top years. After fermentation, the wine is aged for an average of 30 months in French and American oak barrels and then for another 6-12 months of bottle aging before the wine is available.
About Tudela de Duero
Tudela de Duero is an important wine region in the province of Valladolid, in the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. It is part of the Ribera del Duero region and is located on the banks of the Duero River, which plays a crucial role in the terroir of this area. The combination of a unique geographical location, rich soils and favorable climatic conditions has made Tudela de Duero a respected wine region.
The soils in Tudela de Duero are predominantly sandy and clayey, with a limestone subsoil. This contributes to the mineral expression and finesse of the wines. The area has a continental climate with large temperature differences between day and night. This promotes a slow ripening of the grapes, resulting in concentrated aromas and a natural acidity. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 700-900 meters above sea level, which adds an extra dimension of freshness to the wines.

The 2017 VS was cropped from a dry year marked by spring frosts that reduced the yield and resulted in their earliest harvest to date. However, the effect of the frost here was different, as they didn't suffer the big frost of the night of the 28th of April; the frost here was on the 1st of May and was not as severe (-2 degrees Celsius), so the grapes were from the first generation, not the second like in some places in Ribera del Duero. They picked the second week of September to preserve the freshness of the grapes and did a short maceration and soft vinification. It's a selection from two 70-year-old vineyards in the village of Traspinedo and Tudela, and it matured in French oak barrels for 26 months. If 2017 was an atypical year, this is atypical within that: the wine is lighter, more aromatic and open with lots of finesse and elegance. It's very approachable and one of the few VS bottlings that delivers instant gratification. A real triumph for the vintage. 43,292 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2020.
Mauro has 90 hectares of vineyards around the village of Tudela de Duero, Traspinedo and Santibáñez, outside the boundaries of the Ribera del Duero appellation. They work their vineyards organically, and they also apply biodynamics in some of them. 2018 is a spectacular vintage here, but I was also very pleasantly surprised by the 2017 VS. Current production averages 300,000 to 350,000 bottles.

The opulent and generous 2015 VS is the reserva style bottling from Mauro and is sourced from two Tinto Fino vineyards, one in Traspinedo planted 70 years ago and a younger one (15 years old) in Tudela de Duero. The grapes from two vineyards are fermented separately in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, and the wines matured in French and American barriques for some 26 months. It's powerful, concentrated, round and long within the more elegant style of this wine in the Mauro portfolio. 37,570 bottles were filled in March 2018.

Inky violet. Powerful black and blue fruit preserve, vanilla, candied licorice and espresso aromas are enlivened by building spice and smoky mineral notes. Youthfully chewy, palate-staining blackberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors show impressive depth and turn sweeter through the back half. At once rich and energetic, with youthfully gripping tannins adding shape to a very long, spice-accented finish that leaves dark berry and violet pastille notes behind.

After spending 30 years as winemaker at Vega Sicilia, Mariano GarcÃa established his own bodega and vineyards in Tudela de Duero, just outside the western limitation of the Ribera del Duero DO, in 1978. Mauro quickly emerged as one of Spain’s finest wineries, producing wines that did then and still do compete with the best that Ribera del Duero has to offer. Up to three wines are produced here, depending on the vintage, and they are consistently concentrated, full-flavored, polished and age-worthy, from top to bottom. GarcÃa’s sons, Eduardo and Alberto, are in charge now, and the quality of the wines has actually been rising steadily over the last decade and a half, with current vintages representing the best work yet done here. Mauro is definitely among the country’s foremost bodegas.

Bodegas Mauro was founded in 1978 by Mariano GarcÃa, former winemaker from Vega Sicilia. His sons Alberto and Eduardo also work in the company, while cousin Isaac Fernández is the oenologist. The vineyards, in total 60 ha, are located just outside (west) the DO Ribera del Duero. The vineyards are mainly planted with Tempranillo and Syrah. On the spot, a continental climate with an Atlantic influence prevails with no more than 425 liters per m2 of rainfall per year.
The soil contains a lot of lime and is very porous. The vines are 20 years old, in the Cueva Baja vineyard of 3 hectares almost 100 years. Annually, some 210,000 bottles come from the beautiful cellars, which indicates a low average yield per hectare, namely 35 hl. Mauro has 950 225 liter barriques of mainly French oak, 25% of American oak. 20% is renewed annually. Mauro's reputation is enormous, the wines belong to the international top. In 2004 a new Bodega was built just outside the busy town of Tudela de Duero to further increase quality and improve the accessibility of the company.
The winery produces lush, elegant and balanced wines: Mauro, the Mauro VS, the Mauro Terreus and the Mauro Godello. In addition, they also produce the San Roman and the very popular vaue for money wine: the Prima
Since 2004, Eduardo Garcia, son of the legendary winemaker Mariano Garcia, has been in charge. Eduardo is a young talent of Spanish viticulture with an impressive background and reputation in the wine world. His background includes master degrees in viticulture and oenology at the most prestigious schools in Bordeaux and Spain, along with his already great hands-on experience in the vineyards of Bordeaux, Burgundy and California.
