Description
The Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru "Les Petits Monts" from Maison Joseph Drouhin is a refined Pinot Noir from the prestigious "Les Petits Monts" vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, located in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. This Premier Cru vineyard is located at an altitude, just above the famous Romanée-Conti parcel, and is known for producing wines of exceptional elegance and complexity.
The Vosne-Romanée Petits Monts has an intense deep ruby red colour. The bouquet reveals characteristic aromas of wild cherry, combined with fine spices and a subtle musk note. In the mouth, the wine offers a silky first impression, with refined tannins of great class and lively notes. The finish is long and offers a range of sensations.
Les Petits Monts" is a Premier Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée, located on the higher slopes of the Côte d'Or, approximately 330 metres above sea level. The vineyard lies just above the Grand Cru Richebourg and covers just over 3.6 hectares. The eastern exposure and the chalky, stony soil contribute to the unique expression of the terroir in the wine.
This elegant wine goes well with refined dishes such as roasted duck, rack of lamb or game dishes. Serve at a temperature of 16°C to allow the aromas and flavours to fully develop. The Vosne-Romanée "Les Petits Monts" has an excellent ageing potential. Depending on the storage conditions, this wine can be aged for 10 to 20 years or more, gaining complexity and depth with age.

This is very beautiful, but it’s not at all loud, rather it is quiet and delicate and slowly creeps up on you. Then, suddenly, the backbone of a mighty creature begins to emerge from the deep. Super fine tannins and wonderful mineral freshness at the very precise finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.

From: La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy - Côte de Beaune (Dec 2020)
The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru, which until now I did not realize is owned by Véronique Drouhin-Boss personally, includes 40% whole cluster. It has a wonderful bouquet of violet-infused red plum and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Full of tension and energy with good grip toward the sensual finish. Excellent.

Joseph Drouhin was a bold and enterprising young man who hailed from the Chablis region. In 1880, at the age of 22, he settled in Beaune and founded his own wine company there. His goal was to offer high quality wines that would bear his name. His son Maurice succeeded him and set up a vineyard estate in front of the house, buying land in some excellent appellations such as Clos des Mouches and Clos de Vougeot. Robert Drouhin, who succeeded Maurice in 1957, gave the domain its current dimension and acquired many vineyards, especially in Chablis, where he was able to recognize its true potential. He was one of the first in Burgundy to introduce "culture raisonnée" (abolition of pesticides and other chemicals) and set up an oenology laboratory led by Laurence Jobard, the very first female oenologist in Burgundy. Philippe, Véronique, Laurent and Frédéric are the four children of Robert and Françoise Drouhin. They uphold the values of the house and its constant search for quality, for the enjoyment of all who have a deep appreciation for the natural elegance of Burgundy.
With nearly 90 different appellations, Joseph Drouhin offers a fascinating range of Burgundian terroirs in all their authenticity and subtle variations. Joseph Drouhin has adopted the organic and biodynamic approach. Only natural products are used in the vineyards and all procedures show the utmost respect for the soil, the vine and the environment. Joseph Drouhin's style is an alliance between character, balance and harmony. Wines intended to be drunk young are fresh and subtle; wines that are meant to be preserved take on a luscious complexity with age.
