2020 Finca Villacreces Pruno

Unbelievable- what a wine for this price. This Pruno from Finca Villacreces is still young but still has a lot of potential for the coming years. Time and time again, this beautiful wine scores very high with the international wine press and Finca Villacreces has proven to be able to produce consistent quality year-in-year-out. Parker comments in his review: "WOW- normally a wine like this costs between $75-150!!!" and talks about "over-delivering" The total surface of the vineyard of 60 ha was used in the past for half by Peter Sisseck in his assembly of the Flor de Pingus. The Finca Villacreces is an old abbey located on the "Golden Mile" along the river Duero in the appellation of origin Ribera del Duero in Spain. The total area of the estate is 115 hectares, of which 60 hectares are vineyards. These 60 hectares are spread over 15 different plots that all contribute to the quality of the wines on this impressive domain. The sandy terroir and the high location of the vineyards do not make it any easier to get the planted grapes tinta del pais (tempranillo), merlot and cabernet sauvignon ripe. The more than 100-year-old pine trees do contribute to a microclimate in which the grapes feel good and the harvests have been of an exceptionally high level, especially in recent years. Due to the high altitude, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in particular have a very difficult time ripening here. In recent years, a lot has been invested in the vineyards: drip irrigation, the sticks are tied higher to get more leaves and thus better photosynthesis and the young plantings of the newest vineyards already give an unprecedented quality of fruit. Grapes are only harvested here at optimum ripeness, resulting in beautifully concentrated wines with a fine acidity. All wines from Finca Villacreces undergo malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. Depending on the wine, the lagering on cask is determined. Of course, the harvest year also has an influence on this and the standard is deviated from. Pruno is aged for 12 months, Reserva is aged for 16 months and the Nebro is aged for 18 months. After bottling, the bottles remain in the cellar for a long time before being put on the market. For the Pruno this is shorter than for the other wines.

The Pruno is a Crianza quality level, coming from vineyards with an age of 10 to 20 years. Deep red colored wine with seductive fruit scents that blossom after some rolling in the glass. The scents are an interplay of sunny red currant, cherry, a toasty accent and some licorice. Tension and filling in the taste onset with a firm but ripe portion of tannin. Meaty whole that still reflects his youth. The juicy acidity is not out of place with this fruit-driven style. Very persistent wine with body that does not deny its origin.
