Description
For more than four decades, the Barrett family has been making wine at Chateau Montelena, with praise for wines that combine intensity and strength with a luscious, rich texture - wines that express the unique characteristics of the land they come from. People like to talk about Terroir wines here because they are averse to techniques that are used in the cellar to compensate for a non-special terroir or fruit with a chemistry box
The estate's Chateau and vineyards were originally established in the 1880s at the base of Mount St. Helena in Calistoga, on the north side of the Napa Valley, and the winery was in operation until 1949. The rise of Chateau Montelena is particularly came after Steven Spurrier organized a blind wine tasting in 1976. The best French whites from Burgundy and best reds from Bordeaux were compared to the best the US had to offer in chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon at the time. And guess what: the Nappa Valley houses from the USA won in both categories. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars by red, and by white….. Montelena. The wine world shook to its foundations, you will understand, and American (read: Napa Valley) winemakers were really on the map for the first time. The most amusing way to get to know the whole story - if you haven't already - is to watch the movie Bottle Shock (starring the brilliant and much-too-deceased Alan Rickman as Steven Spurrier). Owner/Founder Jim Barrett bought the historic site in 1972 and restored the winery and vineyards with the aim of producing the best quality Cabernet Sauvignon and they certainly succeeded but now they are also seen with their unique chardonnays which are characterized by great acidity who also ensures that the wines can age fantastically.
The Montelena Chardonnay Napa Valley has a beautiful golden straw yellow color in the glass. In the nose the wine opens with cinnamon and ripe peach, enhanced by aromas of melon, pear, honeysuckle and spices with beautiful fruity acidity of green apple and vanilla from the oak aging. In the mouth, the wine is very elegant and in terms of style rather a beautiful Burgundy than very full California wines. We taste some citrus and orange and there is good tension between the fruit, the nice acidity and civilized alcohol level (13.9%) with a nice texture and minerality nicely contrasted by freshly baked bread from the 10 months aging in new oak.

The 2020 Chardonnay was released in October 2022. As usual, it's a non-malolactic fermentation wine, matured in a relatively small proportion of new French oak, and so it reveals hints of apple, tangerine and lime on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, it's sappy, a bit linear and vibrant on the palate, finishing crisp and long. I've capped the aging estimate at a decade, but past vintages have aged successfully for 20 years or more, depending on your preferences.
One of the historic California estates that put Napa on the map following the Paris Tasting of 1976, for some reason Chateau Montelena was largely neglected by my immediate predecessor at RPWA. There is always something new to chase, so I suspect it was more that than anything else. It can sometimes be difficult to find a reason to visit longtime estates that just continue along, turning out classic wines, regardless of fads or fashion.
The Chardonnay comes from an estate-grown parcel in Oak Knoll under the lee of Mount Veeder, plus another grower in Oak Knoll and one in Coombsville. The style remains resolutely true to the historic model, with fermentation kicking off in tank before transfer into barrels (15 - 25% new French oak), and no malolactic fermentation. The wine stays in wood for 10 months, then receives a year of bottle age prior to release. There's also an annual library release, typically five years behind the current vintage.
While the Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley isn't an estate wine, Montelena is the single largest contributor of fruit to the program. It includes between 10 and 20% Merlot, from a vineyard in Oak Knoll, and spends 16 months in 20 - 30% new French oak. In contrast, the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon comes entirely from the estate's vineyards in Calistoga. It spends 22 - 26 months in barrel, then another 18 months in bottle prior to release. Fortunately, for consumers new to collecting, or restaurateurs who haven't stockpiled old vintages, there is a library release program for the Estate Cabernet Sauvignon as well.
Winemaker Matt Crafton showed me the current and library releases before finally offering to pour the yet-to-be-released 2019 Estate Cabernet and a sample of the 2021 Estate Cabernet that he had blended earlier from several barrels. Both vintages are certainly wines to look forward to, with the unfortunate reminder that there are no 2020 reds here.
