Description
Château Le Gay is a respected winery located in the Pomerol appellation of the Bordeaux region of France. The estate has a rich history and is known for producing some of the most refined and complex wines in Pomerol. In addition to their main wine, Château Le Gay, they also produce a second wine called Manoir de Gay. The Château Le Gay Pomerol is a lush and beautiful young wine with characters of blackberry, hazelnut, dark chocolate and black olives. It is full and layered with round, soft tannins and a caressing finish. Great finish.
Château Le Gay
Vineyard and Terroir :
- Location : Located in the Pomerol appellation, which is known for its clayey soils with high iron oxide content, which contributes to the unique flavor profiles of the wines.
- Grape varieties : The vineyard is mainly planted with Merlot and a small percentage of Cabernet Franc, which is typical of the region.
Production :
- Winemaking : Château Le Gay follows a careful winemaking method, using manual harvesting and strict selection procedures to use only the best grapes. Fermentation takes place in concrete and stainless steel tanks, followed by maturation in French oak barrels.
- Style : The wine is noted for its depth and concentration, with rich, ripe fruit aromas including blackcurrant, plum and cherry, complemented by complex layers of truffle, cocoa and spice. The tannins are firm but well integrated, contributing to the wine's longevity.
Reviews :
- International Wine Journalists : Château Le Gay consistently receives high scores from wine critics including Robert Parker, James Suckling and Wine Spectator, praising the wine for its elegance, complexity and potential for long aging.
Manoir de Gay
Vineyard and Terroir :
- Location : Same vineyard as Château Le Gay, with a focus on younger vines and plots not used in the first wine.
- Grape varieties : Mainly Merlot with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc.
Production :
- Winemaking : Manoir de Gay undergoes a similar careful winemaking method to Château Le Gay, but with a shorter maturation period in oak barrels, resulting in a more approachable wine.
- Style : This second wine offers a more direct and fruity expression, with aromas of ripe red berries, plums and hints of flowers and spices. The tannins are softer and the wine is drinkable sooner than its counterpart.

The 2020 Le Gay will appeal to readers who appreciate this estate's unabashedly modern, demonstrative style. Offering up rich aromas of dark berries, plum liqueur, coconut and creamy new oak, it's full-bodied, broad and unctuous, with a sweet core of ripe fruit, richly extracted tannins and a broad, heady, vanillin-inflected finish. It's a well-made effort in its style, even if the site is surely capable of more.

From: Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Le Gay was an impressive Pomerol when tasted from barrel. Now, in bottle, it has a wonderful, exquisitely-defined bouquet with perfumed blackberry and briary, incense and light pencil lead aromas. It's quite understated for Le Gay, yet blossoms in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with quite grainy tannins. Well-balanced, fresh, hints of licorice and brine towards a very saline finish. There is an edginess to this wine that I like, but it needs several years in bottle.

From: 2020 Bordeaux En Primeur: Almost Back to Normal (Jun 2021)
The 2020 Le Gay offers up a heady concoction of blackberry jam, chocolate, spice, licorice and new oak. Inky and deep, with tremendous sheer textural opulence, this is one of the most explosive, intense Pomerols readers will come across. A delicious wine, but not subtle in any way.

From: Vingt-Vingt Vins: Bordeaux 2020 (May 2021)
The 2020 Le Gay needs a little coaxing from the glass, but responds with blackberry, bilberry, pressed iris and subtle brine scents that gain intensity with aeration; the oak is very well integrated. The medium-bodied palate features fine, grainy tannins and beautiful, very pure black fruit tinged with licorice. Superb delineation toward the finish, which fans out with style. This is a wonderful Pomerol, Le Gay fulfilling its potential as one of Pomerol’s dark horses. Superb.

Ideally situated on the Pomerol plateau, Château Le Gay used to be owned by the Robin sisters. The Parent family took over the château and its 10,5 hectares in 2002.
Since the, the vineyard and cellar have been constantly evolving. Four new hectares of high-density vines were planted, and more than half of the rest of the plateau land was also restructured. Convinced that "vinification intégrale" fermentation enhances quality, Henri Parent began renovating the Château Le Gay cellar in 2014 (despite its recent renovation in 2003) in order to control the temperature of the 250 barrels during the cold maceration process, as well aw during their fermentation process.
Today, still fervently driven by pursuing quality, we use other techniques such as harvesting in several passes, creating smaller plots within some non-uniform plots and favoring cold maceration methods. Each vine is known and recorded. The vineyards are primarily planted with 90% Merlot, although the proportion of Cabernet Franc should increase a little in the net few years.
Nothing is left to chance to ensure that Château Le Gay keeps progressing.
