Persoonlijke gegevens
Les Forts de Latour is the second wine of Château Latour, one of the great names of Pauillac. Since 1966, this wine has been produced with the same care and precision as the Grand Vin. The wine comes from historic plots and young vines on the estate's exceptional terroir.
Origin and terroir
The vineyards are located in Pauillac, on deep gravel soils close to the Gironde. This terroir is ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon and provides structure, freshness, and the characteristic graphite-like tension that is so typical of great Pauillac.
Grapes and vinification
The blend consists of 69.7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26.7% Merlot, and 3.7% Petit Verdot. The wine ages in oak, with a carefully dosed proportion of new wood to refine the tannins while preserving the elegance of the fruit.
Volume 2020
2020 is considered a very strong Bordeaux year. The combination of dry summer conditions and sufficient freshness in the grapes resulted in a wine with concentration, tension, and excellent balance. This is a vintage with both an immediate impression and long aging potential.
Style and taste profile
Les Forts de Latour 2020 displays aromas of cassis, blackcurrant, and dark fruit, complemented by graphite, cedar, tobacco, and spices. On the palate, the wine is structured and precise, with ripe yet firm tannins, fresh length, and great complexity. This is a serious, classic wine with power, yet always in balance.
Food and wine pairings
Pairs excellently with grilled beef, lamb, game dishes, côte de boeuf, or hard, aged cheeses. Due to its structure and freshness, this is a wine that comes into its own with rich and savory dishes.

The 2020 Les Forts de Latour is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26.5% Merlot and 3.5% Petit Verdot, incorporating a 64-hectoliter tank of Merlot that would normally have been included in the Grand Vin but which didn't fit with this year's blend. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of minty cassis, plums, licorice, pipe tobacco and vanilla pod, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, with terrific depth at the core and a somewhat more textural, granular profile than the suave 2019.
Under CEO Frédéric Engerer and technical director Hélène Génin, unremitting perfectionism and attention to detail are the order of the day at Château Latour, so it's no surprise that this great estate has delivered some of the finest wines of the vintage in Bordeaux. Certified organic since 2018, most of Latour's historic "Enclos" is being farmed biodynamically these days, and its entirety is now cultivated by horse to minimize soil compaction and preserve intact as many old vines as possible. But the objective, above all, rather than subscribing to any particular theoretical approach, is to treat the vineyard holistically, as a system, within and with nature rather than against it. Winemaking is precise but traditional, with macerations in stainless steel followed by maturation in barrel with rackings every three months and one fining with egg whites. Great attention is paid to the choice of barrels: each lot is tasted, and its style defined, before it's barreled down in cooperage adapted to that style. But if these methods realize the potential of this great site, what makes Latour's site so great? After all, this isn't the only vineyard to occupy the quaternary gravel terrace that makes its appearance along the banks of the Gironde. When I posed this question, Hélène Génin's response was to point to Latour's lenses of blue clay interfingered with and underlying those gravels. It's these pockets of clay in just the right places, Génin contends, that contain the secret to the wine's elegantly muscular power and immense longevity.

Les Forts de Latour Pauillac 2020
Friday, Mar 31, 2023
Blue fruits and lead pencil come through here. Medium to full body. Firm and silky tannins and a crisp and citrusy finish. Nice zest. Floral and fruity. Al dente fruit. Needs four or five years to show its excellence. Try after 2028.

From: Cellar Favorite: Château Latour 2026 New Releases (Feb 2026)
The 2020 Les Forts de Latour is superb. Hints of gravel, dried herbs, game and licorice weave through a core of dark red/purplish fruit. Spice, cedar and sweet pipe tobacco follow. The purity of the flavors is just striking. Initially a touch reticent, the 2020 fleshes out beautifully with a bit of air. I would give this at least another year or two in bottle. A magnificent Forts de Latour.

The Château Latour is one of the most famous wineries in the world. It is located in the Bordeaux in Pauillac. It is located on the border with the Saint-Julien wine region. Château Latour is classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé according to the Bordeaux wine classification system of 1855. The estate covers 60 hectares and approximately 78% cabernet sauvignon, 17% merlot and a little cabernet franc and petit are added.
History
Château Latour has played an important role in the history of the region. Throughout the centuries, many old documents about this winery have been preserved in the archives. This unique heritage shows extraordinary stability and continuity in the estate and those who have worked there throughout Latour's long history, which has undoubtedly been an important factor in the exceptional regularity and quality of the wines.
The oldest document with the mention Latour dates from 1331 and is an authorization given by Lord Pons to Gaucelme de Castillon to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert. Château Latour then appears in 1378 in Jean Froissart's "Chronicles". This was the time of the 100 Years' War. The "Tour de Saint Maubert" was a fortress to guard the estuary, manned by Breton soldiers for the King of France. After a three-day siege, the Anglo-Gascon army seized the fort and installed a garrison.
