Description
Château de Beaucastel is set in a magical setting dotted with vineyards, ancient olive trees and truffle oaks. Beaucastel, that is the most famous wine of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Here you will find nature in its purest form and its power comes to rest. The typical rolled boulders are the secret of its vineyards in which gnarled vines grow in the traditional 'gobelet' shape. On this ancient soil we find the 13 grape varieties that are allowed in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. All these 13 grape varieties form the basis of the mythical blends of Château de Beaucastel, where they are grown biodynamically. With this they are one of the last to use the richness and complexity that this blend offers.
The history of Beaucastel starts at the beginning of the 17th century. The Perrins appeared in the early 20th century. We are now five generations further and there is a world company in the field of quality wines. From very affordable to the absolute top. Everything about the vision, technique and vineyard management that has given Beaucastel the coveted, global top position, applies to the vineyards and wines with the other appellations of origin, such as Ventoux, Luberon, Cotes du Rhone, Gigondas, Vinsobres, Rasteau and Vacqueyras. While retaining its own character; the mutual differences between the wines are great and prove the respectful working method
The Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is a great wine. It is a blend of 75% Mourvèdre, 10% Grenache, 10% Syrah and the rest Counoise, all from very old vineyards. Only a very limited number of bottles are made of this top version of Beuacastel and this should not be missing in a top wine collection. In the Wine-Advocate review, Jeb Dunnuck writes "Showing even more complexity and length than the regular bottling, there's a chance this could reach a triple-digit score down the road"
In the glass it has a deep black-ruby red color. The wine has an incredible minerality along with black and blue fruit, forest floor and leather. Full-bodied, smeared with ink, concentrated with serious tannin so let it rest in the cellar for a while and this version certainly has a drinking window to 2045+ As they say at Chateau Beaucastel themselves this is "A wine to be kept for your retirement"
Ratings: 96 Jane Anson, 97-99 Wine Advocate, 99 James Suckling, 95-97 Jeb Dunnuck, 98 Decanter, 98+ The Wine Independent (L. Perrotti-Brown)

Tasted from foudre, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is approximately 60% Mourvèdre (from the same parcel, year after year), with the balance a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. Ripe plums and truffle-like notes mark the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and rich, with a long, velvety finish. Showing even more complexity and length than the regular bottling, there's a chance this could reach a triple-digit score down the road.
Always one of the highlights of my visits in Chateaneuf du Pape, the cellars at Beaucastel were a bit dusty when I arrived, as the long-awaited expansion had just gotten underway. Built using the latest practices in sustainability and conservation, it's expected to be completed in 2024. The 2021 Syrah had just been picked, and the expectation was that the Grenache would be harvested beginning the following day. Something worth noting, although the family doesn't actively promote it, is that Beaucastel's farming has been certified organic since 1966, and the vineyards have been farmed along biodynamic principles since 1974 (although not certified as such).
Marc Perrin and his cousin César Perrin, who conducted the tasting, are high on the prospects for 2020, which they compare to 2016. "It was a beautiful summer, all the way through October," said César.
"What I really like is the finesse of it," said Marc. "With global warming, Mourvèdre is performing better and better here."
Their opinions aside, don't discount the bottled 2019s, which are also excellent. The 2019 Hommage à Jacques Perrin is simply stupendous, and not to be missed by serious collectors.
As always, my visit here included a substantial lineup of the Famille Perrin wines from other appellations, which will be included in the next installment of my Southern Rhône coverage.
