Description
This Caiarossa Super Tuscan belongs to the top of the Tuscan wines and is consistently rated very highly by the renowned wine critics. Caiarossa is a blend of a number of different grape varieties and is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Syrah and Alicante, with the saturated and dark fruit aromas of the Cabernet grapes in pole position. The bouquet presents a beautiful first wave of dark fruit that pushes the boundaries of ripeness, but remains safely within the realm of elegance. The aromas are balanced and concentrated with blackberry, cassis and light accents of salt or rusty mineral. The wine is not too constructed or big in the mouth, but rather shows a delicate level of elegance. In short, a wine with a perfect balance and an excellent quality with always high scores for this Super Tuscan.
The 2020 vintage was the warmest year they had seen in Caiarossa since 1800. Overall, the 2020 vintage allowed the grapes to ripen slowly, reaching both phenolic and sugar maturity at the same time. The weather conditions were excellent! Time was taken to select and harvest each grape from each plot in the most harmonious balance between freshness and ripeness.
All varieties were vinified separately in cement or wooden tanks, with slow fermentation and soft extractions. Once malolactic fermentation takes place, the final blend is determined and the Caiarossa is mixed. For the 2020, it is a blend of 28% Cabernet Franc, 23% Syeah, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 13% Sangiovese, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Grenache. The wine is then aged for 14 months in barriques, 30% of which are new oak. After maturation, the wine rests for two months in concrete tanks before being bottled and is aged in the bottle for a further year, after which it is distributed worldwide via the Place du Bordeaux.

The Caiarossa 2019 Caiarossa is a complex blend featuring Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Syrah and Alicante from vineyard sites across this beautiful property in the high hills off the Tuscan coast. This organic and biodynamic wine is full and generous to the palate, yet it never feels heavy or too extracted. The wine is balanced and fresh with thick layers of dark fruit, crushed stone, tobacco and exotic spice.

The 2020 Caiarossa is the best wine I have tasted off this property in some time, perhaps ever. Rich, deep and yet not at all heavy, the 2020 offers up an exotic mélange of dark cherry/plum fruit, mocha, licorice, new leather and incense. All the elements are so nicely balanced.
- By Antonio Galloni on August 2023
I was deeply impressed with these new releases from Caiarossa. There was a time, a few years ago, when the wines were far less interesting. Since then, the team led by estate manager Alexander Van Beek, winemaker Jérôme Poisson and well-known Bordeaux consultant Axel Marchal have cleaned up the cellar and increased their focus on quality. The oldest vineyards here are just over 20 years old, so there is every reason to believe the best is yet to come. It's interesting to see that the trajectory at Caiarossa more or less tracks a similar increase in quality at Château Giscours in Margaux, Caiarossa's sister property, also owned by the Albada Jelgersma family.

Scented herbs and warm, sun-kissed black fruit on the nose - no surprise given it was the warmest summer since 1800 but with significant rain in June and at the end of August that allowed the grapes to ripen correctly. This smells like baked blackcurrants and roses. Supple and ample, generous and filling with gorgeous plump, but also quite defined, tannins that give the structure and the sense of tension. Fruit is tangy and ripe and with the acidity you get a push-pull of sharpness and ripeness. Round, direct, forward, this has energy and sculpting and I love the freshness that really lingers on the tongue. Well executed with lots of fragrance and a mineral, stone grip on the finish alongside dried herbs and liquorice spice. A delicious Tuscan wine with French flair (same owner as Château Giscours in Margaux, AJ Domaines). Jérôme Poisson general manager of both estates since 2020 and Axel Marchat consultant since 2016. A blend of 28% Cabernet Franc, 23% Syeah, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 13% Sangiovese, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Grenache. Each plot and variety was vinifed separately and spontaneously in concrete and wooden tanks. After malolactic fermentation the wine was blended and aged for 14 months in barriques, 30% new, before spending two months resting in concrete and a further year in bottle before release.

The 2020 Caiarossa is a blend of 28% Cabernet Franc, 23% Syrah, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 13% Sangiovese, 4% Petit Verdot, and 1% Grenache. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it is a little broody to start, with notions of tar and rubber followed by a core of baked plums and cracked black pepper with touches of dried herbs and damp soil. The full-bodied palate is full of pepper-laced black fruits with rounded tannins and compelling freshness, finishing long and spicy.

Combines the structure of the Bordeaux varieties and the generous welcome of Tuscany, here translating into dark fruits that soften to delicious toasted spices, and plenty of liqourice, cloves, incense and underbrush. This was the warmest vintage since 1800, with harvest from the end of August until September 22, but the concentration of the vintage is mitigated by plenty of acidity. Excellent structure, and it's a thoroughly enjoyable, precise and well made wine, with a kick of eucaplyptus freshness on the finish, along with fragrant spices. Jerome Poisson winemaker, 31ha of vines, owned by AJ Domaines. 30% new oak. Axel Marchal consultant. Vinified in a mix of concrete and wooden tanks, then barrel ageing followed by a year in bottle before release.

The domain Caiarossa is located in a beautiful Tuscan village called Riparbella. The name Caiarossa is an ode to the soil. It consists of quartz and (pebble) stones, with an intense red (rosso) color. Caia comes from the Greek word Gaia, 'mother earth'. Caiarossa has been owned by the Albada Jelgersma family since 2004, which also includes Château Giscours and Château Du Tertre, both located in Margaux.
Caiarossa has about 40 hectares and is located on the west side of the hill, with the Mediterranean Sea on the other side. Various grape varieties have been planted here, such as Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. From the end of August to the end of November, people work hard to harvest the grapes, which is all done manually. After harvest, the grapes soak and ferment for about 4 weeks in concrete or wooden tanks. In order to get the best expression of the terroir in the wine, a spontaneous fermentation is chosen. Subsequently, a malolactic fermentation takes place and the wine continues to mature in the cellars. Caiarossa not only works biodynamically, but also according to the ancient Chinese art "Feng Shui". The shapes, colors, light and materials in the wine cellars are all adapted to this.
