The sunniest part of the Tignanello slopes is home to the Solaia vineyard. The very best grapes from the very best vineyard. Everything else is passion, meticulous care, and research. These are the secrets of Solaia, along with the finest Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Sangiovese grapes from the eponymous vineyard. The Marchesi Antinori Solaia is another blockbuster from Tuscany's leading wine estate. The blend has a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet Franc and a slightly lower percentage of Sangiovese. The current blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Sangiovese, and 15% Cabernet Franc (which has been gaining ground in recent years, especially with climate change). The name Solaia comes from Il Sole, Italian for sun. The vineyards for this top-quality Marchese Antinori wine cover 10 hectares and are located on the southwest slopes at an altitude of between 350 and 400 meters. The soil is stony and marlstone. They are located in the Santa Cristina-Val di Pesa area in the Chianti Classico region, next to the Tignanello vineyards. This top Antinori wine is only produced in the best vintages.
The Solaia is a full-bodied ruby-red wine with beautiful aromas of black pepper, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, plums, and preserved fruit. The palate is smooth and perfectly balanced with the nose, revealing hints of fruit, licorice, and coffee. The tannins are not overpowering, ensuring a beautifully full finish. This is a generous and highly expressive wine with abundant dark fruit, spices, and sweet tobacco. The tannins are beautifully velvety and soft. This is a beautiful wine that collectors will love.

Sommy Pairing Beschrijving

The Wine Advocate RP 96 Reviewed by: Monica Larner Release Price: $300 Drink Date: 2024 - 2045 Inky dark in appearance, the 2020 Solaia is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller percentages of Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. This vintage unfolds to exuberant richness and thick layers of blackberry and plum. The tannins are sweet and expertly crafted, adding both depth and fruit weight. The 2020 vintage is quite bold, and it plays its best cards in terms of texture and mouthfeel. It’s a bigger, more accessible wine compared to the last two vintages on the market. Spice, toasted coffee bean and more dark fruit color this full-bodied Tuscan red.
One of the biggest news stories to hit fine wine this year is the full acquisition of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars in Napa by Tuscany’s Marchesi Antinori in May 2023. The Antinori family enjoyed a 16-year partnership with the celebrated winery founded by Warren Winiarski in 1970. It is now the full owner. The announcement was made by the Antinori family and long-time USA partner Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, which has a portfolio of wines in the American Northwest (Washington and Oregon). Marchesi Antinori is the only Italian company to own a winery in Napa. Marchese Piero Antinori first traveled to California’s wine country in the 1960s and fell in love. In 1985, his family started making wine in Napa (with the company known as Antica, which is short for “Antinori in California”). “It is an honor for me and my family to make good on a promise made to my friend Warren Winiarski 16 years ago,” says Marchese Piero Antinori. “We wanted to safeguard the values and the heritage of the prestigious Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars.” The Stag’s Leap 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon was singled out in the celebrated Judgement of Paris in 1976 that pitted the best of Californian wine against Bordeaux. It sparked a revolution in the world of fine wine.

The 2020 Solaia is an infant. I expected a more exuberant wine, but the 2020 is built along more classic lines. Black cherry, plum, gravel, incense, smoke, pencil shavings and spice all open effortlessly. As always, Solaia is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine, but it is a Cabernet that is distinctly Italian, with plenty of Tuscan acid and structure driving through the mid-palate and into the finish. The 2020 is a terrific example of the recent stylistic shift at Antinori. In the past, richness and opulence were qualities of a vintage that would have been amplified in the vineyard and cellar. Today, the aim is to capture a more balanced expression of these kinds of vintages, and that very much comes through.

I tasted a wide range of wines from Antinori, including upcoming releases from recently acquired vineyards that will inform a new range of Gran Seleziones. As much as the higher-end wines are consistently outstanding, I have to say I find the showing of the entry-level wines more impressive, given their quality and production levels. There’s a lot of ambition these days at Antinori.

More information about Antinori
Marquis Piero Antinori is in charge and is assisted by his three daughters: Albiera, Allegra and Alessia. Funny those three A's. We are not going to bother you with all the awards that have been received over the years, because then this price list can no longer go through the letterbox. There are two red wines that are available on allocation and that one would like to get a few bottles from all over the world and that are Tignanello and Solaia and we also have these in our range at Grandcruwijnen.
In 1180, Ugo and Antinori di Rinuccino were officially named as owners of Castello di Combiate; a century later, the family who had moved to Florence were included in the register of the silk trade cooperative. In 1385, Giovanni di Piero, an indirect descendant, entered the wine guild as an apprentice. Since then, the wine-growing tradition of the Antinori family has been continuous. With the establishment of the Marchesi Antinori winery, the peak was reached in 1895 and already in 1898 the winery was built in San Casciano Val di Pesa, which is still the center of the widely branched group of properties in all major cultivation areas of Tuscany, Umbria. , Piemonte (since the early 90s through the purchase of the wine cellar Prunotto), Apulia and even California. The traditional house participating in the modern Tuscan wine-growing revolution owes much of its prestige to its former chief vinologist Giacomo Tachis, who produced exceptional wines such as Sassicaia, Tignanello (especially sangiovese), Solaia (especially cabernet) and many others. the other was responsible. Vinologist Renzo Cotarella also created one of the best chardonnays in Italy in the Umbrian Castello della Sala.
