Description
In the heart of Albariño cultivation, Cambados, Xurxo Alba produces its Albamar wines in a traditional way, where, above all, he uses the power of nature. Rich, juicy, and an example of pure craftsmanship. The albarinos are very famous, especially as the vineyards are close to the sea on a plateau of lime, clay and slate. This gives all wines an unprecedented complexity. In addition to the white albarinos, a beautiful red wine has also been made from native grapes (espaldeiro, Mencia and Caino red).
The spicy and peppery O Esteiro Caíño needs time to show its character. This is the variety that is easier to recognize - dried roses, crushed peppercorns and ash/pumice stone. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, with lively acidity with balsamic aromas. This is Atlantic, maritime red and only around 1,300 bottles were filled, so it is also very exclusive.

I found more complete ripeness in the 2020 O Esteiro Caíño, which shows strong aromas of black peppercorns, hints of herbs and flowers and a palate with acid berry flavors and a light mouthfeel.
Xurxo Alba Padín keeps planting more vines to increase his vineyard holdings (the total will be close to seven hectares of vines planted since 2020). In 2024/2025, he will plant the last half hectare with Albariño, Caíño, Espadeiro and Mencía. As for the current wines, we tasted 2021 and 2022, including some wines from Valdeorras and Ribeira Sacra. He compared 2021 with 2017, two years of very fresh wines. Some of the 2021s have to be the finest wines he has ever produced. I found the reds more difficult than ever. He has also started producing some ancestral sparkling wines.

Wild berries with dried grass and dried flowers on the nose. The palate is tense, floral, pleasant, salty and edgy. A blend of caino, espadeiro and mencia that spends a full year aging.

Brilliant violet. Intense, mineral-driven aromas of redcurrant, cherry pit, licorice and violet, with a hint of incense in the background. Silky, penetrating and emphatically spicy, offering bitter cherry and red berry flavors and an exotic twist of blood orange. Shows very good focus and refreshing bite on a long, minerally finish framed by silky, harmonious tannins. This vibrant wine reminded me quite a bit of something from the Loire Valley.
