Description
A wet winter prepared the vines for a healthy start to the season. Spring was drier than average and the vines responded quickly as they grew and flowered well and quickly. Summer saw warm dry days with cool nights which allowed the grapes to ripen while retaining their freshness and natural acidity. The grapes for this wine are sourced from six vineyards in the Barossa. Across the road is the oldest parcel of Shiraz, hand-picked from Eden Valley vines planted in 1854. The vines have an average age of 110 years, 69% of which are sourced from Eden Valley and 31% from the Barossa Valley. Eden Valley Shiraz provides the exotic aromas and flavour structure while Barossa Valley Shiraz offers rich flavours along with complexity and concentration. After harvest the wine is matured for 21 months in 25% new French oak barrels and hogsheads.
The wine is deep red in colour with purple hues. It gives aromas of dark red cherries, licorice and red raspberries. Aromatically this is a wine that is full of different types of fruit. Everything combines in the mouth with rich and complex flavours. The freshness of Eden Valley is combined with the depth of Barossa Valley. Perfectly balanced, elegant and simply a beautiful expression of Barossa Shiraz.

The 2019 The Octavius hails from a warm and dry year. This is the new-release Octavius for Yalumba and comprises 55% Eden Valley fruit, the balance from Barossa Valley. On the nose, the wine is spiced and dark, with torched vanilla pod, salted licorice, blueberry and crushed rocks. The tannins are firm and clench a little through the finish, which is the hallmark of the season in Barossa, as far as I see it. This is a powerful wine that is savory and earthy. 14.5% alcohol, 6.2 total acidity, 3.56 pH, sealed under natural cork.

Really expressive, with aromas of violets, bark, warm stones and blackberries with a touch of dried herbs. Deep and concentrated but graceful, sensibly crafted with firm tannins that turn velvety. Vibrant dark fruit flavors conclude in an elegant finish. Already drinkable, but will improve with a couple of years of cellaring.

This stylish 2019 The Octavius, which is a blend of 55% Eden and 45% Barossa Shiraz, is beautifully layered with initial aromas of violets, sage and white pepper followed by a rich vein of focused licorice. Sturdily, and tightly bound with powdery tannins, a superb mix of bright fruit pastille and dark earthy flavors are underpinned by wood smoke. Immensely complex and energetic, held tight and compact through to a finish of extreme length. This is benchmark Barossa Shiraz.
