O Gran Meín Lustro 2019 is a unique expression of Ribeiro and at the same time a statement about the aging potential of the best white wines from Galicia. This wine was not released immediately after bottling, but received an additional five years of bottle aging before release. The result is a complex and layered wine that combines the historic style of Ribeiro with the precision of modern winemaking.
A vineyard with a history dating back to the 12th century
The foundation of O Gran Meín Lustro lies in the historic Meín vineyard, a plot whose viticultural history dates back to the 12th century. Together with several surrounding plots around the village of Meín, this vineyard forms the heart of the wine. The terraces are situated in the Avia Valley and are characterized by soils of weathered granite, locally known as sábrego . These poor soils result in low yields and give the wine its characteristic tension and minerality.
The 2019 vintage experienced a classic Galician growing season with sufficient rainfall in the spring and a warm, dry summer. The harvest took place between September 9 and October 3. Because the different grape varieties do not ripen simultaneously, the same vineyards were harvested multiple times so that each grape could be picked at the optimal moment.
Traditional Ribeiro blend of seven grape varieties
While many white wines from Spain are based on a single grape variety, O Gran Meín Lustro is a tribute to the traditional blends of Ribeiro. The wine consists of Treixadura, Albariño, Torrontés, Godello, Loureira, Caíño Blanco, and Lado. Treixadura forms the backbone of the blend, while the other varieties provide extra aromatic complexity, freshness, and structure.
Each grape variety and each plot was fermented and aged separately. Various materials such as stainless steel, concrete, earthenware, and oak were used for this purpose. This approach makes it possible to preserve the character of each grape and each plot individually before the final blend is created.
Five years of bottle aging for extra depth
After twelve months of sur lie aging, the wine was bottled in the autumn of 2020. Instead of being sold immediately, part of the production remained in the cellar for another five years. This is exceptional for a white Ribeiro and underscores the winery's confidence in the aging potential of these vineyards.
In the glass, O Gran Meín Lustro 2019 offers much more than just fruit. Aromas of citrus, ripe white peach, fennel, dried flowers, and subtle spices are supported by pronounced minerality and a refined texture. The extra bottle aging has given the wine more depth and complexity without compromising the fresh core that is so characteristic of the best wines from Galicia.
With O Gran Meín Lustro 2019, Viña Meín harks back to a time when the great white wines of Ribeiro were known for their ability to age for years. This wine shows that that tradition is still very much alive today.

Parker
(RP 93) They kept some 4,000 bottles of their top white wine and released it five years after the harvest. The 2019 O Gran Mein Branco Lustro ("lustro" is the Spanish word for a period of five years) has a pretty advanced nose, with honeyed and caramel notes and hints of toasted cereals, and it has a polished palate with a bitter touch in the finish. It feels quite ready. Perhaps the warm year is evolving a little faster than anticipated. The regular O Gran Mein Branco from 2023 won't be released until 2029, because that wine will always be released six years after the harvest as Lustro. They will also release limited quantities of 2021 and 2022 but will skip 2020 as Lustro. It's been in bottle since the 2020 autumn.
There are some changes at Viña Mein and the Galician wineries from the Pago de Carraovejas group. First of all, the operation to purchase Tricó in Rías Baixas didn't go through, so the group remains with Viña Mein and Emilio Rojo in Galicia. Technical director Laura Montero left, so all the white wines from the group are now under the control of Javier Blanco, who has been making the whites from Ossian in the zone of Rueda and now also Marañones in Gredos. Almudena Calvo remains coordinator for all the reds in the group. In the future, they will discontinue the young red Mein and instead focus on one single red, the Gran Mein Tinto. (94) Aromas of fine lees, sour cream, minerals, green apples and chalk. Deliciously dry and austere, with lots of crumbled minerals in the finish. Full and intense but dissolved. Long but low key. Very serious. Drink now or hold.

(96) The 2019 O Gran Mein Lustros blends Treixadura, Lado, Albariño, Caíño Blanco, Godello and Loureiro from Ribeiro. It opens with a complex aromatic profile, where reductive and leesy notes mingle with honey, laurel and acacia in delicate layers. Rich and intense, the palate is enveloping, with a creamy texture that frames the year’s well-defined acidity. This is a re-release after five years in bottle. The 2019 revives the seductive magic of mature Ribeiros.
Located in Leiro, Viña Mein is one of Ribeiro’s most beautiful estates. Alma de Carraovejas acquired the winery in 2019, which led to a refinement in house style and drive towards wines of greater precision. Alexia de Tena has taken over winemaking with the 2025 vintage. This estate continues to capitalize on its carefully tended granite-based vineyards. In 2024, Mein released the second edition of the O Gran Mein Lustros, a compelling Treixadura aged for five years in bottle. Viña Mein is a benchmark estate in Ribeiro. Drinking Window: 2025 - 2035

Viña Meín is one of those wineries that instantly sparks curiosity. Small in scale, but big in story. Tucked away in the green hills of Galicia, wine has been made here for centuries — and you can taste that history in every bottle.
Viña Meín history & location
The estate is located in Leiro, in the heart of Ribeiro, one of Spain’s oldest wine regions. As early as the 12th century, monks from the San Clodio monastery were cultivating vines in this valley. Centuries later, in 1988, Javier Alén breathed new life into the property by replanting the historic vineyards. Today, Viña Meín has grown into a benchmark in Ribeiro, with a strong focus on local grape varieties and authentic wines.
Grape varieties in Ribeiro
The strength of Viña Meín lies in the diversity of its grapes. Treixadura is the leading variety, loved for its fresh and aromatic character. Alongside it are Albariño, Godello, Torrontés, Loureira, Lado, and Albilla. For the reds, they work with native grapes such as Caíño Longo, Sousón, Brancellao, Ferrón, and Caíño Tinto. Together, they create a wide palette of flavors that is unique to Ribeiro.
Terroir and vineyards
The vineyards are spread across small plots in the Avia Valley. The landscape is rugged and hilly, with terraces and steep slopes. The soil is mainly granite and sand, locally known as “sábrego.” The climate plays a crucial role: warm days and cool nights, with temperature differences that can reach up to twenty degrees. This slows down ripening and gives the wines tension and aromatic depth. Each vineyard has its own personality, which shines through in the diversity of the wines.
How the wines are made
At Viña Meín, it’s all about respecting the grape. Harvesting is done by hand, in small crates. Most of the white wines ferment in stainless steel to preserve freshness, while the best plots are aged in large oak barrels and spend months on the lees. This adds depth and complexity, without letting oak dominate. The red wines are traditionally fermented and aged, with a focus on finesse rather than sheer power.
Specialties & facts
What makes Viña Meín stand out is how it blends old traditions with modern techniques. In 2019, the winery joined forces with Pago de Carraovejas, a renowned producer from Ribera del Duero. Since then, there has been more attention to sustainability and precision in the vineyards. Winemaker Laura Montero leads the cellar, with support from French oenologist Dominique Roujou de Boubée. Together, they are putting Ribeiro’s native grapes more firmly on the map.
