The 2019 Proprietary Red Continuum is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot all from the estate's vineyard on Pritchard Hill. Aged in two-thirds new French oak, with the balance in barrels for second or third use and a single concrete amphora.
In the glass, this killer is colored deep garnet purple. On the nose an incredible array of seductive aromas of violet, lavender, rosehip, cherry, currant, dark chocolate, cigar box plus hints of bay leaves and a sort of crushed wet slate. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with vibrant black fruit. fueled by red fruit, spice and mineral notes. It is framed with firm, gritty, super ripe tannins and ends with fantastic fragrance and freshness. This is (once again) a masterpiece by Tim Mondavi and his team and is a wine that can age gracefully without any problems. If you want to drink it in the short term, we recommend that you decant it, so that the wine can show its true character. You can keep this wine for at least another 30+ years. This is a beautiful 1.5 liter magnum in a nice box.

Continuum's 2019 Proprietary Red is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot, all from the estate vineyard on Pritchard Hill. Aged in two-thirds new French oak, with the balance in second or third-use barrels and a single concrete amphora, it's remarkably dark in hue, a deep, saturated purple in the glass. On the nose, it's floral and herbal yet fruit-driven, with violets, sage and bay leaf adding nuance to black cherries, while the palate is full-bodied, plush and silky. There's an enticing yin-yang to the interplay between high-toned herbals and bass notes of dark chocolate in this dense, concentrated effort that finishes lush and long. It's a magnificent wine that should drink well for at least two decades.
Proprietors Tim Mondavi and his daughter Carissa recently launched the 2019 Continuum at a tasting in New York City commemorating the Mondavi family's 100 years of winemaking. And while it was interesting to try some of the older Mondavi-involved wines presented—Robert Mondavi 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, 1995 Opus One, 1998 Seña, 1996 Luce, 2003 Ornellaia, 2014 Continuum—at the very least, it was an opportunity to review the newest release without making the trek up Pritchard Hill. And since I had tasted the first releases of Continuum in New York with Tim and Carissa years ago, it tied in nicely.
The first three vintages of Continuum were composed of purchased fruit from Robert Mondavi Winery's portion of To Kalon, rather than from the estate vineyard on Pritchard Hill, and there is no doubt that the current wines are head and shoulders above (and different) from those first years. In fact, the wines have continued to evolve as Tim and Carissa have learned more about their site's multiple vineyard blocks and Tim seems to have loosened his winemaker's compulsion to control absolutely everything possible, while still retaining a painstaking attention to detail. Simply put, Continuum's 2019 Proprietary Red is a compelling wine.

Continuum Estate is located on the Pritchard hills in Vaca Mountains. About 60 miles northeast of San Francisco and about 8 miles southwest of St. Helena. From here you have a beautiful view of Oakland. On a good day you will see the Opus One Winery. And that is no coincidence, the Continuum Estate is a project of the Mondavi family (Tim Mondavi, his sister Marcia and Margrit Mondavi), who acquired two wine estates here in 2005. They merged them and had star architect Howard Becken build a new winery. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the well-known wineries Bryant, Chappellet and Colgin. The route was therefore clear from the start: Super-premium à la Napa Valley. And the conditions are excellent. There is the usual high-end winery, an excellent hillside location, but also the right terroir: volcanic and iron-rich soils.
The winery covers a total of 172 hectares, of which 41 hectares are currently planted with grapes, 60 hectares are planted. There are many olive trees and lush flora. Of course, the cabernet sauvignon (55%) is in the foreground here in Napa Valley, but other Bordeaux grape varieties are also grown, such as the cabernet franc (30%), merlot (4%) and petit verdot (11%). It's almost superfluous to mention that Continuum Estate didn't take much time to join California's high society and yet... that for six years now these blockbusters have received 96 points from Parker is very remarkable. If it says Mondavi, it also contains Mondavi! Robert Parker writes: "Tim Mondavi's new project continues to display exceptional promise. Kudos to Tim Mondavi for continuing the legacy of his family”
