Description
One family: Antinori, one passion: Wine. Brothers Piero and Lodovico Antinori own the magnificent Tenuta di Biserna in Tocane. According to Parker, "Tenuta di Biserno remains one of the best-kept secrets in Bolgheri." The Pino di Bisernos is a true representation of the unique vineyard estate owned by Tenuta di Biserna. The special blend of grapes creates a classic Bolgheri wine. The Biserno Il Pino is a blend of Cabernet Franc 17%, Merlot 38%, Cabernet Sauvignon 22%, Petit Verdot 15%, and Other 8%. It releases a deep red color in the glass, surrounded by brilliant ruby highlights. Aromas of red berries and cherries explode on the nose, accompanied by peppery hints intertwined with myrtle from the Mediterranean maquis, then meld with toasted notes conveyed by the oak. The palate opens with a lively and persistent acidity, bringing freshness. This is all enhanced by soft, silky tannins on the palate, which create a silky smoothness in a very enjoyable wine.

The Tenuta di Biserno 2022 Il Pino di Biserno delivers a ripe fruit profile with blackberry confit and sweet cherry pie. Those warm vintage tones are followed by an ample use of oak that adds baking spice and toasted nutmeg. There is a hint of campfire ash or something blackened or toasted at the core of this full-bodied Tuscan blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Verdot. I pick up a note of dryness on the otherwise velvety tannins.
Started in 2001, Tenuta di Biserno is the passion project of Lodovico Antinori, his bother Piero Antinori and nephew Niccolò Marzichi Lenzi (who is the general manager today). It has 40 hectares of vines in Bibbona on the Tuscan Coast at 90 meters above sea level on alluvial clay-limestone soils. The grapes planted are Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

A cedary twist to the typical notes of black olives, tobacco, paprika and black fruit. Medium- to full-bodied with prominent, fine-grained tannins and fruit. Long, demure and tight. Needs at least one more year to soften and open up. Drink from 2026.

The 2022 Il Pino di Biserno is the estate's second wine. Dark cherry, plum, spice, tobacco, mocha and rose petal are nicely lifted. This gracious red is very nicely done. Mid-weight structure and brisk acids are very much front and center.

I was deeply impressed with these wines from Biserno. The new Cabernet Franc Colle Mezzano di Biserno is quite promising. Niccolò Marzichi Lenzi now runs the estate following the exit of his uncle, founder Lodovico Antinori. Lenzi has brought a new feeling of youthful energy to his family’s estate, along with a contemporary approach that results in wines with a bit more vibrancy than those from the Lodovico Antinori era. The entry-level Insoglio del Cinghiale remains one of my favorite wines in its peer group. After a few quiet years during the generational transition, Biserno is once again an estate to watch closely.

In 1995, Lodovico Antinori discovered the potential of an area on the outskirts of Bolgheri for viticulture. After an evaluation, he saw the unique characteristics of this area and was convinced that he could create something new and unique in the wine world. A few years later, the Antinori family (Piero, Lodovico, Ilaria and his son Niccolò) and landowner Umberto Mannoni started founding Tenuta di Biserno. Adjacent to the historic village of Bolgheri, with a beautiful view of the Tyrrhenian sea.
The Tuscan winery has 49 hectares of estate and is located in Alta Maremma in western Tuscany between the hills of Bibbona. Due to the specific soil and climate characteristics, the area is divided into two zones. The Bolgheri area has a subsoil of rock; on these 40 hectares, the vines for Biserno and Il Pino di Biserno are planted. The vines planted on the vineyards are mainly Cabernet Franc and Merlot and in smaller quantities Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Tenuta Campo di Sasso, on the other hand, has 56 hectares with mixed (and mainly) sandy soils. This area is close to the sea and is therefore very suitable for varieties such as Syrah and Vermentino. Occhione and Insoglio del Cinghiale come from this area.
