Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the legendary owner of Château Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. Combining the great winemaking traditions and innovations of both families, the founders’ sole goal was to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley.
Opus One, like all great works, was born out of passion. Dedicated to uncompromising quality, Opus One’s sole purpose is to express this vision and passionate spirit for generations to come. This estate has been making great Cabernet-based wines for the past 10 years. Drink it for the next 30+ years.
VINTAGE 2019: Abundant spring rains, almost double the annual average, saturated the soil and provided sufficient water for the growing season. The first signs of budding were observed in the vineyard on March 27, 15 days later than normal. This delay resulted in later flowering and veraison. However, warmer temperatures towards the end of summer accelerated development and ripening. Harvest began on September 10, a few days earlier than average. The harvest lasted four weeks and activity in the cellar was calm and steady.
The Opus One 2019 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 78%, Merlot 8%, Petit Verdot 6%, Cabernet Franc 6% and Malbec 2%. The wine has been aged for 19 months in new French oak. The Opus one has intense aromas of black plums, blueberries, blackcurrant and dried rose petals, accentuated by mineral undertones. The creamy, satiny texture is framed by fine-grained tannins. The freshness and soft glow of acidity create a subtle tension with dark fruit flavors, savoury spices, espresso and cocoa. A delicate bitterness of dark chocolate lingers in the finish.

Winemaker Michael Silacci commented that usually the blends are finished in January or February after the vintage. This year, with the 2019s, he was still tweaking the blend, but he did mention that this is "pretty close to the final blend."
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Opus One leaps from the glass with notes of Black Forest cake, Morello cherries, mulberries and fresh blackcurrants plus hints of licorice, wilted roses, Sichuan pepper and iron ore. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with juicy black, blue and red fruits, framed by velvety tannins and background freshness, finishing on a compelling earthy/mineral note. Tasted as a barrel sample, this is a truly magnificent Opus One in the making!

Elegantly styled, despite some serious heft, this offers a mix of alluring mulberry, griotte and cassis notes bearing a gently mulled edge, while flashes of apple wood, sweet bay leaf and red tea flicker along the edges. Very refined in feel, with seamless structure extending the finish so the fruit can linger. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Drink now through 2038. 27,800 cases made.

In the early 1990s, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of the world-renowned Château Mouton Rothschild, made a trip to Napa Valley. Impressed by the potential for winemaking in this Californian region, he asked local experts who he should meet. Without hesitation, Robert Mondavi was recommended, a pioneer in the American wine industry.
Robert Mondavi, who started his own winery in Napa Valley in 1966 after leaving his family business, was known for his passion and drive for wine. His dream was to put Napa Valley on the map as a top wine region. When he met Baron Philippe de Rothschild, it sparked a unique opportunity to launch an extraordinary wine project: the birth of Opus One.
The fusion of Bordeaux and Napa Valley wine styles
In 1976, Mondavi and the baron met to discuss the details of their collaboration. This partnership resulted in the creation of a wine that combined the elegance of Bordeaux with the power of Napa Valley. The first wine, simply called “Opus,” was made in 1979 using a blend of Mondavi’s finest wines. In 1980, the joint venture was officially announced to the world, and the name “Opus One” was born.
Opus One quickly established itself as the first American ultra-premium wine. This was evident during a Napa Valley auction, where a case of Opus One fetched an impressive $24,000—at the time, the highest price ever paid for a Californian wine.
In 1991, Opus One's own winery was built, surrounded by 69 hectares of vineyards where varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec are cultivated. Every year, Opus One attracts around 60,000 visitors, who can visit the winery by appointment only.
Opus One is now recognized as one of the most iconic wines in the world. The collaboration between Mondavi and Rothschild has produced a wine that embodies both the elegance of Bordeaux and the rich flavors of Napa Valley. Opus One remains a benchmark for ultra-premium wines and is a must for any serious wine collector.
