Description
Skycrest Vineyard is the highest site in Anderson Valley, at nearly 2,000 feet above sea level in the hills northeast of Boonville. The blocks for Maggy Hawk's Skycrest Chardonnay are located at the very top of the steep slopes. The cooler temperatures and stressful growing conditions allow the grapes to ripen slowly, giving them greater depth and character.
The Chardonnay was harvested at night to keep the fruit cold when it arrived at the winery. After pressing, the Chardonnay was sent to ferment in barrels, with a small portion going to stainless steel. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally, allowing the wine to develop slowly and steadily. The wine then aged for 16 months in a mix of French and Austrian oak barrels before bottling.
Winemmakers Notes: "Focused, fresh and bright. The 2018 Skycrest Vineyard Chardonnay offers a complex mix of citrus, tropical and stone fruit that can only be achieved from this elevation. The unique blend of white peach, papaya, lemon tart and floral aromas blend seamlessly into a light and fresh palate of Cara Cara Orange, almond and hints of ground ginger. The acidity is lazer focused throughout the wine and highlights the incredible texture and delightfully long finish."

The 2019 Chardonnay Skycrest Vineyard comes from vines planted at 1,500 to 2,000 feet in elevation above the town of Boonville in the Anderson Valley. It was mostly barrel fermented and matured for 16 months in 30% new French oak. It has elegant aromas of yellow apples, quince, beeswax, hay and salted almonds. The medium-bodied palate is silky and fresh with savory fruits and flinty streaks, finishing long and gently honeyed. 515 cases produced.

The 2018 Chardonnay Sky Crest is supple and wonderfully nuanced. Apricot, lemon confit, white flowers and light tropical notes all run through this pliant, creamy Chardonnay. Drink it over the next handful of years.

These are some of the most consistent wines I have tasted from Maggy Hawk. Most of the wines are from estate vineyards in Anderson Valley, where Jackson Family Wines has a strong imprint. In speaking of her 2017s, winemaker Sarah Wuethrich recounts a harvest season that saw the winery lose power for three days and water for an entire week, both significant challenges. The 2017s spent 15 months in barrel, with no racking and were bottled unfined and unfiltered. More importantly, the Maggy Hawk Pinots are more differentiated than they have been in the past.

This wine is a beauty, balancing a band of subtle flavors with a polished texture and vibrant acidity that give it a lively presence on the palate and a lingering finish. Mild baking spices and toast in the aroma give way to baked apple and cream flavors that are delicious to linger over.
90 - Jen Dunnuck
Coming from the Anderson Valley, the 2018 Chardonnay Skycrest Vineyard offers lots of pear and Meyer lemon fruits as well as hints of toast and chalky minerality. Medium-bodied, it has bright, juicy acidity and the classic savory, mineral-laced style of this appellation.

In the beautiful Anderson Valley you will find Maggy Hawk - an estate that focuses on creating wines that highlight the purity of the grape. All their wines have a profound elegance and have a sense of place.
Winemaker Sarah Wuethrich harnesses the diversity of each and every vineyard, each able to add another layer to the characteristic of the final wine. Each has its own style and story to tell. Together, they offer a unique view of the remote Anderson Valley. The plots are vinified separately as much as possible, and as little intervention as possible is made in the cellars in order to highlight the unique character of each plot as much as possible. Sarah grew up in California and was inspired by her father, a 'hobby winemaker', to pursue winemaking training. While working at various wineries in California, her interest in 'cool climate' wines grew.
The nearby ocean provides coolness to the valley, regularly filling the valley with a thick layer of fog. Nature plays the leading role here: small vineyards are surrounded by large coastal redwoods and large boulders. The vineyard sites are often steep, with low fertility, poor soils. But it is precisely these extreme conditions in which the grapes feel at home. The cool climate and poor soil provide grapes with a nice balance between ripeness, aromas and freshness. Wines from this area are pure and have a beautiful elegance.
