Description
This wine is named in honor of the Pago de Valderramiro, a piece of clay soil planted in 1924 with 4 generations of winemaking tradition dedicated to preserving the essence and personality of a vineyard that represents the history of Emilio Moro. The clay soils allow one to obtain the purest character of our Tinto Fino wine and all its power, structure and great intensity, allowing the "terroir" to receive all the attention. The 2019 vegetative cycle was preceded by the April rains. However, from mid-spring to the end of summer, the year was characterized by scanty rainfall and higher than expected temperatures. The harvest began after a few rainy days, which helped to balance the composition of the grapes and resulted in a year of exceptional quality and optimal health.
In the Valderramiro there are 4 hectares of the oldest vines of this winery — planted in 1924, so almost 100 years old — that were used exclusively for this cuvée. In addition, the wine fermented in (new) American oak and was aged for another 18 months in (new) French 'barricas'. The result is a wine that can age for a long time. Brilliant cherry red, lots of ripe fruit on the nose (black cherry), mocha and a hint of fumé oak. Ripe, concentrated and velvety in taste, with chocolate, blueberry and minerals. This favorite wine of the King of Spain is frequently served at festive dinners of the royal family.

There is a volatile whiff in the 2016 Malleolus de Valderramiro, which is always headier and feels riper than the Sancho Martín. It has abundant, powdery tannins, good ripeness without excess and a dry, long finish. There's something intriguing on the nose here that I could not identify, sweet spices for sure but something perfumed too. 7,000 bottles were filled in August 2019 after 18 months in barrel.
I tasted the wines from Ribera del Duero and also the Godello whites from Bierzo from Emilio Moro.

This is complex, big and beautiful with a generous splash of sweet spices and dark chocolate to the rich but fresh blackberries and savory, cured meat. A hint of mineral, too. Full-bodied on the palate, tightly sealed by powdery tannins. Powerful, but still juicy and really long. Better from 2025.

The family business Emilio Moro has been located in Pesquera del Duero since 1892. This bodega boasts a three-generation tradition and includes vineyards over 90 years old. Due to their long history, they have been able to expand their vineyards very specifically with mostly Tinto Fino. The Finca Resalso and Crianza excel in purity, elegance and complexity. The top cuvées are of rare class; the very old vines of these two 'Pagos' give an extremely low yield resulting in very complex wines with a great depth and temperament.
In 1987 Emilio Moro first launched his own wines under his own label. With about 200 hectares of vineyards and a total annual production of 1.5 million bottles, it is a modern and large company. Thanks to its high quality standards and innovative management, it is also one of the leading wine companies. This applies not only in Spain but money worldwide and this is also confirmed that it has been nominated by Wine Enthusiast as Best Winery of the World. Emilio Moro's focus on Research, Development and Innovation is impressive and the enormous focus on quality is certainly an important factor in the high quality of all wines, but let's not forget that the old Emilio Moro vineyards are located in the most beautiful part of the Ribera del Duero with a completely unique and extremely suitable terroir located at a great height. In 2017, Wine Spectator placed the Emilio Moro in 59th place in the Prestigious Top 100 of the world's best wines.
In 2008, Emilio Moro died at the age of 75. In the same year, the Emilio Moro foundation was established, which is committed to providing poor regions of the world with clean drinking water and improving living conditions. Javier & José Moro are now in charge.
The emilio moro portfolio consists of 5 red wines, all of which are made from the regional variant of the Tempranillo (tinto fino). The special thing is that a very old pure clone is used. The vineyards range from 30-90 years old, but even the younger vineyards are from the lots of this unique clone. Emilio moro does not use the terms Crianza or Reserva and the name of the wine stands for the character of the wine.
