Description
Located in Meursault. A beautiful family domain where generations have succeeded each other since the 17th century. Today, Charles Ballot is at the helm. The still young Charles Ballot took over the domaine in 2000 from his father Philippe. His estate consists of about 30 hectares. Mainly Chardonnay from the best terroirs from Meursault and Chassagne Montrachtet, but also Pinot Noir from Pommard, Volnay and Chassagne. Charles Ballot is now one of the absolute top in his region. Tradition and innovation are the keywords here. Charles respects 'terroir', prunes for lower yields and cherishes his old canes. He also invests in modern techniques and materials to ensure the very best quality. It works according to traditional culture such as full fermentation on wood and low yields. In the wine cellar he opts for a soft, slow pressing and a slow vinification. All his wines are fully fermented and aged in oak for 12 months. For the most part he uses old barrels of 1 or 2 years. The road to full organic cultivation has now been started.
The 1er Cru Pézerolles is located on a terrain of calcareous loam and clay-calcareous residues. In the glass it shows a bright ruby red color. On the nose it shows great aromatic purity, with floral aromas that alternate with aromas reminiscent of small red and black berries. In the mouth it is perfectly balanced, fine and elegant, with a great feeling of softness despite its excellent structure. Excellent with dishes based on red meat or game. Perfect also with different types of aged cheeses.

The 2017 Pommard 1er Cru Pézerolles is also showing well, displaying scents of raspberries, plums, spices, peonies and raw cocoa. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and nicely concentrated, with lively acids, suave tannins and a sapid core of fruit.
This was my first visit to Domaine Ballot-Millot, where Charles Ballot is producing serious wines, old-fashioned in the best sense, that deserve to be better known. Ballot told me that he generally presses whole bunches without crushing, his press cycle lasting three-and-a-half hours with some 15 rotations. Débourbage is brief to non-existent, and the wines go to barrel without addition of yeasts, enzymes or anything else. After 12 months in wood (from Tonnelleries Damy and Billon), they are fined in the event of any protein instability and remain in tank to digest any dissolved oxygen before bottling in January or February. The result is textural, structured wines with lovely cut and concentration that often display a gently reductive personality. Everything I tasted comes recommended.
