Description
The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru from Domaine Bachelet-Monnot is an exceptional white wine from Burgundy, France, made from 100% Chardonnay grapes. The vineyard is located on the border of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, with vines planted in 1950 on limestone soils. The grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed for up to three hours. The must is clarified for 12 to 24 hours before fermentation takes place in one-year-old 350-liter oak barrels, with no new oak used.
The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru offers aromas of pear, orange, warm bread, white flowers and praline. Full-bodied, textural and muscular, rich and powerful, with a deep and meaty core, juicy acidity and a long, resonant finish. This broad-shouldered, gourmet Bâtard will be at its best with a little bottle ageing.
Neal Martin from Vinous ends his review with (95-97) with " .....So give this 5-6 years in bottle because there's a killer wine waiting for you "

The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru offers up aromas of pear, orange oil, warm bread, white flowers and praline. Full-bodied, textural and muscular, it's rich and powerful, with a deep and fleshy core, succulent acids and a long, resonant finish. This broad-shouldered, gastronomic Bâtard will be at its best with a bit of bottle age.
Though quantities are down due to frost, the 2019 vintage has turned out brilliantly at Maranges reference-point Domaine Bachelet-Monnot, where brothers Mark and Alexandre preside over a superb portfolio of serious, structured whites and demonstrative, pleasure-bent reds. Farming organically but without certification, the style here continues to evolve: since 2016, grapes have been crushed before pressing, and the brothers now retain more lees. As has been the case for some time now, white wines ferment and mature in 350-liter barrels. Red wine vinifications are gentle and are followed by maturation in modest percentages of new wood. Everything reviewed here comes warmly recommended.

From: La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy - Côte de Beaune (Dec 2020)
The 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru for the second year running has no new oak. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with citrus peel, Clementine, lemon verbena and light limestone aromas. This is wonderfully focused and intense. The palate is well balanced with a saline entry, taut and crisp with a flinty opening, then slams down the shutters towards the finish as if to say, how rude it is to be assessed at this stage (fair enough). So give this 5-6 years in bottle because there's a killer wine waiting for you.

Heading down to the village of Dezize-lès-Maranges always leaves me feeling happy because it means I am en route to meet Alexandre and Marc Bachelet and tasting their impressive whites and reds. Marc Bachelet escorted me through the 2019s and a number of 2018s. “We started picking on 6 September and finished on 20 September,” he told me. “Yields were around 42hl/ha for the reds and 30hl/ha for the whites, occasionally half the crop. The yields in Puligny-Montrachet were better. The low yields came because of the flowering and also since 2013 being organic. I guess it is the combination of different things over recent vintages. The whole bunches component on the red wines is selected from millerandé berries on the sorting table. We used around 25% for the 2018 red Premier Crus.” What can I say apart from every year these boys slam-dunk another raft of outstanding wines that brim with freshness and vigour. They have the knack. Their 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet is as good as any you will come across, but really what I love is how they elevate Maranges into something that exceeds all expectations, as demonstrated by a 2017 Maranges La Fussière I ordered from a restaurant list the following week.

The Bachelet family is well known in the Côte d'Or, they own plots on some of the most famous vineyards in Burgundy. Despite this, the family had some disagreements about the state of affairs on the domain. The youngest generation, the brothers Marc and Alex, did not panic and meanwhile studied viticulture at the university and did internships elsewhere in France and America. When they returned to Burgundy, their grandfather decided not to give parts of his land to his own sons, but to his two grandsons. From day one, both boys devoted themselves to their new activities with great dedication.
2005 was the first harvest year that Marc and Alex Bachelet worked independently. The gentlemen have in common that they are both huge perfectionists and also very eager to learn. They continuously try to improve and perfect things on the domain and with every visit things have changed again, from the size of the barrels, the duration of the education, to the temperature of the cellar. Besides the great wines they make in the prestigious villages of Puligny and Chassagne, Marc and Alexandre Bachelet also make exemplary wines in Maranges and Santenay.
