Description
The Château Pape Clement Rouge Grand Cru Classé de Graves has put a very fine wine on the map with its 2019 vintage and is now approaching the Premier Crus in terms of level (fortunately not yet in terms of price, but this will certainly happen). This flagship of the empire of Mr. Bernard Magrez is destemming completely manually, berry by berry, and only the berries with an intact skin are used in the wine. A gigantic cost in personnel (more than 20 people for destemming), but with an extraordinary result.
The Pape Clement Rouge is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon & 50% Merlot and has matured for 18 months in oak barriques of which 60% is new and the rest 2nd year oak. In the glass the Pape Clement has a deep garnet red color with a purple hue. The 2018 Pape Clement needs some oxygen but then slowly unfolds with notes of fragrant earth, crushed rocks, iron ore and tobacco which then turns into red and black berries, cherry, roses and black tea. Full and wonderfully lively it is medium to full bodied with firm and fine-grained tannins and an astonishing freshness, very long (mineral) finish.
With its smoky and spicy bouquet, the red Pape cCement is of admirable quality and a very characteristic softness. The wine is both concentrated, fine and harmonious, with an aromatic palette that is as broad as it is precise. The depth and length in the mouth are exceptional. The quality of the terroir, sustained efforts and dynamism have paid off, bringing Pape Clément to a level very close to that of the premiers crus. The recent assessment of the international wine press also confirms this
This is a 1.5 liter magnum.

Composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, the 2019 Pape Clement was harvested from the 18th of September to the 11th of October. Ninety-three percent is aging in French oak barriques, 66% new, and 7% is aging in large foudres. Deep garnet-purple in color, it hits the ground running with bold, expressive notes of warm cassis, boysenberries and black cherries with an undercurrent of clove oil, fertile loam, cedar chest and tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers a rock-solid foundation of firm, ripe grainy tannins and tons of freshness supporting the densely packed black fruit and earthy layers, finishing very long and mineral laced.

This is really well put together, with waves of steeped plum, currant and raspberry fruit, bolts of licorice and tar and a long apple wood accent on the sappy finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Score range: 95 - 98 — JM

From: Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Pape-Clément was a real show-stopper from barrel. Now in bottle since summer 2021, it has a more refined nose that I feel is perhaps just a little closed in as it approaches its first winter. Aeration reveals some lovely rose petal and incense aromas (there’s something almost Burgundian, Morey-Saint-Denis–like about its purity). The palate is extremely well balanced with velvety tannins and perfectly judged acidity. The oak (65% new, in the form of 400-liter barrels that have been employed since 2018) are beautifully integrated. This fans out wonderfully on the finish. One of the finest releases from Pape-Clément in recent years.

The 2019 Pape Clément is just as impressive as it was en primeur. It shows all of the textural richness that is so typical of Bernard Magrez's wines, but with an extra kick of freshness that provides energy as well as a sense of proportion. A wine of stature, the 2019 is so classy. Succulent black cherry, plum, mocha, new leather and licorice are all beautifully delineated. But more than anything else, I find the wine's energy really impressive. This is a fabulous vintage for Pape Clément. Tasted two times.

The 2019 Pape Clément is a fabulous wine. Rich, exotic and sweet in its grandeur, the 2019 captivates all the senses with its dazzling beauty. The 2019 is a wine of statuesque proportions that impresses with its intensity. Dark fruit, spice, pear, tobacco and gravel all explode out of the glass. There is so much to look forward to here. What a wine. Tasted three times.

From: Uncertain Smile: Bordeaux 2019 (Jun 2020)
The 2019 Pape-Clément was picked from 17 September to 10 October, underwent a 30 day maceration. Matured in 90% oak barrels and 10% wooden foudres for 18 months. It has a very perfumed bouquet with luscious black cherries and boysenberry fruit, touches of raspberry preserve and crème de cassis. The palate is full-bodied and quite muscular, exerting a firm grip and displaying plenty of tobacco-tinged black fruit that dovetails into a more saline, marine influenced finish. This is a very serious Pape-Clément that will require longer ageing than its peers, but will surely be rewarding for those with patience. Tasted on five occasions - hopefully there is some wine left back at the château.
