2019 Château Montrose La Dame de Montrose Saint-Estèphe Magnum

Made to the same exacting standards as the First Wine, from grapes grown in the same vineyard, La Dame de Montrose is the estate’s second label. Supple and silky Merlot generally dominates the varietal mix. The very pronounced red fruit aromas and flavours reflect another expression of the terroir in a distinctive style. Consistently reliable and quicker to mature, the wine was created in 1983 as a tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, who ran Château Montrose single-handedly from 1944 to 1960. Production varies from year to year but accounts for an average of 40-45% of the total production from the Montrose vineyard. Aged for 12 months in 30% new French oak barrels.

The 2019 La Dame de Montrose is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and 50+% Merlot supplemented with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. La Dame is the 2nd wine of Chateau Montrose and this one has a perfumed, floral and pure bouquet with black cherries, blueberries and violets. On the palate the wine is well balanced with a more opulent texture compared to its fellow Saint Estèphes thanks to the opulent Merlot that forms the core of this wine. It has commendable energy and is already very approachable and does not need decades in the cellar to come into its own.
