Description
Château Lagrange is one of the most prominent Grand Cru Classé wineries from Saint-Julien. Located entirely within the Saint-Julien appellation, the vineyard extends in a single block over two north-south rises of Gunzian gravel soil. In parts large and coarse and in others finer, this gravel is combined with sand or iron-rich clay, depending on the plot. With a height of 24 meters, the center of the domain marks the highest point of Saint-Julien. The estate covers 182 hectares (450 acres), of which 118 hectares (292 acres) are under vines. Most plots have a drainage system.
2019, like 2018, will be remembered for its very contrasting weather. There was a cold, wet spring and then a dry, hot summer with record-breaking sunshine! This was the longest harvest that Lagrange had ever seen. The berry weight at Lagrange was the lowest in the past 36 years. They took a gamble by stopping for a while between Merlot and Cabernet, judging that the latter's phenolic maturity was not commensurate with its technological maturity. It was important not to rush and taste the grapes daily as the skins gradually thinned and the aromas were gradually revealed. They harvested the richest grapes in the estate's modern history in 2019.
The character of Lagrange, its unique terroir and the expertise of the technical team have ensured that this vintage has surpassed itself. It features both phenolic richness and freshness in the fruit. This is a powerful, creamy, smooth wine. With a record of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Lagrange 2019 blend will go down in history. The full blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 2% Petit-Verdot. The expressive, aromatic nose opens with black cherry, black currant and licorice. On the palate the entry is silky soft and full of powerful, velvety tannins. This distinguished and elegant 2019 will take its place among Lagrange's iconic vintages. The aging potential is simply remarkable!

The 2019 Lagrange has turned out beautifully in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, blackberries and cassis mingled with hints of loamy soil, pencil shavings and bay leaf. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with an ample core of lively fruit, powdery tannins and succulent acids, it's suave and seamless, concluding with a long, expansive finish. The result of an extremely rigorous selection, and incorporating fully 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is the finest wine this château has produced in the modern era. Remarkably, it was released at the same price en primeur as the 2005!
When Matthieu Bordes arrived at Château Lagrange in 2006, he had the good fortune to take over a vineyard that had been extensively replanted in the 1980s and was just arriving at maturity. Since Suntory acquired this estate, indeed, no expense has been spared, nor has any selection been considered too severe; and as the fruits of that investment over the years met Bordes' talents, the results have been exceptional. The 2019 Lagrange, the finest wine produced here in the modern era, shows just what this estate is capable of, and it is worth a special effort to seek out.

Aromas of blackcurrants, sandalwood and rose petals. Medium-to full-bodied with linear tannins that are racy and refined, yet forceful. Fine tannins at the end. Best after 2024.

The Japanese group, Suntory, acquired the domain in 1983. Marcel Ducasse was then recruited together with Kenji Suzuta to carry out the complete restructuring of the vineyard and a spectacular renovation of the entire estate. This first step was to mark the rebirth of Chateau Lagrange. After twenty years of dedicated work, as well as human and technical investments, Lagrange is once again one of the top Grand Cru Classé , focusing over the last twenty years on the production of refined, elegant and expressive wines, in the best Saint-Julien style but also with production methods that substantially reduce the ecological impact.
