Description
The Carruades de Lafite is the second wine of Château Lafite Rothschild and has similar characteristics to the Grand Vin, but with its own personality linked to a higher proportion of Merlot and to specific plots used to produce Carruades. The name comes from the Carruades Plateau, a group of plots acquired in 1845 just adjacent to the vines on the Château's hilltop.
The 2019 Carruades de Lafite is a blend of Cabernet sauvignon 68%, Merlot 27%, Cabernet franc 5%. In the glass, the wine has an attractive color, dark and deep. The nose is characteristic of this vintage - namely ripe and fresh at the same time, with notes of blackcurrant and black fruit. The attack is simple in the mouth but then the wine unfolds to express all its volume. The tannins are fine and precise. The high percentage of Cabernet, both Cabernet Sauvignon (68%) and Cabernet Franc (5%), provides a lot of tension in the finish. It is a rich Carruades with very good aging potential and will release its full potential with around 6 to 8 years.
This is a 1.5 liter magnum
ABOUT VINTAGE 2019
The 2019 vintage got off to a good start with a mild and dry winter. The good weather continued until the beginning of spring, leading to an early start to the growth cycle. In April and May, the unusually cold and especially dry weather slowed down growth and the lead was quickly lost. On May 28, the first flowers appeared in our Pauillac vineyards. At this key stage of the cycle, the weather was rather erratic, with rainy spells in the second part of flowering leading to poor fruit set and uneven ripening.
June changed course after a rainy and cool start, with the onset of an early summer heatwave the likes of which had not been seen since 2003. Fortunately, it was short-lived and the vines quickly caught up and seemed better equipped than in previous years to withstand this heat. On 26 July, rain miraculously fell: 45mm fell in Pauillac, perfect for inducing véraison. Temperatures in August then remained very moderate, without peaks but with a few scattered showers and the drier weather at the end of the month, which continued until mid-September, allowed the harvest to begin in calm conditions. The cool, warm and perfect conditions during the harvest ensure that the 2019 vintage is one of the best years in Bordeaux (with a relatively low yield, but that is good for quality)

2019 Bordeaux Primeurs Flash Review 2, The Wine Advocate
The 2019 Carruades de Lafite is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, harvested from the 19th of September to the 7th of October. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it comes skipping out of the glass with bright, fresh notions of wild blueberries, ripe plums and redcurrant jelly plus hints of cinnamon stick, cumin seed, oolong tea and violets with a waft of black olives. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers loads of rich, ripe, spicy flavors with a soft texture of nicely rounded tannins and with the freshness in the background, finishing on a lingering allspice note. In a word: Yum!
The Merlot in the 2019 grand vin is a “new wine” of Merlot for Lafite, according to technical director Eric Kohler. “Before, we only had three tanks of Merlot to choose from,” he explained. “Often, it was the same choice. Now, we have identified three plots of Merlot to co-vinify. The amounts were too little to be vinified separately, so they used to go into the blends. This makes a new Merlot lot for us. This year, this Merlot blend was just perfect for the grand vin. This addition of the new Merlot helped keep the balance.”
Regarding the 2019 vintage of Lafite’s very popular second wine: “This is the first time we used this much Cabernet Sauvignon in the Carruades blend,” Kohler told me. Usually it is more like 55% Cabernet with more Merlot. It is even more like Lafite this year!”

The vineyard of Château Lafite Rothschild consists of three main areas: The slopes around the Château, the Carruades plateau to the west and a 4.5 hectare site in Saint-Estèphe. Its area is 112 hectares. The soil consists of fine, deeply ground mixed with windblown sand on a well-drained and well-incorporated tertiary limestone subsoil. The grape varieties grown here are Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Here the first stones were laid, the winegrowers' houses were built and prepared for something unusual to happen. As the years passed, the house overlooking this hill got bigger and a wisteria vine climbed the walls of generations of families to see how preserving this ecosystem has always been the ultimate priority. 150 years ago, Baroness Betty, wife of Baron James, planted the huge oak trees that separate our vineyard from the marshes. They, their children and grandchildren, the families of winegrowers die with them, work conscientiously to protect this impeccable creation that has been bequeathed to nature. They have taken great care to preserve this microcosm of forests and marshes, flora and fauna amidst the vines of Château Lafite Rothschild thrive in this almost wild osmosis.
As the ultimate witness to this protected land, some of the vines still gracefully show off their 140 years of ungrafted life. They escaped the phylloxera which, however, spared no one else! This infallible part of the vines continues to elude the winegrowers, the same ones who form, protect and nurture it, from one harvest year to the next, trying to refine this perfect composition that amazes them time and time again. It may not be a coincidence, of course, that Lafite earned the title of "First of the First" at Napoleon III's World's Fair. Nor will it be a coincidence, if others will speak of it long after us… Each barrel is tasted individually and only the best is selected for the final blend. After blending, the wine matures for 15 months in new oak barrels. Fermentation takes place for 15 days at a controlled temperature of 18°C. Only vines older than 10 years are used for the Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild. While each vintage is unique, there is usually a large portion of Cabernet Sauvignon, then Merlot, with a small contribution of Petit Verdot.
